How to protect yourself against tax refund fraud
1. Best Practices
Secure all personal documents in your
home using a locked file cabinet or a
safe deposit box at the bank.
Don’t transmit SSNs, account #s or
birthdates unless the website is secure or
encrypted.
Don’t open links or attachments in
suspicious or unsolicited emails.
Electronically
Shred documents containing personal
information before discarding.
In the Home
Review your credit report from each of the three major credit
bureaus at least annually - they are required by law to provide this.
If you must mail personal information, make sure to deposit
directly at the post office or post office collection box.
Protect your personal computer through
the use of firewalls/anti-virus software, etc.
Password protect your smartphone.
Arrange for masked Social Security numbers whenever possible.
