Dr. Monique Wubbenhorst, Deputy Assistant Administrator, Bureau for Global Health, USAID covers the agency's mission and how they address treatment and prevention of disease, with a focus on strengthening partnerships with faith-based organizations.
2. Introduction
• For decades USAID has been a leader in supporting the health of millions
around the world.
• The Global Health Bureau under the USAID umbrella prioritizes: Preventing
child and maternal deaths; controlling the HIV/AIDS epidemic and combating
infectious disease
• One of the hallmarks of effective health care delivery is a systemic approach
to identifying, assessing and addressing the needs of high-risk, vulnerable
populations.
• While Primary Prevention is the first line of defense, of course, around the
world many are already dealing with the great challenges of disease,
malnutrition, infant mortality and the healthy timing and spacing of
pregnancy which can impact a family’s ability to address basic needs
3. The priority for public
health campaigns
1. Prevent disease
2. Prevent high-risk
health behaviors

● We realize identifying these
public health problems and
needs is only the beginning
● The next step is determining
how to address the most
pressing health-related
issues in the most timely and
effective manner.
● That’s where civil society
organizations, including faith-
based organizations, and
development agencies like
USAID/Global Health, join
forces in partnership to fight
these enormous battles, and
win.
How can we address these public health problems?
7. There has been no greater ally in this
fight than faith-based organizations
• You are trusted, respected members
of your communities who know how to
work within existing health systems,
however basic, and expand their
effectiveness
• 40-70% of health care delivery,
especially in sub-Saharan Africa, is
done by organizations such as yours

8. The value of USAID-FBO
partnerships
• Therefore, supporting and reinforcing
your efforts is key to addressing
issues that impact all aspects of the
lives of people in vulnerable
communities worldwide, including:
– Economic stability, safety and
security
– Health of individuals, families and
communities
– Opportunities for each individual
to use their abilities to achieve
their God-given potential.
