Presented at http://mcbios-maqc.org. The FAIR Principles have propelled the global debate in all disciplines about better RDM, transparent and reproducible data worldwide, and in all disciplines. FAIR has de facto become a global norm for good RDM, a prerequisite for data science, since their endorsement by global and intergovernmental leaders. Funding bodies are consolidating FAIR into their funding agreements; publishers have united behind FAIR as a way to remain at the forefront of open research; and in the private sector FAIR is adopted and enshrined in policy in major biopharmas, libraries, and unions. FAIR is changing the culture of data science, but work is needed to turn the principles into reality. I will use the work of the FAIRplus project as examplar to illustrate challenges and progresses.

Slides supporting presentation given at the virtual Beilstein Open Science Symposium in October 2021. Abstract: Health Data Research UK’s mission is to unite the UK’s health data to enable discoveries that improve people’s lives. Our 20-year vision is for large scale data and advanced analytics to benefit every patient interaction, clinical trial, biomedical discovery and enhance public health. A key part of HDR UK’s vision is our data portal, the Innovation Gateway. The Gateway facilitates discovery of healthcare data and simplifies data request procedures across multiple data custodians. The Gateway contains metadata on a variety of datasets, including those related to COVID-19, cardiovascular, maternal health, emergency care, primary care, secondary care, acute care, palliative care, biobanks, research cohorts and deeply phenotyped patient cohorts. From the outset HDR UK has sought the voices, views and experiences of patient and lay-public groups to ensure there is transparency and clear public benefit in the use of the UK’s health data. Patient and public involvement is key to making the Gateway accessible, transparent and to ensure public confidence in research access to health data. The importance of public outreach combined with providing research access to data is illustrated with HDR UK’s contribution to the UK’s coronavirus pandemic response. HDR UK was tasked by the UK’s Chief Scientific Office to build and facilitate the infrastructure to support the National Core Studies, providing key insights on the evolving situation to UK policy makers during the course of the pandemic. In this talk, I will show how HDR UK is enabling open science by facilitating the discovery of health data, and simplifying the process of requesting access to multiple datasets. I’ll discuss HDR UK’s approach to embedding transparency on research data usage for patients and public, and summarise some of the key ways in which HDR UK has contributed to the coronavirus pandemic.

Presenters: Jeffrey M. Mortimore, Georgia Southern University Debra G. Skinner, Georgia Southern University Institutional Repositories require continuous promotion and support to attract and retain campus collections. However, balancing promotion with a clear representation of repository offerings, policies, and procedures is challenging, especially for institutions that rely on public services personnel for front-line promotion. This poster presents Georgia Southern University's recently-developed IR Services LibGuide as a model for providing such a framework (http://georgiasouthern.libguides.com/irservices/). This portal provides 1) a front-line promotional tool; 2) a client-management tool for support consultations; and 3) a storehouse for repository-related forms and licenses. It further integrates with the library's other scholarly communications-related guides, providing seamless representation of these services to patrons.

Bridging the gap: providing a marketing and support framework for IR Services

The role of FAIRsharing in assessing FAIRness of digital objects: we assist, not assess. The workshop brought together a number of FAIR evaluation tools to discuss and design common FAIR tests to ensure tools deliver consistet results. Our presentation illustrates how FAIRsharing's content helps and how FAIRsharing's service contributes. The work will contribute to the work of the EOSC FAIR Metrics Task Force.

Intellectual property (IP) refers to creations of the mind, such as inventions; literary and artistic works; designs; and symbols, names and images used in commerce. IP is protected in law by, for example, patents, copyright and trademarks, which enable people to earn recognition or financial benefit from what they invent or create. By striking the right balance between the interests of innovators and the wider public interest, the IP system aims to foster an environment in which creativity and innovation can flourish. Let us try and understand the basics of these intellectual property rights, how they can be applied for in India and understand how and why they are litigated so fiercely.

In recent years governments and research institutions have emphasized the need for open data as a fundamental component of open science. But we need much more than the data themselves for them to be reusable and useful. We need descriptive and machine-readable metadata, of course, but we also need the software and the algorithms necessary to fully understand the data. We need the standards and protocols that allow us to easily read and analyze the data with the tools of our choice. We need to be able to trust the source and derivation of the data. In short, we need an interoperable data infrastructure, but it must be a flexible infrastructure able to work across myriad cultures, scales, and technologies. This talk will present a concept of infrastructure as a body of human, organisational, and machine relationships built around data. It will illustrate how a new organization, the Research Data Alliance, is working to build those relationships to enable functional data sharing and reuse.
