CIGS event: Resource Discovery: from catalogues to discovery services, 21 March 2018
Where did you come from, where
will you go? Bibliographic data
and union catalogues.

2. A new, bigger union catalogue
The National Bibliographic Knowledgebase (NBK) will
aggregate bibliographic data at scale and link with a
number of other data sources to inform library collection
management decisions and to help users more effectively
find, access and use print and digital scholarly resources.
We aim to include data from over 200 UK HE, research,
and specialist libraries, and are accepting data now and
into 2019, with the services going live in 2019.

3. Uses of a union catalogue
Resource discovery
Open access
Inter-library loan
Cataloguing
Collection
management/development

5. How do we make a union catalogue?
»Source the records
› A physical union catalogue
»Tidy them up
› bye bye UKMARC
»Deduplicate/consolidate
»Interfaces
› Resource discovery
› Collection management
› Cataloguing
27/03/2018 5
6. Deduplicating records
One is chosen as the base
record, and content added
from other matched records.
Original records are retained,
indexed, and viewable.
»What do we match on?
› Important for collection
management
› Not static – we refine and
improve
27/03/2018 6

copac-matching-diverse-data/
12. In-house vs union catalogues
»What works in-house might not work for a union
catalogue
› Are you making local accommodations?
»Standards vs what actually works in practice
27/03/2018 12
13. Metadata for: resource discovery
Known item searching
»Author variants
»Title variants
»Transliterations
Unknown item searching
»Subjects
»Classifications
»Abstracts
»Tables of contents
27/03/2018 13
“Usual” bibliographic data, plus
Plus holdings information
14. Metadata for: open access discovery
Resource discovery, plus:
»Is it OA?
› Source
› OA ‘flag’?
»Does the metadata match sufficiently with non-OA
versions for it to consolidate?
27/03/2018 14
15. Metadata for: inter-library loan
Resource discovery, plus
»Holdings information
»ILL codes
»Loan status
»Loan category
»Conservation status
27/03/2018 15
16. Metadata for: cataloguing
»RDA?
»Correct indicators
»Correct punctuation
»Which classification scheme?
»Any ‘added value’ data?
» Any local data?
»Record source? Can I reuse it?
27/03/2018 16
17. Metadata for: collection management/development
»Holdings
information
»Conservation status
»Retention status
»Item status
› missing?
»Format
27/03/2018 17
18. Metadata for: the ‘national collection’
As for collection
management/development,
plus
»Things to be decided – by
the community
»There are gaps and our
picture is incomplete
27/03/2018 18
19. Metadata for: research on the dataset
All the above, but
especially (eg)
»Publisher
»Place of publication
»Year of publication
»Series
27/03/2018 19
20. So what actually is high-quality metadata?
»It depends…
› On the use
› On the source
› On the library
› On the context
27/03/2018 20
21. Can we make it better?
Community data
groups
»Looking at:
› Standards
› Systems and
suppliers
› Tools
› Toolkit
