Love Our Library : Energy Metering levels increased from 52% to 97% of electrical consumers Changes to air flow rates and time schedules to suit occupancy patterns First time hitting under 100,000 kWh for 1 month Air handling improvements have delivered substantial savings Extended opening hours during this period without incurring any extra lighting costs Since 2016 saved approx. 1,381,000 kWh

- 10. Love Our Library: Energy Covid โข Increase in electrical consumption during COVID driven by: โข Increase ventilation load. Previously ventilation was supplied to maintain an environment below 850 ppm CO2 but in a COVID operating environment we need to supply full fresh air. โข Ventilation now runs longer - 2 hours before opening and after closing. โข Christmas opening hours extended. โข Note that the ventilation load as an electrical demand of 250 kW.

Love Our Library: Water โข Water fountains in the library have been upgraded โข Students are encouraged to refill their water bottles โข Clear directional signage to the fountains has been put in place. โข Posters at the fountains provide information on the problems caused by plastic bottle usage and the general health benefits of drinking water. โข Water bottles made from sugar cane are sold at the Library Services desk
- 12. Love Our Library: Water Pre-Covid annual water use reduced by 2,575,000 liters of water - 18% reduction: โข Installation of sub metering. โข Reduction in water pressure / tap flowrates โข Leak detection alerts. โข Sensor controls on Urinal flush.

Love Our Library: Recycling & Waste โข The team has worked with KSG the universityโs catering contractors to create Green Conferencing in the library. โข A dishwasher has been installed and events no longer use paper cups and plates โข This has led to a saving of up to 1,000 paper cups & plates per month.

- 19. Love Our Library: Communications Keeping the message fresh and engaging has been very important for the campaign. Early in the campaign the team came in at 7am to work alongside the Students Union & cleaning staff to highlight the amount of waste which was being accumulated each day by students
- 20. Love Our Library: Communications In early April 2019 we asked our students if they were aware of the sustainability campaign and how they felt about it. Using an interactive Jamboard, students filled in a grid in response to a number of questions.
- 21. Love Our Library: Communications In August 2019 we surveyed staff on their opinions of the campaign and looked for further suggestions. There were 41 responses out of 88 recipients (46%) โVery successful initiative. Impressed that it continues and evolves rather than being limited to a once-off blitz. Good to see savings being channelled into scheme, e.g. electric library vanโ
- 22. Love Our Library: Savings 1,381,000 kWh avoided !! โขEnough energy to travel 6,617,000 kM in an Ecar or โขPower my home for 300 years.

Love Our Library: Savings In 2017 money saved was reinvested in an air curtain at the entrance to the Library In 2018 money saved was used to install a Living Wall in the Libraryโs 24-hour reading room. Over โฌ85,000 in energy savings have been reinvested over the past 5 years In 2019 money saved was used to buy an electric van for the library.
- 24. Love Our Library: Savings In 2020 money saved was used to further upgrade the water fountains. New plants were added to the ground floor of the library. 2 electric bikes were purchased for use by library staff

Love Our Library : Awards โข Green Team won the โBest Public Sectorโ category in the Cork Environmental Forum Annual Awards Ceremony in December 2017. โข The Green Team received the Best Library Team award at the Irish Education Awards Dublin in April 2018. โข Shortlisted for the Packman Awards 2019 โ Innovation Waste Management โข Shortlisted for the Sustainability Team of the Year at the Irish Green Awards 2019 โข Runners up in 2019 IFLA Green Library of the year โข Library Map of the world

- In 2016 we were contacted by UCC's energy &Utilities manager. He had a proposal โ saver saves scheme.ย Promised a weekly update from B&E on how we are doing- which was delivered and continues. Promised to work with us all the way to make this work.ย
- The team worked very closely with B&E looking at all areas of the library building and how the building was operating for each space in the library. Comfort for both staff & students and how changes could be made without compromising but actually improving conditions.ย ย
- Over time the team looked at and continues to look at all these areas.
- B&E did a huge amount of work on metering electricity. Mention air curtinย potential savings of over โฌ8,000.00 and help to eliminate long standing issues for staff working on the ground floor.
- โฌ4,000.00 was saved in turning off lights in reading room s over the summer period.
- you can see from the chart that our electrical load has been falling despite our extra opening hours until 2am every day and exteded hours at weekends
- Ventilation load of 250kW extra per hour could supply a house for up to 20 daysย
- B&E have been working on the metering the water usage in the library and have undertaken projects to reduce the usage.ย
- It quickly became evident that just looking at energy was not enough and the team decide to broaden its remit to look at all areas of library life to see how we could reduce our environmental footprint.ย What could we do to coincide with what B&E were doing Over the summer the team worked on a campaign to make changes which wouldย begin at start of the new semester A clear message to the University as to what we were doing!
- An audit of waste was done in collaboration supported byย the cleaning companyย
- ย By making it easier for people to do the right thing that is exactly what happened. No more confusion about the bins โฆ Staff training ...university's waste management contractor visited offices to speak to library staff. Cleaning company gave more training to their staff Regular information stands for studnts in library foyer Newย bins have a clipboard attached and cleaning staff record โ fill rate and contamination rate at each collectiontime.
- This wall will help eliminate toxins from the air, increase mood & productivity, reduce odours, enhance concentration and memory, and reduce stress and fatigue.

- Campaign was very much part of UCC asย agreen campus and had a big part to play. Presented to An Taisce for the 4th Green Flag.
- Traction which it gives the library in our influence on the students in relation to Sustainability.ย ย a powerful messageย across the university.ย Activley working with SUย and student environmental groups on campus.ย Threeย otherย major UCC campus sites haveย now signed up to the โSaver Savesโ scheme. This includes theย universityโs main quad, which is the base for UCCโs seniorย management team. Having watched the success of the Libraryย campaign, these sites are putting together their own teams toย drive action in their locale. Direct feedback onย the buildingย performance. In-depthย knowledge of howย the buildingย occupants use theย building and howย systems can beย improved to meetย their needs andย conserve energy. An exemplar toย showcase to otherย departments withinย UCC.
