Leveraging K-12
Advancementsto
Transform the
Fundamentalsof Learning
Know-How
he K-12 education system plays a crucial role in
Tshaping the minds and futures of young learners.
In recent years, advancements in technology and
educational practices have opened up new
opportunities to enhance the learning experience in K-
12 schools. The K-12 education system is constantly
evolving, and technology and educational practices are
playing a crucial role in shaping the future of education.
The integration of technology in education is
transforming the way students learn, teachers teach
and institutions operate, making education more
accessible, engaging and effective.
This article explores how these advancements are being
leveraged to transform the fundamentals of learning,
empowering students with the knowledge and skills they
need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. We will delve
into the various ways in which K-12 education is harnessing
advancements to cultivate essential knowledge, practical
skills and a growth mindset among students.
Tailoring Education to Individual Needs
Adaptive Learning Platforms
Technology has paved the way for adaptive learning
platforms that personalize instruction to cater to
individual student needs. These platforms utilize
algorithms and data analysis to assess students'
strengths and weaknesses, delivering targeted content
and resources. Personalized learning allows students to
progress at their own pace, ensuring a deeper
understanding of the material and addressing gaps in
knowledge.
Differentiated Instruction
Teachers are employing innovative teaching strategies
to differentiate instruction based on students’ learning
styles and abilities. This approach recognizes that
students have diverse learning preferences and
provides multiple pathways to mastery. Through
flexible grouping, varied instructional materials and
differentiated assessments, educators create a learning
environment that meets the unique needs of each
student.
Digital Literacy
Information Literacy
With the abundance of information available online, it
is essential for students to develop strong information
literacy skills. K-12 education now emphasizes the
critical evaluation of sources, distinguishing between
reliable and biased information, and understanding
ethical considerations in digital environments. Teaching
students to be discerning consumers and creators of
information equips them with essential skills for the
digital age.
Digital Citizenship
As technology becomes more integrated into our daily
lives, teaching digital citizenship has become
paramount. Educators help students understand their
rights and responsibilities in the digital world,
emphasizing concepts such as online etiquette,
cyberbullying prevention and responsible use of social

17
media. Developing good digital citizenship prepares
students to navigate the digital landscape safely,
ethically and responsibly.
Project-Based Learning
Authentic Assessments
Project-based learning provides students with
opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills in
real-world contexts. Instead of traditional exams,
students engage in hands-on projects, solving authentic
problems and demonstrating their understanding
through tangible outcomes. This approach fosters
critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration and
creativity—the essential skills needed for success in the
21st century.
Community Partnerships
Project-based learning often involves collaborations
with local organizations and community partners. By
engaging with the community, students gain a deeper
understanding of societal issues and develop empathy
and social awareness. These partnerships provide
authentic learning experiences, connecting classroom
learning to real-world challenges and fostering a sense
of civic responsibility.
STEAM Education
Interdisciplinary Approaches
STEAM education integrates various disciplines,
emphasizing the interconnectedness of subjects.
Students engage in cross-disciplinary problem-solving
and gain a holistic understanding of complex issues
through STEAM education. This approach nurtures
creativity, innovation and critical thinking skills,
preparing students for the interdisciplinary nature of
future careers.
Maker Spaces and Robotics
Schools are embracing maker spaces and robotics
programs to foster hands-on learning experiences.
These spaces provide students with tools, resources
and technology to design, create and innovate. From
coding and programming to building prototypes,
students develop essential technical skills and gain
confidence in applying their knowledge to real-world
challenges.
The K-12 education landscape is undergoing a
transformative shift, leveraging advancements to
revolutionize the fundamentals of learning. Looking
ahead, the future of K-12 education holds exciting
possibilities. One significant future development is the
expansion of online and blended learning models. With
the rise of digital platforms and connectivity, K-12
education can reach beyond the physical boundaries of
the classroom. Online and blended learning models
offer flexibility and accessibility, allowing students to
learn at their own pace and explore a wider range of
subjects and learning resources. The integration of
collaborative virtual spaces and video conferencing
tools enables seamless communication and
collaboration among students and educators,
regardless of geographical location.
The increasing emphasis on computational thinking and
coding skills will continue to shape the future of K-12
education. As the demand for technological proficiency
grows, schools will prioritize teaching coding as a
fundamental skill. The integration of coding into the
curriculum fosters problem-solving, logical thinking and
creativity. It equips students with the necessary skills to
navigate the digital landscape and opens doors to
future career opportunities in technology and
innovation.
Furthermore, the future of K-12 education will place a
strong focus on fostering social-emotional learning
(SEL) skills. Recognizing the importance of emotional
intelligence, empathy and interpersonal skills, schools
will implement programs and practices that nurture
students' social and emotional well-being. SEL
programs will support the development of self-
awareness, responsible decision-making and positive
relationships, empowering students to thrive
academically and personally.

r. A.J. Merlino is a five-time GRAMMY-
Dnominated educator with a passion for
cultivating creativity and innovation in higher
education. He started his academic career at Kutztown
University, where he completed his Bachelor of Arts in
Music, and later earned his Master of Music and Doctor
of Musical Arts degrees at the University of Nevada, Las
Vegas.
While studying at UNLV, Dr. Merlino also served as a
performer, music director, composer, and project
manager in high-profile events such as the Billboard
Music Awards and Cirque du Soleil's One Night for One
Drop, held at some of the biggest venues in Las Vegas.
Through this work, he collaborated with renowned
artists like Cee Lo Green, Delta Rae, Eric Marienthal,
Darlene Love, Ronnie Vannucci of The Killers, and
Jay-Z.
Harrisburg University is a private non-profit institution
in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, with additional locations in
Philadelphia, Panama, Dubai, and online. Founded in
2001, the university has gained a reputation for its
innovative programs and focus on experiential learning.
We at CIOLook, interviewed Dr. A.J. Merlino to
understand his vision as a coherent leader of the
education sector.
Let's delve into the excerpts from the exclusive interview:
Brief our audience about your journey as an education
leader until your current position at Harrisburg
University of Science and Technology. What chal-
lenges have you had to overcome to reach where you
are today?
In the final year of my doctorate, I secured a full-time
teaching position at Kutztown University as an instruc-
tor of percussion studies and the director of various
ensembles. While there, I founded the Reading Samba
School, a 401(c)3 non-profit organization that provided
free music lessons and workshops to the community.
This organization boasted over 50 regular members
until it ceased operations during the pandemic.
Following this experience, I was hired as the Director of
Music Industry Studies and Assistant Professor of
Music Business at Albright College, where I led the
development of the Music Industry Studies major. I
later became the Associate Dean of Student
Professional Development and Experiential Learning
and enhanced operations by developing articulation
and partnership agreements with strategic institutions
of higher education and businesses, significantly
improving student postgraduate outcomes
institution-wide.
The future of education
will be characterized
by personalized, adaptive,

During the pandemic, I felt compelled to positively
impact higher education beyond my institution.
Drawing upon my understanding of the challenges and
opportunities faced by educational institutions, I
founded a higher education consulting business called
Empower-EDU.
At Harrisburg University of Science and Technology, I am
the Associate Vice President of Student Professional
Development & Experiential Learning and Associate
Professor of Business & Live Entertainment. Firstly, I
oversee operations in the Career Services and Experi-
ential Learning Office and work closely with senior
leadership and the wider HU community to develop and
formalize an infrastructure that expands experiential
learning options across the institution. Secondly, I am
responsible for developing new programs in Entertain-
ment Technology, Arts, Entertainment and Media
Management, and Fermentation Science. This involves
designing and instructing experiential career develop-
ment, live entertainment, and entertainment technol-
ogy courses.
To me, the most significant challenges and gratifying
aspects of my career are interconnected. Most success-
ful leaders in the education field consider themselves
lifelong learners and thrive on continuous improvement
and challenge. Achieving the balance between continu-
ous improvement, professional development, personal
growth, and familial obligations without sacrificing one
is challenging. During this pursuit, I lost interest in
writing and performing music, a significant part of my
identity, for over two decades. I discovered that passion
is not a constant state and can fluctuate. Losing interest
in a passion doesn't mean the things you once enjoyed
are no longer valuable or meaningful. Instead, it shows
that you are evolving and growing, and your interests
are evolving too. When I lost interest in my passion,
I took it as a chance to explore new things, find
new sources of inspiration, and learn more
about myself.
Tell us something more about your university and its
mission and vision.
Harrisburg offers various undergraduate, graduate, and
professional degree programs and certificates in
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
(STEM). However, we aim to redefine what it means to
be a STEM institution by including programs in Interac-

One of Harrisburg University's distinctive features is
our focus on hands-on, project-based learning. In
addition to our industry partnerships, the university
also features more than a dozen centers & institutes
and the HU Presents concert series that provide
experiential opportunities for students across a broad
range of programs and interests. This approach brings
students, faculty, government organizations, and
businesses together to find solutions for real-world
problems.
Harrisburg University Mission
The Harrisburg University of Science and Technology
offers innovative academic and research programs in
science and technology that respond to local and global
needs. The institution fosters a diverse community of
learners, provides access and supports the students to
pursue a career in science and technology. It also

interdisciplinary competencies and strong linkages
to career development.
Ÿ The desired outcome is the emergence of well-
qualified, technically expert graduates whose
understanding of applied science and technology-
related fields is honed by direct industry experience
and rounded by a sound, cross-disciplinary liberal
education.
Enlighten us on how you have impacted the education
sector through your expertise in the market.
Throughout my experience as a performer and project
manager, I have developed a unique skill set that allows
me to resolve problems with creativity and innovation,
helping me work collaboratively with institutions to
improve educational programming and student
learning opportunities.
www.ciolook.com | June 2023 |

I have worked with institutions to develop flexible
curricula that engages learners and prepares them
for the careers of the future, while also meeting the
needs of a diverse student population. My experi-
ence in learning through hands-on application helps
inform my efforts to create curricula and opportuni-
ties that blend theoretical knowledge with applied
practice. Through my expertise, I have developed and
implemented numerous strategies that positively
impact student enrollment, matriculation, retention,
and postgraduate success.
One of my strengths as a leader in higher education
has been my ability to communicate effectively with
key stakeholders to successfully present the goals
and objectives of institutions and build critical
partnerships that have promoted continued engage-
ment.
Through my collaborative efforts with government
officials, community organizations, and businesses, I
have built critical partnerships that have promoted
the continued engagement of all education stake-
holders. Through these collaborations, I have
successfully increased educational programming and
learning opportunities for students while bridging
the workforce skill and experience gap by connecting
students with employment opportunities that match
their skill sets and interests.
Describe in detail the values and the work culture
that drives your organization.
A set of core values, including diversity, inclusion,
innovation, excellence, and social responsibility,
drives Harrisburg University. These values are
reflected in the university's work culture, which is
collaborative, supportive, and results driven. The
university emphasizes the importance of teamwork
to achieve shared goals and encourages its staff and
students to be creative, proactive, and solution
oriented.
Harrisburg University's culture is characterized by a
commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and
service, focusing on meeting the needs of students
and the community, and is dedicated to fostering a
supportive learning environment that is inclusive and
responsive to students' needs. In addition to our
internal work culture, Harrisburg University strongly
emphasizes collaborations outside the university.

Undeniably, Technology is playing a significant role in
almost every sector. How are you leveraging techno-
logical advancements to make your education
resourceful?
Harrisburg University leverages technology in various
ways to enhance our students' educational experience.
The institution has made significant investments to
offer students access to high-tech equipment com-
monly used by professionals in their respective fields,
matching industry standards.
In addition to physical and technological resources, our
university offers online programs and digital platforms
that enable students to access course materials and
interact with peers and instructors from any location
worldwide. Our online and hybrid learning models
provide flexibility and accessibility, especially for
individuals who face obstacles to traditional, in-person
education.
Furthermore, we incorporate immersive technologies,
such as virtual and augmented reality, to enable
students to apply their learning in practical settings
offering hands-on experience and a deeper understand-
ing of how the concepts learned in class apply to real-
world situations.
What, according to you, could be the next significant
change in the education sector? How are you prepar-
ing to be a part of that change?
The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the trend
towards online and remote learning and high-flex
curricula, requiring alterations to instructional peda-
gogy and re-evaluating the need for physical campus
resources.
Institutions will increasingly collaborate with industry
partners to obtain facilities and equipment to facilitate
instruction, focusing on concurrent classroom and on-
the-job training, similar to residencies and apprentice-
ships but within the framework of a four-year degree.
This shift will lead to greater customization and
personalization of curricula to better suit students'
needs and abilities, improving student outcomes and
engagement by tailoring the learning experience to
each student's unique goals.
At Harrisburg University, we are fully embracing these
changes by providing a range of online programs and
courses for remote learning. We have invested signifi-
cantly in cutting-edge technologies and teaching
methodologies, including extended reality and AI-
powered educational tools, to support personalized and
adaptive learning.
Our partnerships with industry leaders are integral to
the learning experience at Harrisburg University and
will continue to facilitate the alignment of our curricula
with the needs of the industry.
Where do you envision yourself to be in the long run,
and what are your future goals for Harrisburg Univer-
sity of Science and Technology?
I am an enthusiastic lifelong learner who enjoys
acquiring new skills and competencies. The substance
of my work is more important than my professional
title.
My long-term aspiration is to positively impact the field
of education by fostering more inclusive access to high-
quality instruction and helping underrepresented
populations build social capital through the programs I
design. In addition, I aim to keep pace with the evolving
education landscape and to collaborate with industry
leaders to influence the development of future-
oriented institutions that better serve students.
As a first-generation college student, I understand
firsthand the difficulties of pursuing higher education
with limited guidance. As a result, my objective is to
help students overcome these challenges by developing
opportunities and support systems that are sensitive to
their individual needs.
At Harrisburg University, I hope to enhance the
experiential learning offerings for our students, create
partnerships with industry leaders, collaborate with
faculty to develop innovative teaching methods and
contribute to the institution's global recognition as a
leader in higher education.

and institutions operate. The use of educational
technology has become essential for teachers because
of its importance in today's education industry.
The technological advances made over the years have
impacted every field of life. As technology has become
more accessible, it has penetrated into every part of our

Driven by her entrepreneurial spirit, she fearlessly
explored untapped avenues, making remarkable
contributions to the field.
Below are highlights of the interview that showcases Dr.
Sherif's contributions to the realms of education,
Brief our audience about your journey as an
educational leader until your current position at Lone
Star College. What challenges have you had to
overcome to reach where you are today?
Most people think it is very difficult to restart your
career journey, especially when you are almost at the
pinnacle of your career. Restarting a career as an
immigrant who packed her life in a few suitcases can be
challenging but also transformative. This decision often
requires careful planning, adaptability, and resilience.
When the Arab Spring broke out, it had far-reaching
effects on the economy and personal life. We navigated
unemployment and other restrictions due to stay-home

orders. We thought about relocating in pursuit of
educational opportunities and economic mobility.
The United States has long been a destination for
individuals seeking a fresh start and the chance to
pursue their dreams. I didn’t know if a restart was even
possible, and my options seemed very limited. The first
interview I had was in a photocopier repair shop.
Talking about serving as a coordinator for global
conferences or meeting with world leaders in person
seemed to be a huge exaggeration during my interview.
My interviewer was laughing the whole time and did
not give me the job thinking I made up all of these
stories.
My journey as an immigrant presented me with
distinctive challenges that extended beyond the typical
language barriers and cultural adjustments. The most
significant hurdles I faced revolved around differences
in professional qualifications and expectations.
Nonetheless, higher education became a welcoming
sanctuary, offering a myriad of opportunities to help me
reintegrate into the workforce and pursue my dreams.
Through its embrace, I found a path to fulfill my
aspirations.
An essential aspect of relaunching a career involved
assessing one's current skills and qualifications while
identifying any gaps in one's toolbox. It was during my
time in higher education that I discovered the vast
opportunities available to pursue a doctorate degree.
This became my next goal—a terminal degree that I
eagerly aspired to achieve.
Throughout the arduous journey of balancing school,
two jobs, and caring for three children, my family
provided unwavering support. The moment of my
graduation swept away years of stress and the lingering
regret of missing important deadlines. Furthermore, I
recognized the significance of networking and
establishing professional connections in propelling my
career.
Engaging with professional organizations, community
service, attending industry events, and utilizing online
platforms helped me expand my network and tap into a
broader range of job opportunities. It's also essential to
update one's resume and tailor it to the expectations
and preferences of the dynamic job market.
Enlighten us on how you have impacted the education
niche through your expertise in the market.
Coming from a background in marketing gave me a
unique niche in higher education. A deep understanding
of marketing tools and tactics is a valuable asset to any
industry. Higher education institutions often have
specific needs and challenges when it comes to
promoting their programs and attracting students.
The experience in marketing that I gained during my
tenure with the U.S. Department of Commerce gave me
a textured understanding to develop effective
strategies to reach and engage various target
audiences.
It's important to leverage your expertise to identify key
opportunities and differentiate your institution or
program from competitors. Understanding the needs
and preferences of prospective students, as well as
trends in the higher education landscape, can give you a
competitive edge in creating targeted campaigns that
resonate with your prospective students.
Additionally, your unique niche can allow you to tailor
your messaging and branding to highlight the specific
benefits and value propositions of your institution or
program. This can help attract the right students who
align with your offerings and increase enrollment,
retention and completion rates.
Undeniably, Technology is playing a significant role in
almost every sector. How are you leveraging
technological advancements to make your education
resourceful?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Virtual Reality (VR) are
emerging as the most powerful agents of change in
higher education. AI can be used to create adaptive
learning platforms that tailor educational content and
personalize delivery methods to individual students'
needs and preferences.
AI-powered virtual tutors can provide students with
personalized assistance and feedback, helping them to
better understand complex concepts and improve their
problem-solving skills. Similarly, VR can provide
students with immersive and interactive experiences in
virtual laboratories or simulated environments. This
allows learners to practice and apply their knowledge in
a safe and controlled setting while enhancing their
understanding of real-world scenarios.

What, according to you, could be the next significant
change in the education sector? How is you are
preparing to be a part of that change?
In recent years, there has been a noticeable shift
towards online learning in higher education. This trend
has been further accelerated by the COVID-19
pandemic, which has necessitated remote learning for
all students.
There are several reasons why more students are
opting for online modalities and showing less
willingness to take face-to-face classes, including
flexibility, work-life integration, convenience, cost-
effectiveness, extended access, technological
advancements and changes in lifestyle. Online learning
provides students with the flexibility to access course
materials and participate in classes at their own pace
and according to their own schedule. This is particularly
appealing to students who have work or family
commitments or prefer a more self-directed approach
to learning. As a result, online learning eliminates the
need for commuting or relocating, which can be a
significant factor for students who live far from campus
or have other logistical constraints.
It allows them to study from anywhere with an internet
connection. Online programs often attract a diverse
range of students who may not have been able to
attend traditional face-to-face classes due to
geographical, financial, or personal limitations. Online
learning provides greater access to education for
individuals who may not have been able to pursue it
otherwise.
The advancement of technology has made online
learning more engaging and interactive. With the
integration of AI, VR, and other innovative tools,
students can now have immersive learning experiences
comparable to face-to-face classes.
Where do you envision yourself to be in the long run,
and what are your future goals for Lone Star College?
My dream is to start a non-profit that I will call 'Find My
First Job.' I have seen so many devastated students who
struggle to find their first job after graduation. During
economic contractions like this one, the industry is less
willing to give a chance to fresh grads with limited
industry experience.
Some of them get so frustrated that they quickly
deviate from their life and career goals. The non-profit
will provide a mentorship program that connects
experienced professionals with fresh graduates.
Mentors can provide guidance, support, and industry
insights, helping graduates navigate the job search
process and build their professional network.
Additionally, I will establish partnerships with local
businesses, companies, and organizations to create
opportunities for job placement. I will help with resume
building, interview preparation, and career counseling
to enhance graduates' chances of securing
employment.
The non-profit will also help organize networking
events, workshops, and seminars to facilitate
connections between graduates and potential
employers. These events can also provide skill-building
opportunities and career development resources.

  • 24. During the pandemic, I felt compelled to positively impact higher education beyond my institution. Drawing upon my understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by educational institutions, I founded a higher education consulting business called Empower-EDU. At Harrisburg University of Science and Technology, I am the Associate Vice President of Student Professional Development & Experiential Learning and Associate Professor of Business & Live Entertainment. Firstly, I oversee operations in the Career Services and Experi- ential Learning Office and work closely with senior leadership and the wider HU community to develop and formalize an infrastructure that expands experiential learning options across the institution. Secondly, I am responsible for developing new programs in Entertain- ment Technology, Arts, Entertainment and Media Management, and Fermentation Science. This involves designing and instructing experiential career develop- ment, live entertainment, and entertainment technol- ogy courses. To me, the most significant challenges and gratifying aspects of my career are interconnected. Most success- ful leaders in the education field consider themselves lifelong learners and thrive on continuous improvement and challenge. Achieving the balance between continu- ous improvement, professional development, personal growth, and familial obligations without sacrificing one is challenging. During this pursuit, I lost interest in writing and performing music, a significant part of my identity, for over two decades. I discovered that passion is not a constant state and can fluctuate. Losing interest in a passion doesn't mean the things you once enjoyed are no longer valuable or meaningful. Instead, it shows that you are evolving and growing, and your interests are evolving too. When I lost interest in my passion, I took it as a chance to explore new things, find new sources of inspiration, and learn more about myself. The United States has long been a destination for individuals seeking a fresh start and the chance to pursue their dreams. I didn’t know if a restart was even possible, and my options seemed very limited. The first interview I had was in a photocopier repair shop. Talking about serving as a coordinator for global conferences or meeting with world leaders in person seemed to be a huge exaggeration during my interview. My interviewer was laughing the whole time and did not give me the job thinking I made up all of these stories. My journey as an immigrant presented me with distinctive challenges that extended beyond the typical language barriers and cultural adjustments. The most significant hurdles I faced revolved around differences in professional qualifications and expectations. Nonetheless, higher education became a welcoming sanctuary, offering a myriad of opportunities to help me reintegrate into the workforce and pursue my dreams. • 37. What, according to you, could be the next significant change in the education sector? How is you are preparing to be a part of that change? In recent years, there has been a noticeable shift towards online learning in higher education. This trend has been further accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has necessitated remote learning for all students. There are several reasons why more students are opting for online modalities and showing less willingness to take face-to-face classes, including flexibility, work-life integration, convenience, cost- effectiveness, extended access, technological advancements and changes in lifestyle. Online learning provides students with the flexibility to access course materials and participate in classes at their own pace and according to their own schedule. This is particularly appealing to students who have work or family commitments or prefer a more self-directed approach to learning. As a result, online learning eliminates the need for commuting or relocating, which can be a significant factor for students who live far from campus or have other logistical constraints. It allows them to study from anywhere with an internet connection. Online programs often attract a diverse range of students who may not have been able to attend traditional face-to-face classes due to geographical, financial, or personal limitations. Online learning provides greater access to education for individuals who may not have been able to pursue it otherwise. The advancement of technology has made online learning more engaging and interactive. With the integration of AI, VR, and other innovative tools, students can now have immersive learning experiences comparable to face-to-face classes. Where do you envision yourself to be in the long run, and what are your future goals for Lone Star College? My dream is to start a non-profit that I will call 'Find My First Job.' I have seen so many devastated students who struggle to find their first job after graduation. During economic contractions like this one, the industry is less willing to give a chance to fresh grads with limited industry experience. Some of them get so frustrated that they quickly deviate from their life and career goals. The non-profit will provide a mentorship program that connects experienced professionals with fresh graduates. Mentors can provide guidance, support, and industry insights, helping graduates navigate the job search process and build their professional network. Additionally, I will establish partnerships with local businesses, companies, and organizations to create opportunities for job placement. I will help with resume building, interview preparation, and career counseling to enhance graduates' chances of securing employment. The non-profit will also help organize networking events, workshops, and seminars to facilitate connections between graduates and potential employers. These events can also provide skill-building opportunities and career development resources. www.ciolook.com | June 2023 | 35
