Be Proactive
Based on the work of Stephen Covey and the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
 Being proactive is about taking
responsibility for your life. You can't
keep blaming everything on
someone else – like your parents or
the weather.
 Proactive people know that you
choose your behaviour.

Begin with the end in mind

 Beginning with the end in mind is
about visualising your goal. It is
about finding out who you are and
what makes you YOU. Begin each
day or opportunity with a clear
direction and do what you can to
be a good person as you work to
get there.

Put First Things First
Based on the work of Stephen Covey and the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
 Habit 3 is about working out what is
important in life, saying ‘no’ to
some things so that you can be
organised and prioritise the things
that are worth the most to you in
your life. Make plans to stop doing
the less important things that
waste your time.

Habit 4
Think Win Win
Based on the work of Stephen Covey and the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
 Habit 4 - think win-win is about always
looking for ways to cooperate with
others so that everyone benefits. This
means changing a common view that
someone always has to win. You have to
balance courage in what you believe
in with consideration for others.

The Balancing Act
Covey says that to do this you need three character traits:
 Integrity: sticking with your true feelings, values, and commitments
 Maturity: expressing your ideas and feelings with courage and consideration for
the ideas and feelings of others
 Abundance Mentality: believing there is plenty for everyone.

Seek first to understand,
then to be understood
Based on the work of Stephen Covey and the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
 Habit 5 is about trying to understand
someone else’s point of view before
sharing your own. When you do, a
whole new world will open up to you.
Take the time to listen without judging
or giving advice.

Listen with Empathy
Here are some tips for more empathic listening
 Give your undivided attention.
 Don’t judge, but in or compare with your own experiences.
 Observe the emotions – is the person angry, afraid or hurt.
 Give space for the speaker to respond to their own questions and
thoughts.
 Ask questions that clarify, or re-phrase what you’ve heard to show
that you understand.

Habit 6
Synergise
Based on the work of Stephen Covey and the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
Synergy is the habit of creative
cooperation. It means teamwork
and cooperation based on
valuing difference, being open to
other influences and gaining new
ideas and insight.

by ourselves. It is the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of the

Sharpen the Saw
Based on the work of Stephen Covey and the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
 Habit 7 - sharpen the Saw means taking
care of yourself and having a balanced
program for self-renewal in the four areas
of your life: physical, social/emotional,
mental, and spiritual. Every day is a new
opportunity to recharge yourself, reflect
on what you have learned and re-focus on
what adds value to your life. All it takes is
the desire, knowledge, and skill.

The 7 habits in GBS

  • 1. Introducing the 7 Habits to GBS Leaders In the following slides you will have: 1. An introduction to each of the 7 habits 2. An opportunity to think about where you are and what you can improve 3. Questions to ask yourself 4. Tools and tips for putting it into action 5. A chance to reflect on how you will support GB members to grow and develop. Take notes as you go!
  • 2. Habit 1 Be Proactive Based on the work of Stephen Covey and the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.  Being proactive is about taking responsibility for your life. You can't keep blaming everything on someone else – like your parents or the weather.  Proactive people know that you choose your behaviour.
  • 3. Where are you now? Very Reactive Very Proactive How could you be more proactive? 1 10
  • 4. Have you ever exploded at something or someone? How often have you said I can, I will, I prefer, I believe today? How much do you focus on the things you can change and influence? Answer these questions…

  • 7. Habit 2 Begin with the end in mind Based on the work of Stephen Covey and the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.  Beginning with the end in mind is about visualising your goal. It is about finding out who you are and what makes you YOU. Begin each day or opportunity with a clear direction and do what you can to be a good person as you work to get there.

Habit 3 Put First Things First Based on the work of Stephen Covey and the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.  Habit 3 is about working out what is important in life, saying ‘no’ to some things so that you can be organised and prioritise the things that are worth the most to you in your life. Make plans to stop doing the less important things that waste your time.

Habit 4 Think Win Win Based on the work of Stephen Covey and the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.  Habit 4 - think win-win is about always looking for ways to cooperate with others so that everyone benefits. This means changing a common view that someone always has to win. You have to balance courage in what you believe in with consideration for others.
  • 18. Where are you now? I want to be the only winner I like everyone to do well How could you get better at cooperating with others and finding a win-win? 1 10
  • 19. What do you usually do in a conflict or argument - get angry, run away or find solutions? Do you ever do ANYTHING to win, even if it hurts others? What can you do to be kind to others when they do well? Answer these questions…

The Balancing Act Covey says that to do this you need three character traits:  Integrity: sticking with your true feelings, values, and commitments  Maturity: expressing your ideas and feelings with courage and consideration for the ideas and feelings of others  Abundance Mentality: believing there is plenty for everyone. List examples of ways you can show these traits as a leader in GBS Integrity Maturity Abundance Mentality
  • 21. Think: Think about the times you will need to support girls in Girls’ Brigade to think win win. How will you guide them?
  • 22. Habit 5 Seek first to understand, then to be understood Based on the work of Stephen Covey and the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.  Habit 5 is about trying to understand someone else’s point of view before sharing your own. When you do, a whole new world will open up to you. Take the time to listen without judging or giving advice.
  • 23. Where are you now? I don’t feel comfortable with silences I always try to make sure I understand How could you get better at understanding, before trying to be understood? 1 10
  • 24. Do you tend to listen and say, yeah that happened to me and give advice on what you would do? Do you ever pretend to listen, or only listen to parts of what you’re hearing? How often do you really listen without judging, advising or trying to come up with the solution? Answer these questions…
  • 25. Listen with Empathy Here are some tips for more empathic listening  Give your undivided attention.  Don’t judge, but in or compare with your own experiences.  Observe the emotions – is the person angry, afraid or hurt.  Give space for the speaker to respond to their own questions and thoughts.  Ask questions that clarify, or re-phrase what you’ve heard to show that you understand. What types of questions and comments might work when you listen with empathy?
  • 26. Think: Think about the times you will need to understand the emotions and experiences of girls in Girls’ Brigade. How will you listen? When you come from a place of understanding rather than judging, it becomes easier to respond with love.
  • 27. Habit 6 Synergise Based on the work of Stephen Covey and the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Synergy is the habit of creative cooperation. It means teamwork and cooperation based on valuing difference, being open to other influences and gaining new ideas and insight.
  • 28. Where are you now? I work well with others. I’d rather work by myself. How could you be better at working with others? 1 10
  • 29. Are two heads better than one? How can you celebrate difference in GBS? How does someone disagreeing with you help you learn? Answer these questions…
  • 30. Synergy Action Plan Define the Problem Make sure you understand the problem or task. Their Way Try to understand everyone’s ideas. Listen carefully. My Way Seek to be understood. Share your ideas. Our Way Be creative. Everyone create new ideas. High Way Find best solution. Synergy lets us discover jointly things we are much less likely to discover by ourselves. It is the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Use this guide to work through a task or project.

Habit 7 Sharpen the Saw Based on the work of Stephen Covey and the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.  Habit 7 - sharpen the Saw means taking care of yourself and having a balanced program for self-renewal in the four areas of your life: physical, social/emotional, mental, and spiritual. Every day is a new opportunity to recharge yourself, reflect on what you have learned and re-focus on what adds value to your life. All it takes is the desire, knowledge, and skill.
  • 33. Where are you now? I’m too busy thinking about other things to focus on me. I always try to take time out to learn, develop and keep healthy & happy. How could you get better at sharpening your saw? 1 10
