18 May 1940
Construc;on starts on the 450
acre site. Purpose to
manufacture muni;ons.
October 1942
10,000 workers served 4 factory
sta;ons and a circular railway
comprising 25 miles of track.
April 1958
Produc;on ceases and the site
purchased on behalf of the
Na;onal Lending Library for
Science and Technology.

• Original accessible (BL can deliver within 24 hrs).
INDEPENDENT REPORT
….. speculated that, if all libraries were able to dispose of their holdings that duplicated
those held by the BL, as much as £103 million might be saved in the capital construc@on
costs of storage space in future.

BENEFITS and OUTCOMES
1. 92km of HE print content de-duplicated (average of 1.2metres / ;tle).
2. Es;mated capital savings to HE of £25m (£1.2m year on year)
3. Guaranteed document supply service in 24 hours.
4. Establishment of a na;onal research collec;on – print journals.
• Only 3% of what was offered to the BL was ingested (the BL already had it)
• Of the total document supply requests from UK-HE – only 0.2% originated from the 3%
donated by UK-HE.
• Currently studying Monographs.
