in Serbia in 2020.
2020 changed everything, including the ways of philanthropic giving.
Catalyst Balkans recorded and analyzed 4,319 instances of philanthropic giving in
Serbia. This is how citizens, companies, and individuals respond to the pandemic
and how they give for the common good of their communities.
Themes
While 1/3 of all instances of philanthropic giving are targeted at eliminating the harmful
effects caused by the coronavirus, the total value of donations for mitigating the
effects of the COVID-19 virus makes 42.1% of the recorded sum and surpasses the
donations for any other theme.

Donors
After few years of citizens being the most active and most numerous donors, during a year
of the pandemic, the corporate sector had donated more than half of the recorded sum
among all donors through 38.1% of instances of philanthropic giving.

Recipients
43.4 percent of the total donated amount is directed towards the state and public insti-
tutions due to the pandemic and healthcare crisis. Additionally, the support to the state was
directed through the non-profit organizations as an intermediary.
