How to recognise the symptoms of Attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
It’s normal for children to occasionally forget their homework, daydream
during class, act without thinking, or get fidgety at the classroom desk. But
inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity are also signs of attention deficit
disorder (ADD/ADHD), which can affect the child’s ability to learn and get
along with others. The first step to addressing the problem is to recognize
the signs and symptoms.
Katerina will help you recognise the symptoms and give practical tips on
how to deal with them in the classroom.

From Learning Styles to… Lifestyles
Why do students find learning difficult? Why some hate it altogether? Who is to
blame? Which seems to be more important: “What” we learn or “How” we learn? In our
session we are going to address these and some more questions, investigating the
field of Learning Styles. During the first part of the session we are going to analyse
the individual learning styles learners may develop and how we are able to identify
them either interactively, using particular instruments that do so orempirically,
through observation and normal classwork. In the second part we are going to
talk about classroom activities that can cater for these styles promoting individual
learning. The main premise is that optimal conditions for language learning occur
when the preferred (learning) style matches the learning environment, the methods
and the resources offered.

The Classroom Writing Process Cycle: exploring the effective
staging of Writing tasks
This presentation will present a principled framework for the staging of classroom
writing activity for learners at a range of levels between B2 and C1 and look at
practical examples of tasks that meet tagged objectives. Reference to criteria
identified in the Cambridge Common Scale of Writing will be made throughout.
We will also focus on the relationship between writing work and other skills’ work,
done in class, and ways of closely integrating writing input in the classroom with
extended writing work done out of classroom. A variety of techniques for giving
feedback on learners’ writing will be touched upon, as well as how varying forms
of feedback can develop more reflective writers.

Getting off to a good start!
No matter how long you’ve been teaching, the first day(s) of the new school
year is Always a little nerve-wracking. Even if some of your students are
returning, some will be new – and there will be new work for everyone.
How to get off to a successful start as the new school year begins? Creating
positive relationships - rapport - in the classroom is key to motivation and
successful language acquisition.
This talk describes and demonstrates common mistakes teachers make that
lead to failure to establish rapport in the classroom.

The ideal Coursebook for young learners (Young Stars)
Teachers often spend a lot of time creating their own materials in order to
meet specific instructional needs not covered in the coursebook they are
using, or to make their lessons more exciting and appealing to students. What
would a coursebook be like if it actually incorporated all these creative ideas
and materials? (Hands-on activities, interactive whiteboard material, etc.)
