Recommendation Report

  1. 1. 0 RECOMMENDATION REPORT Abstract Summary: With the imminent threat of global warming and dwindling natural resources, engineers have sought each other out to develop a roadmap to get the U.S. to run on 100 percent renewable energy by 2050 and that is why we are seeking out individuals to help make this ambitious goal a reality. Purpose: The purpose of this document is to inform you that there is an alternative method to dramatically improve the quality of life here on Earth. This document will introduce to you the current problem we face as a collective group and propose a way for you to help us fix this problem. SWITCHING OVER TO A RENEWABLE ELECTRIC ENERGY PROVIDER By: Chad Weiss

  3. 3. 2 Fig. 1 Background Problem: Ever since the start of the Industrial Revolution in the early 1800’s, the world has become heavily dependent on fossil fuels to generate heat, electricity, transportation and countless other things. These things include advances in science, exploration of new territories, war, modern medicine and promises of a higher quality of living; however, this dependency human civilization has developed has not gone without consequence. Although fossil fuels are formed “naturally” from the remains of deceased organisms over a time period of a hundred million years, do not confuse the term “natural resources” (aka fossil fuels) with “clean resources”; there is no correlation between the two. In fact, fossil fuels are human’s primary contributors to climate change and global warming. The problem is that fossil fuels have become our primary source of energy needed to generate electricity. The U.S. Energy Information Administration stated that, “In 2014, the United States generated about 4 billion kilowatt- hours (kWh) of electricity. About 67 percent of that electricity was generated via fossil fuels (i.e. coal, oil and natural gas).” Aside from generating electricity, the process of burning fossil fuels, converting chemical energy to thermal energy and thermal to kinetic and kinetic to electric, this process also produces greenhouse gases as a chemical byproduct. (See Fig. 1 for a visual of generating electricity from fossil fuels) Carbon dioxide (CO2), Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) and Methane (CH4), aka “Greenhouse Gases”, all contribute to global warming and climate change. These byproducts are exactly what make fossil fuels such a hazard to use. Greenhouse gases inherently radiate heat energy whenever they are hit by direct or reflecting sunlight, i.e. less heat is allowed to escape our atmosphere so long as more greenhouse gases are present. (See Fig. 2 for CO2 emissions) According to NASA’s Earth Observatory, CO2 levels, in the atmosphere, have gone up by 38 percent and CH4 levels as high as 148 percent since the start of the Industrial Revolution. Despite the fact that this isn’t much over 250
  4. 4. 3 years, this sort of progression is very similar to that of the rate of human population expansion. Needless to say that this is a very serious threat, many people do not take it as seriously as they should. We are supposed to be the positive role models in our children’s life and instead of hiding behind ignorance and nonchalance; we should be actively making an effort to fix this problem. Otherwise, we are teaching them that avoidance is the only way. What type of message would that be? Proposition Opportunity: Making the switch over to a clean, renewable electric energy provider is an opportunity that is valuable in more ways than just one. Not only will you benefit from this transition but others around you will have reason to thank you as well. You’ll not only be saving money but Earthlings too. As of right now, there are communities of motivated activists springing up all over the place wanting you to become their newest member. By switching to a 100 percent renewable, clean electric energy provider you will be making this switch over from one community to another. Www.thesolutionsproject.org is one of many online and real world communities that feel strongly about saving humanity and less about making more money. Most oil company owners will buy out a landowner’s wind rights, if he or she is willing to sell all so that they will earn more money, halt progress towards a fossil fuel free future and monopolize the electric energy distribution industry for that land and nearby places, forever. So here’s the proposition, join the community that would rather see the Earth green and humanity technologically advanced versus the group who cares only about money and power. Your life will benefit greatly from it. Benefits Fig.2
  5. 5. 4 Happiness: Intuition, reason, introspection, philosophy and religion have tried to answer this age old question, “why do we live?” but the easiest answer is simply, our inherent desire to be happy. Our function in life is to become happy and many people think having money or power will bring them happiness however, history has shown that certain pleasures associated with money and power, (i.e. drugs, sex, gambling, etc.) have a tendency to make us unhappy. So what is it that truly makes us happy? Psychologists are beginning to discover that long term happiness is strongly associated with a persistent commitment to pursuing altruistic goals. Meaning, altruism doesn’t only correlate with happiness, it increases it. That is why 100 percent renewable, clean energy has the potential to increase your happiness, by helping you save money and help others in the process. You see, due to the fact that, when burned, coal releases vast amounts of SO2 and Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), both of which contribute to the formation of acid rain and furthermore crop damage, coal is costing you more money than would any of the cleaner alternatives (i.e. hydro, wind, or solar). Coal also releases particulates like Cadmium, Mercury and Lead which ultimately pollute our environment, which is why it costs more. Many coal powered power plants have to adhere to basic environmental standards to keep these particulates in the air to a minimum, so that’s why they use technology, all of which adds to the cost of your electric bill. The Alternative Future: As of 2010, the proven amount of oil reserves left worldwide was estimated to be around 1.34 trillion barrels. On a daily basis, the world consumes about 86 million barrels of oil per day. Coal, a purely carbon substance found within the Earth was one of the earliest sources of heat and light for our species. The world’s reserves of coal have been estimated at around 940 billion tons. Each year, the world consumes about 8 billion tons of this porous black rock for the purpose of generating electricity.
  6. 6. 5 Natural gases, including shale gas, lie in the Earth’s crust and are harvested by a technique known as fracking. As of 2010, the world’s natural reserves amounted to just about 178 trillion cubic meters with a consumption rate of about 3.27 trillion cubic meters per year. With these numbers in mind, the world will be depleted of its natural reserves of oil in 42 years, its natural gases in 54 years and its coal mines in 117 years roughly. So why wait till the company that is providing you with heat, cooling and electricity runs out of business due to lack of resources? The only thing that these fossil fuel powered energy providers will leave you with is a cold home, a polluted Earth and a letter of condolence saying, “Sorry, we are no longer able to provide you with our services. Good luck.” Ultimatum Choice: You have two options, stand by and do nothing or take action and make the world a better place for future generations to come. Start looking into the history of your current electric utility company and compare them with that of 100 percent renewable energy providers. Fossil Fuels have been an integral part to the advancement of our species since the beginning but now the end seems to be in sight. For the first time in human history, we are experiencing a time where we will have to wean ourselves from this method of energy and look towards a cleaner, renewable alternative. Instead of being the person to decide later rather than sooner, make the decision to be proactive and lead and teach others by setting a good example because all good leaders lead from the front. Finally, make the decision to be a person who supports economic equality and democracy over power hungry tyrants that are giant oil companies. You have the power of free will and use that to make a stand against the people that want to take that away from you. Choose clean energy, it will be the most thoughtful thing you have ever done for your planet.
  7. 7. 6 Options Due to the demands of your necessary criteria and your geographical location in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, you have a total of 17 different electric energy providers to choose from.
