2. CREATING COVER PHOTO-
The plan and production final product
Production final product
My original plan for the cover photo
was to focus on cogs and electrical
components however after receiving
feedback from peers I decided to go
in a different direction.
I maintained the wording and the images
are still the same however the cover
photo now focuses more on the arm and
the phone (the person affected by
modern media) rather than the electrical
components even though they are still
featured within the cover photo.
4. At this point in editing, I decided to keep the image in the
natural tone it was originally made in however I did
increase the saturation to make the features of the piece
pop. I used the magic wand tool and the lasso tool
coherently to remove the background of the image to
allow me to replace it with my own background. I added a
black background as not only would it make the image and
wording pop but is a common convention of cover photos.
As I had used sellotape it meant that there were shiny
parts apparent to the viewer on the skin which meant that
I had to use the healing brush tool to allow me to blend
these out and make the piece more believable and
realistic. I added a stitch using the magic wand to remove
the background and placed it on the outskirts of the zip
however I didn’t like the appearance of it and thought it
didn’t look realistic enough to be believable to the
audience therefore I removed it by deleting the layer.
Instead of the stitch I took a picture of a staple I had in the
house again using the magic wand tool and lasso tool to
remove the background of the image once I was happy
with the appearance, I then duplicated the layer multiple
times moving the them around to create the image in the
bottom right-hand corner.
5. I temporarily removed the background by
hiding the layer in order to see my image
more clearly. I then looked through the
fonts available on photoshop and found that
none of them matched the aesthetic I was
going with and therefore I went on Dafont
to look through a wider range of fonts. Once
I had found a font, I wanted to use which in
this case was doctor glitch I then
downloaded the font and installed it so that
I could use it on Photoshop. I then used the
horizontal type tool to add the wording
using my newly installed font. For the
wording I selected a neon green to link it to
the green seen in the image maintaining
continuity.
6. I then reapplied the black
background and used a
pre-installed font available on
photoshop to add, "Digitally Devoted
Britain" I decided to add this wording
in white to make it stand out as it is
not as big as the surgically attached
wording but allows for it to stand
out. I originally added a blue hue
around the hand as when
researching most of the inspiration
pictures incorporated blue however
when I added this it looked out of
place therefore, I altered the colour
to green as it made more sense to
match the colour to the title colour.
7. To make the piece more realistic I added
the typical conventions of a phone such
as the return and home button and a
display on the phone of system failure. I
also added stitches to go across the
wound and airbrushed them in order to
make the colour of the zip and stitches
match. I also added a phone charging
port at the tip of the little finger
allowing me to display my knowledge of
what would interest the audience. I also
added sparking wires underneath the
stitches this suggests and displays the
robotic and technical, AI side of
technology and the advances it has
made throughout time.
8. Product feedback
I like everything
Very detailed and creative
message
I like the metaphor of being
attached to our phones
Visually stunning
The design and message is
understandable
9. FINAL
PRODUCT
EVALUATION
I believe that the cover photo enabled me to get my message effectively
across to the audience whilst engaging them using a shock factor by
including horror/sci-fi elements to the piece. When showing a group of
people who were within the target audience age range, I received lots of
positive comments such as, "visually stunning" and ,"I like the metaphor
of being attached to our phones" which proves I was able to convey my
message to the audience and they understand how I have portrayed it.
My aim for the cover photo was to create something that not only
pleased the client and engaged the target audience age demographic but
create something that was out of the ordinary and not something
audiences are used to seeing as the BBC are not allowed to intentionally
attract a mainstream audience it meant that I could create a unique
piece and as the producer add a signature style to the piece without the
restrictions of having to appeal to a wide range audience giving me more
creative power in which direction I wanted the documentary to go and
how I wanted to engage my audience allowing me to be able to include
and showcase something that I haven't been able to do before due to the
nature of past projects. Due to the positive feedback and comments, I
have received about the piece I am going to stick to this cover photo with
no need to change anything due to the positive comments it has received
from a group of the target audience.
10. CREATING TITLE CARD
My original plan for the title card as seen below was to incorporate
elements of the cover photo whilst highlighting that this documentary is
made for Britain however after receiving feedback from peers in order to
showcase more of my skills, I stayed with the same concept however
rearranged the layout replacing the arm in the cover photo to a robot
cyborg. Not only did this allow me to showcase more of my skills but it also
allowed me to explore the common convention of a documentary where
the cover photo links but doesn’t match the title card.
13. I then looked through the fonts available on
photoshop and found that none of them
matched the aesthetic I was going with and
therefore I went on Dafont to look through a
wider range of fonts. Once I had found a font, I
wanted to use which in this case was doctor
glitch I then downloaded the font and installed it
so that I could use it on Photoshop. I then used
the horizontal type tool to add the wording using
my newly installed font. For the wording I
selected a neon green to maintain continuity
with the cover photo. To start the background
image, I selected a photo from my camera roll
and uploaded it to photoshop I then used the
magic wand tool and lasso tool to remove the
background and then I placed the image in the
position I wanted it and used the dodge tool to
brighten the image and make the colours pop I
then repeated this process for the remainder of
the background images placing them in positions
where the audience would be able to recognise
what and where they are but also managing to
allow them to all fit onto the title card.To add the
wording I used a pre-installed font available
on photoshop to add, "Digitally Devoted Britain" I
decided to add this wording in white to make it
stand out as it is not as big as the surgically
attached wording but allows for it to stand out.
15. Product Feedback
The Penshaw Monument photo
is out of focus
I like all of it
Good concept but the visuals are
off-putting
Informative, explains what it is
about very well
The image of
Penshaw Monument is out of
focus
Simple but effective
I like what is it trying to get
across, but I don't understand
the image of the girl
16. CHANGING MY
IDEA
The feedback I received from a group of people within the target
audience had mixed reviews about the piece as whilst I received some
positive comments such as "Informative, explains what it is about very
well" and "Simple but effective" I also received some negative
feedback such as "Good concept but the visuals are off-putting" and "I
like what is it trying to get across, but I don't understand the image of
the girl". Receiving this feedback and talking over it with friends made
me come to the conclusion that if I wanted to create a title card that
the audience not only understood but engaged with, I needed to go
back to the drawing board. I decided that for my new concept I would
keep the same lettering, black background and British landmark
theme along the bottom, but I would change the image from a robot
cyborg to a piece similar to the cover photo in theme but portrayed in
a different way. By changing my idea, it also meant that the cover
photo and title card would link maintaining continuity between
products making it easier for the viewer to identify the two
together.as I did receive some positive feedback when I ask for
feedback on the new title card I am going to make I will ask the group
which one they prefer and why and then make my decision about
which title card I will use in the documentary whether I alter the
existing to make it better or go with the new one.
18. I then looked through the fonts available
on photoshop and found that none of
them matched the aesthetic I was going
with and therefore I went on Dafont to look
through a wider range of fonts. Once I had
found a font, I wanted to use which in this
case was doctor glitch I then downloaded
the font and installed it so that I could use it
on Photoshop. I then used the horizontal
type tool to add the wording using my
newly installed font. For the wording
I selected a neon green to maintain
continuity with the cover photo and
previous title card. To add the subtitle, I
used the type tool selecting a pre-installed
font to use and selected the colour white as
although it wasn’t as big as the title
"surgically attached" I still wanted it to be
visible and stand out to the audience.
21. Feedback
I like the title; I feel like it
really makes sense with
how society is today with
technology and social
media
I like the effects on the
arm
This is less graphic; it isn't
as uncomfortable to look
at.
I like that the iconic
British buildings have
been used
22. CREATING THE DOCUMENTARY
When beginning post-production
my footage was in many
different places therefore, I
uploaded all the footage from my
SD card and phone onto
my computer. To make sure that
all the footage would be in the
same place I then inserted my SD
card into the computer creating a
separate folder on the SD card
where I imported all the footage I
required from my computer into
the folder.
23. I inserted my SD card into the computer
then proceeded to import my footage onto
premiere pro. When doing this I didn’t
have a specific layout of my footage I
imported them in order to check that the
picture quality hadn't been lost through
transferring the footage. I then spent
multiple hours going over each piece of
footage checking for sound quality as well
as removing audio and footage that as no
longer required using the razor tool to
carefully select where I wanted cut then
using the unlink tool to unlink the audio
from the footage and remove either one or
both together. After that had been
completed, I then rearranged the footage
to make it follow the pre-planned layout.
24. To create the opening to my documentary I
needed to include both the logo of the BBC and
the logo of northern voices I did this by finding
an image of the logo online then using the
snipping tool to select them and save them to
one drive. I then selected footage on premiere
pro by holding down the cursor and selecting all
the footage to move it back in order to make
room for the opening, this was also a way to
ensure that footage wouldn’t get cut off or go
missing and it was also more time effective than
if I had moved each piece of footage and audio
individually. I was then able to import the
graphic onto premiere pro and by selecting the
graphic and selecting motion I was able to resize
them in order for them to fit the screen and
appear how I wanted them to. I then watched
through the footage again making sure that all
audio and visuals were in sync, and everything
ran through smoothly.
25. A common convention of documentaries is to have a
soundtrack that exists throughout the documentary
raising in sound from time to time used to create
different emotions and variety for the audience it
also provides audio for when no other audio can be
used. To add this soundtrack, I used a copyright free
music website selecting a soundtrack that matched
the genre of the documentary. I then downloaded
my selected soundtrack and uploaded it to premiere
pro and altered the sound level to where it
increased when necessary and reduced to not
overpower the existing audio when necessary. I then
wanted to add a comment box graphic adding more
visuals to my documentary I did this by finding an
image online then using the snipping tool to select it
and saved it to one drive. I then uploaded the
graphic onto premiere pro however when taking a
step away and looking back at them as part of the
documentary I decided to go against this idea and
removed it from the premiere pro timeline.
26. I wanted to create the effect that posts were
appearing onscreen similarly to how they appear on
social media I did this by finding an image of articles
I wanted to use then using the snipping tool I
selected them and saved them to one drive. I was
then able to import the graphics onto premiere pro
and by selecting the graphic and selecting motion I
was able to resize and relocate them in order for
them to fit on the screen and appear how I wanted
them to. For the audio I then used a copyright free
stock audio of an iPhone notification ringing and
downloaded it onto my one drive where once again
I was then able to place it onto premiere pro. Once
it was on premiere pro, I then copied the file so that
each article that came up had its own sound effect
to go with it I then made sure that each of the
sounds lined up with the appearance of an article
on screen creating a seamless transition for the
viewing audience. I then repeated this step to make
another set of pop-up articles for later on in the
documentary.
27. I decided that within the opening I wanted to
add an overlay of an old VHS tape linking the
theme of technology through the different
eras. To do this I first found my video on a
channel that provides free video overlays to
download and downloaded it onto one drive
and imported it into premiere pro. Since I had
no experience using an overlay before I asked
some friends, and they were unsure as well
therefore I decided to do some research
through the internet and found a tutorial on
YouTube. Through this tutorial I was able to
follow the instructions to create my desired
effect by selecting the video going to affect
controls and then trying the different blend
modes to see which one look the best in this
case "screen" produced the best result.
28. ADDING TIK TOKS
Social media is primarily on phones however is discussed and
brought to life through many media platforms for instance
television stations reporting news on it films and documentaries
about social media and its effects but social media has now
broken down more barriers as when I was scrolling through Tik
Tok I came across a national theatre play called "our generation"
this play focuses on what it is like to be a young person in today's
society and the challenges they face with a diverse range of
characters the play shows the audience a true representation of
how social media is taking over everyone's lives. I wanted to
include snip-it's of this play into my documentary as not only
would it break up talking heads, but it also allows for strong
messages to be displayed to the audience in a new way. To do
this I first downloaded the Tik Tok and sent it to my computer
through email, I then downloaded it onto one drive and from
there imported it onto premiere pro. As Tik Toks are portrait
videos this created big black bars on either side of the video
therefore I found an image I wanted to use then using
the snipping tool I selected it and saved it to one drive. I
was then able to import the graphics onto premiere pro and by
selecting the graphic and selecting motion tool I was able to
resize it in order for it to fill the screen and appear how I wanted
it to making sure that the graphic was on the video layer below
the Tik Tok so that it wasn’t covered over.
29. When working on my documentary for
the graphics they appeared quite
abruptly and transitions between shots
were also quite abrupt therefore I
selected effects where I found video
transitions this allowed me to add
effects to not only video footage but the
graphics as well. Using a range of
transitions such as cross dissolve push
and many more I was able to add them
to graphics and footage creating
seamless transitions between footage
and softening transitions of appearing
and disappearing graphics.
30. Feedback-Draft One
• The last question cuts off, but the rest is really good
• Could add in more things like articles to backup points. The
sound is really good
• Sound is good – good music level to audio ratio
• Tik Tok notification section slightly rushed
• Title card is off-putting
• Ad news stories to back up points
• No end credits
31. ADDING
AN
OVERLAY
To add more variety to the documentary I decided to add a
corresponding overlay to the audio. To do this I first found my
video on a channel that provides free video overlays
to download and downloaded it onto one drive and imported it
into premiere pro. Since I had no experience using a green
screen overlay, I asked some friends, and they were unsure as
well therefore I decided to do some research through the
internet and found a tutorial on YouTube. In the search bar on
premiere pro, I found the ultra-key and added it to the overlay
which was supposed to remove the green screen however this
didn’t work therefore I selected the video went to
affect controls and then trying the different blend modes to see
which one look the best, in this case "darken" produced the
best result.
32. To create my ending credits, I first
found a copyright free stock video
downloaded it and imported it to
premiere pro. I then used the
type tool to type directly onto the
video, then using the select tool I
repositioned the text. I then
repeated this steps multiple times
to create all the different
components for the ending
credits.
Creating the
Ending Credits
33. I decided to add the social
media graphics to match
the audio adding
more visuals to my
documentary I did this by
finding the images online
then using the snipping
tool to select it and saved
it to one drive I then
repeated this for the
remaining graphics.
Then uploading
the graphics onto
premiere pro and
arranging them by order
in which they were
spoken about.
34. Feedback-draft two
• It is very good; I enjoy the talking head shots and the
different scenes that link up with what the 'Voice of God' is
talking about
• It's good, I think the editing is good as well as the
structure/narrative
• Last question cuts off
• Maybe try to hide the cuts better
• Could add in more things like articles to backup points.
35. To break up the continued
interview that is a focal point
of the documentary based on
the feedback I received I
decided to add a pop up of
news articles to back up the
answers given by the
interviewee. I did this by
finding the articles I wanted
to use online then used the
snipping tool to select and
save the images which
allowed me to insert them
into premiere pro then by
selecting each graphic I was
able to use the motion tool
in order to reposition the
graphic to where they
could be seen all at the same
time.
36. Again, when working on my
documentary after receiving
feedback, the graphics still appeared
quite abruptly and transitions between
shots were also quite abrupt therefore I
selected and altered effects where I
found video transitions this allowed me
to add effects to not only video footage
but the graphics as well. Using a range of
transitions such as cross dissolve push
and many more I was able to add them
to graphics and footage creating
seamless transitions between footage
and softening transitions of appearing
and disappearing graphics.
37. Young minds
Although it was not a possibility to get an
interview with young minds, they did give
me permission to use existing videos they
had created. Therefore, I looked through
videos already existing and found one
that fit well within my documentary and
downloaded it to one drive I was then able
to upload to my documentary I then moved
the end of my documentary by selecting all
the clips and moved them along in order to
make room for the video. I then used the
razor tool to cut the soundtrack and moved
it along to the end of the imported clip. I
then selected audio transitions and then
used exponential fade for the end of the
soundtrack and constant gain for the
reintroducing the soundtrack.
38. DRAFT 3
SELF
ASSESMENT
For my 3rd draft when I uploaded it to
YouTube and watched the documentary back,
I realised that one set of notification sound
effects were misplaced and played at the
wrong time I also realised that the ending
credit clips were too short for the audience to
be able to read. Therefore, I will aim to resolve
this and alter the times of the ending credits
making them longer and legible for the
audience. For the end credits I also included a
hashtag allowing me to show the audience
that I understand the concepts of what
interests them however I feel that the
hashtag graphic should last longer and maybe
be included in more areas of the
documentary.
39. Extending graphics, adding
hashtag and fixing sound effect
To extend the graphics making them last longer in
the end credits I selected the graphic I wanted to
extend and then used the arrows that appear when
hovering over one of the ends of the graphic to
elongate the graphics repositioning them in the
timeline as required. I then used the type tool and
selected the frame in the beginning of the
documentary, allowing me to type directly onto the
videoclip I then changed the wording colour to
white and reduced the size this allowed it to stand
out providing a contrast to the background but also
allowed it to not overpower the video clip. When
reviewing the third draft of my product I realised
that the notifications sounds I had used for one
group of them had been misplaced therefore I
found the set of notification tools and selected
them by holding down ctrl and clicking on each
sound effect I was then able to move them as a
group to where they were originally supposed to
40. FINAL DRAFT FEEDBACK
It's good and the editing is done well
it is very good
great. Edited and produced well, included some very valid points and your
message was very clear.
I really liked the documentary I thought it was really informative, the editing
was great furthermore, I liked how you used the voice of god and how you
used the interview too
I like the use of the hashtag as it enables the audience to actively participate in
the documentary and it shows your knowledge of social media.
