  5. 5. • Adult learners have short attention spans 15-20 minutes • Chunk your lectures into short blocks of time and incorporate activities to promote active learning #1 – Keep Students Engaged
  6. 6. #2 – Promote Active Learning • Teachers serve as guides • Create opportunities for students to engage new materials • Learning retention improves when students are given opportunities to question, clarify, apply, and consolidate new knowledge.
  7. 7. Why it matters... • Each student marches to the beat of a different drum. • Helps us implement effective teaching strategies that  build on strengths and  address weaknesses #3 – Assess Prior Knowledge
  8. 8. Knowledge Walk: Resumés Sample Method: Assess Prior Knowledge • Uses questioning to introduce new concepts and activate prior learning • Integrates multiple sensory modalities to enhance learning • Provides a snapshot of your students’ collective knowledge

Sample Activities for Course Session Activity #1 - Active Research (15 minutes) So you want to be an Administrative Assistant? • Direct students to the Job Websites Handout on the DACC Career Services web page • Have students search for Administrative Assistant job openings and take notes on the following: Employer name and type of industry, job duties, skills, education, and other requirements

Activity #2 – Cooperative Groups Analyze and Discuss Findings (10 minutes) • Break students into small groups and compare notes • Circle any commonalities such as skills, education, job duties, etc. • Discuss the different types of industries looking to hire Administrative Assistants Sample Activities for Course Session

Activity #3 – Whole Group Discussion (15 minutes) • Each group reports on its findings • Instructor will write a list of common skills and requirements on the board based on group findings • Engage students in discussion by asking questions about their research and findings. • Guide them to make the connection between the job description and tailoring their resume to fit the job description.
