2. The term “sustainability” gets
tossedaroundasifit’sweight-
less. What makes Ecouture
a sustainable fashion show?
Sustainability is more than an
initiative, a practice and an
adjective – it’s a movement
withagoalofawakeningpeo-
plefromanunconsciousigno-
rance to the relationship be-
tween their daily choices and
the world around
them. In this society,
it’s not a matter of
trying to change the
game;it’samatterof
trying to change the
players because the
game depends on
the players. Spread-
ing an idea through
example is underrat-
ed. Every person has
power, every choice
haspowerandevery
day has potential.
The society we live
in revolves around
consumption – of
energy, resources
and materialistic
goods. Fashion often gets the
criticism of promoting this by
encouraging a never-ending
necessary wardrobe update.
Ecouture wants to change
that reputation. Sustainabili-
ty in fashion is not black and
white – it is a gradient of dif-
ferent aspects you can incor-
porate into your purchases.
Whether you strive to sup-
portlocallabels,lookforenvi-
ronmentally friendly produc-
tion methods, get creative
with your old clothes or are a
thrift-master, every conscious
effort counts. Every purchase
acts as a vote towards sus-
tainability as well as a living,
breathing promotion for it.
Choose well, choose con-
sciously,choosesustainability.

And in the next generation.

ionable and fast-paced lives, It’s
Not Cool It’s Weird believes we
can incorporate our old sense of
style with the new, so as to waste
less. Even if it’s not be a trend yet,
the weird will always catch on. You
can maintain your style AND help
the earth.

SCENES 3

sustainably-sourced luxury fabrics
like rayon from bamboo, modal,
sorona and tencel. 95% of the line
is machine wash cold in water, lay

and ageless, and the fabrics don’t
fade, pill or lose their shape. Miik

Their dedication to using natural
material is inspiring and some-
thing we look forward to from
more brands. The future ahead of
us is as we make it. By using out-
side of the box thinking and find-
ing unique techniques we can give
our old habits new life.

FEAT. VENUSWhen planning this show, there
were strong considerations to-
ward straying away from the stig-
matization accompanying sustain-
able fashion. Dressing and living
in an environmentally friendly
way does not mean wearing
only hemp and becoming vegan.
Breaking Barriers is about making
sustainable living a reality with-
out sacrificing trends or price. Our
featured designer Redminded is
a company founded in 2012 that

online or on their Facebook. Foxy
jewellery is a company founded by
two Western University students
supporting locally made goods
and women embracing their fun
and bright side at a great price.
They also have a new recycling
program in place in which you will
receive 15% off for returning used
jewellery to reduce waste and
their effects on the environment.
VENUS is a four-piece
nu-disco outfit from Mon-
treal, Canada. The group
draws from disco, new wave,
and jangle pop to create a
sound that is contemporary
yet nostalgic. Washed out
guitars and bright synths
are complemented by non-
chalant, airy female vocals,
drum machine rhythms,
and disco bass grooves. The
band’s members met at Mc-
Gill University where they
are undergraduates.

7. Montreal. What does this city mean
to you? This vibrant city is glistening
with interconnected communities,
however small they may be, that play
an important role. As communities,
we seek different goals. It is howev-
er the moment that we unify when
all the goals are met. In fact, there
are plenty of individuals around us
that inspire us in our community.
Our designer for this scene, Heart
City Apparel, is an inspiration. Right
from the heart of Montreal, Heart
City Apparel provide opportunities
for the artist and also for the home
of the artist.

FEAT. 2K SQUAD
2KSQUAD is a collective of young pas-
sionate performers (dancers, singers,
musicians, etc.) who strive to take
their talent to the next level. The per-
forming crew puts on an annual show
every year and shows up as guest-per-
formers in various local shows, in
which it strives to fully entertain the
audience. Mother earth’s wellbeing
is essential to the group, so when
ECOUture reached out concerning
their amazing project, they jumped in
without hesitation. We only have one
planet and nature is a crucial source
of inspiration in art and the crew real-
izes this as a fact. With their passions
and hard work, the talented members
all hope to be able to demonstrate
the best sides of 2KSQUAD, as well as
giving a fun stage performance to all
of you! More awareness needs to be
brought to the environment. Let us
not wait for it to be too late before
getting involved!

FEAT. SHYRE
The designers of LUS-
TRE have always been
environmentally mind-
ful of the way we
produce our clothes.
Today, we are show-
casing some of the fin-
est pieces from their
spring collection. Not
only is LUSTRE’s clean
design optimal for
springtime city-wear,
but the gracefulness
also invokes a kind of
soft tranquility – in-
spiring the beauty of
nature in the city.
For the upcoming
Spring season, LUSTRE
aims to demonstrate
that nature-inspired
fashion goes beyond
floral-printed pants
and pastel colour pal-
ettes. If we must bor-
row symbols of nature
in our designs, it is in-
tegral to examine the
impact of our fashion
choices on the very en-
vironment that birthed
our craft.
