GAME RULES AND REGULATIONS
The Playing Fields
The kickball diamond is a square with equal sides of 60 feet or about 20 paces with a base at each corner. The distance
from home plate to second base and from first base to third base is 84 feet 10 1/4 inches or about 28 paces. The distance
between any base and home plate shall be measured from the back corner of each. The pitching strip is in the center of
the diamond, 42 feet 5 1/8 inches or about 14 paces from home plate, and directly aligned with the 1st-3rd base diagonal.
The pitching mound extends 12 feet from the center of the pitching strip. The sidelines are lines 10 feet on the outside of
and parallel to the foul lines, the area between the foul lines and the sidelines is the sideline area. Cones are placed: at the
outside corner of first, second, and third base, and not touching the base; on the foul lines 30 feet or about 10 paces
behind first and third base; and on the sidelines 10' feet from home plate. Any ball touched by a player or Referee wholly
or partly in fair territory is automatically in play. A participant jumping from fair territory is in fair territory while in the
air. A participant jumping from foul territory is in foul territory while in the air.
Dress
Players must properly wear team shirts. Athletic shoes are required. Please dress appropriately for the weather.
Umpire
Only captains can dispute a call. Players, coaches, and fans are expected to show good sportsmanship. No yelling at
umpires, players, or other teams. Ejected participants must leave the field area and may not return to the game.
Player eligibility
All participants must be registered and on the team roster.
Teams/Roster
Teams must field a minimum amount of players to play the game. The maximum team size is 14 players and the
minimum team size is 10 players. There must be an equal number of males and females in the infield and
outfield with the pitcher and catcher of opposite genders. All teams bat the entire roster. All teams must bat
male and female players. Any team playing non-registered or improperly registered players will forfeit their game.

only has eight (8) players, they will play without a catcher and an outfielder.

The kicking order must alternate male/female. Only females can kick back to back.
Players must play the field every other inning at a minimum. Scorekeepers will be pre-determined by the Department of
Recreation and Youth Services. Team composition will be reviewed by the Department of Recreation and Youth
Services prior to game day to insure fairness. There will be 10 players on the field on defense. Each in one of the
following positions:
Pitcher Left Fielder
Catcher Left Center Fielder
1st
Base Right Center Fielder
2nd
Base Right Fielder
3rd
Base
Shortstop
Base coaches
Base coaches will not be utilized.
Regulation game
Games end after five (5) full innings or 50 minutes. One extra inning is played if
the score is tied, and time remains. A winner must be determined for each game.
Community Kickball Tournament Registration Packet 6
Pitching / Catching
A pitch must roll on the ground when passing over the plate. Strike zone is 1 foot inside and outside of home plate.
Bouncing balls are balls. Umpire determines if strike or not. The pitcher must stay behind the pitching strip until the ball
is kicked. Failure to abide by this rule results in a ball. No player may field in front of the pitcher other than the catcher.
Failure to abide by this rule results in a ball. The catcher must field directly behind the kicker and may not cross home
plate nor be positioned forward of the kicker before the ball is kicked. Failure to abide by this rule results in a ball. A
pitch outside the strike zone is a ball. Balls must be pitched by hand.
Kicking
A player’s foot or leg must make all kicks. All kicks must be behind home plate. The kicker may step on home plate to
kick. No bunting is allowed. Umpire determines bunt call. A bunt is called an out.
Running
Runners must stay within the base line. No sliding or running into a fielder. No contact is allowed. The runner is out if
the runner initiates contact or runner is safe if fielder initiates contact. Fielders must stay out of the base line. Runners
hindered by any fielder within the base line, not making an active play for the ball, shall be safe at the base to which they
were running. No leading off or stealing. Runner can only advance after the ball is kicked. A runner off a base when the
ball is kicked is out. Runners may tag-up after a kicked ball is caught by the defense to advance to the next base. Runners
may overrun first base.
One base will be awarded by the umpire on an overthrow into foul territory. This rule is a restriction on the runner,
and not an automatic right for the runner to advance. Running past another runner is not allowed. Any runner passed by
another runner is out.
Strikes
Three (3) strikes is an out. A strike is: a pitch within the strike zone that is not kicked.
An attempted kick missed by the kicker inside or outside of the strike zone. A foul ball is a strike.
Balls
Three (3) balls walk the kicker to first base. A ball is a pitch outside of the strike zone as judged by the umpire where a
kick is not attempted. A ball bouncing is an illegal pitch, resulting in the pitch being called a ball. Any fielder or pitcher
advancing on home plate before the ball is kicked will result in the pitch being called a ball. Any catcher crossing home
plate before the kicker or failing to field behind the kicker will result in the pitch being called a ball.
Foul ball
A foul ball counts as a strike. Three (3) fouls is an out. One foul after having two strikes is an out. A foul is: A kick
landing in foul territory. A kick that goes foul prior to passing third or first base & not touched by a player.
Outs
Three (3) outs by a team complete the team’s half of the inning. Three (3) strikes, three (3) fouls, or fouling with 2 strikes
results in an out. Runner touched by the ball while not on base & the ball is in play. A fielder can throw a ball at a
runner below the shoulders. Runners hit in the neck or head with the ball will not be out unless they were ducking to
dodge the ball…Play stops and the ball is dead after hitting a base runner and being declared out. A kicked ball
(fair or foul) that is caught in the air is an out. A ball thrown to fielder touching base beats the runner who is forced to
run. A runner off of his/her base when the ball is kicked.
Play ends:
When the pitcher has the ball in control and on the mound the play ends. When a runner intentionally touches or stops the
ball (the runner is out) and play ends. Interference is when any non-fielder, runner, or non-permanent object touches the
ball. Any time there is interference, play automatically ends.
Scoring:
There is a 10-run per inning limit for all innings. No slaughter rule. Coaches are encouraged not to run up the score.
