Byrum School of Business at Marian University, Indianapolis
1. BYRUM SCHOOL OF BUSINESS
A NEW LEARNING MODEL
Textbook. Lecture. Exam. This is not how business works, but
is how business is taught at many colleges. To better prepare
students, the Byrum School of Business has adopted a new
learning model. Our students engage in business experiences
by working in teams that interact with business people to
solve relevant problems. Here are some of the experiences
that our students participate in:
• Business Plan Competition – All first-year students are
introduced to business by developing business plans for
on-campus businesses.They participate in a competition
with the winning team receiving funds to operate their
business on campus.
• Internships – All students complete at least one
internship during the semester or summer. The
opportunities are endless considering Marian University
is located 10 minutes from downtown Indianapolis, a
business hub for government, finance, logistics, health
care, law, and life sciences.
• Consulting Engagements – All students earn course
credit as they participate in consulting opportunities for
local companies in the sophomore business experience.
Students partner with businesses to identify and analyze
opportunities, address operating challenges, and
develop competitive advantages.Additional consulting
engagements are available for upperclassmen where
groups are competitively chosen.
• Student-Managed Venture Fund – Local entrepreneurs
pitch business ideas to students who decide which
businesses to fund. Students invest thousands of dollars
each semester in local companies through this innovative
collaboration with the Indianapolis business community.
• Local/National Business Competitions – Students
participate in the National Student Advertising
Competition sponsored by the American Advertising
Federation. Students research an assigned product and
industry, identify problem areas, develop an integrated
communications campaign, and present their proposed
strategy to the client.
• Career Planning – Students attend career development
events in their first year and build resumes and LinkedIn
accounts, participate in mock interviews, and develop
networks in year two. Planning a student’s career begins
on day one and is part of the program in the Byrum School
of Business.
• Study Abroad Opportunities – A global mindset is a
fact of life in today’s business environment. Students are
encouraged to include a study abroad experience as part
of their coursework. Students work individually with their
academic advisor to plan a study abroad experience.A
variety of semester and summer options are available
including: Salzburg,Austria; Harlaxton College in Grantham,
England; Brazil; Rome; and United Arab Emirates.

areas to help them become more marketable. The university’s
size and liberal arts foundation creates opportunities for dynamic
collaboration with other schools and departments across campus to
offer students a cross-disciplinary education. Students from a variety
of majors participate in the Advantage A-Team program, where teams
perform consulting projects with various organizations.
The Byrum School of Business also provides students with a variety
of opportunities for leadership and collaboration by participation in
student-led groups. Student-run organizations include the Business
Club, Entrepreneurship Club, MOMENTUM (student advertising group),
and the Society of Human Resources Management student chapter.
“I leave Marian University equipped with a sense of
servitude, of using my education and what I have
been blessed with to go out and serve others. My
professors always framed my education in light of
sound ethical behavior and compassion for others.
This ‘humanness’ is the true foundation of business
and really of every action we pursue in our lives.”
