Washington State University Washington Rural Pathways to Prosperity Conference Washington State University’s (WSU) Rural Pathways to Prosperity (P2P) is a statewide economic development leadership conference that uses a unique approach to reach rural communities, revive the economy, and strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem. P2P applies the WSU Distributed Conference Model (DCM), which uses technology to connect multiple sites simultaneously to create a groundswell of self-motivated, rural entrepreneurship activity in communities across the state. Only in its second year, this conference has motivated communities to explore co-working spaces, entrepreneur clubs, a collaborative food hub and more, demonstrating WSU Extension’s leadership and convening power for rural economic development. The conference begins with an interactive webinar featuring a national expert who delivers content relevant to all of the geographically dispersed sites. Issues and opportunities introduced by the speaker as well as those identified by regional participants are addressed through well-designed and adaptable activities. On 9 and 10 October, the 2023 Landscape Leadership Workshop was held in Nairobi, Kenya, to set the scene for the GLF Nairobi 2023 Hybrid Conference: A New Vision for Earth. Co-designed by the Global Landscapes Forum (GLF), the Youth in Landscapes Initiative (YIL), and the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN), the workshop brought together 45 brilliant young minds from Africa and around the world selected from over 700 applicants to drive impactful and transformative change. Together, we brainstormed out of the box to find landscape solutions to the climate crisis, biodiversity loss, social injustices and other major challenges. We held hands while sharing our feelings about the world. We harnessed the power of art to challenge dominant narratives. We will forever cherish the memories we made, and we will continue to nourish these new relationships with care.

Syngulon’s technology expands the capacity for selection of microorganisms. The ability to select individual microbes with a behavior of interest is essential, whether for simple cloning at the bench, or for industry-scale production. Synthetic biology uses the concept of “bioengineering” to improve or modify existing genetic systems to create microbes with desired behaviors, and Syngulon uses this approach to develop its selection technologies. This selection technology is based on bacteriocins, ribosomally-produced peptides naturally made by most bacteria to kill competitive microbial species. These bacteriocins can have a limited or wide target range against other microbial species. This technology offers advantageous over antibiotic selection for several reasons: it avoids the use of antibiotics in the first place, helping to reduce the spread of antibiotic resistant microbes. The technology also increases product yield; as bacteriocins are generally smaller peptides, they do not impose a heavy metabolic burden on the producing cell. They can have a wide target specificity, helping to avoid genetic drift. Finally, our system is 100% plasmid-based (e.g. without chromosomal mutations), making it applicable for use in any E. coli strains.
