3. Unbalance (Band 1x)
The presence of high vibration in
Band 1x (Unbalance) - 1x Running Speed
symptom in the radial plane - without any
accompanying high vibration in Band 2x
(Misalignment) or Band 3x (Looseness)
which are called harmonics, is an indica-
tor of out of balance. The presence of the
other harmonics in Bands 2x and 3x
would more likely point to misalignment
or looseness conditions. Always remem-
ber unbalance levels will always be the
highest in the weakest plane (usually in
the horizontal direction).
Misalignment (Band 2x)
Misalignment is a common fault
since it can be difficult to align two shafts
and their bearings properly. The three
main types of shaft misalignment are an-
gular misalignment, offset misalignment,
and combination misalignment. The clas-
sic vibration signature for coupling mis-
alignment is high vibration at Band 1x
(out of balance) and Band 2x (misalign-
ment) in the radial plane. Most times you
will find Band 2x (misalignment) to be
equal to or higher than Band 1x (out of
balance).
Looseness (Band 3x)
Looseness can take many forms in
rotating machinery. A looseness condition
can be created by weakness in the
machine feet or in the structure itself.
Improperly fitted or worn pillow block
bolts or bearing pedestals can manifest
themselves as a looseness condition.
Improper fit between components,
improperly installed couplings, blades,
vanes, etc.) are a form of looseness.
Finally, a bearing turning in its housing or
loose on the journal can sometimes be
detected as a looseness condition. There
are a number of different vibration signa-
tures that constitute looseness, with
emphasis on the fundamental harmonics
of the running speed and sometimes 1/2
and 1/3 harmonics Band .5x (Instability).
Bearing Lube Condition
A bearing lube condition can be triggered
by two situations. One is the presence of
microscopic cracks in the rollers or balls
of the bearing, tiny scratches in the inner
or outer races of the bearing, or some
cracking or slight distortion in the cage
assembly. The second is a momentary
loss of boundary lubrication in the bear-
ing. This loss of the lubrication barrier
between rolling element and raceway
leads to metal-to-metal contact. Bearing
lube conditions can be detected by the
use of (BDU) Bearing Damage Units. If
the bearing is grease lubricated and the
BDU reading is elevated, this may be a
good indicator that greasing the bearing
may be in order. If the bearing is oil-lubri-
cated, and an elevated BDU condition is
persistant, the bearing lubrication system
may not be performing as specified. The
presence of an elevated BDU symptom on
an antifriction bearing may indicate early
bearing wear or a possible lubrication
problem with the bearing.

velocity) as 4 to 20mA signals for connection

• PC Operation – If a laptop/pc is connected via a USB
cable, up to 64 modules can be monitored and the

DataDecypher cloud based service all installed modules
