I was raised in the "shadow" of St. Mary's ‐
actually we were south of it, so not
actually in the shadow, but it was always
there, behind us. Checking it for snow
cover, cloud cover. When I was young the
lookout was "manned" and you could see
the light at night. I am not an athle.c
person but in 1991 one of my best friends
convinced me to climb it with our 2
daughters. That was one of the most
special days in my life.

I grew up in Montana. As a child our family
would walk to my great Aunt in Grantsdale.
We would hear about the warm weather when
we in the Blackfoot Valley were s.ll frozen. We
would come and help Aunt Ger.e in a garden
our valley could never grow. My dad would
talk about how the weather in the BiAer Root
was warmer and kinder than anywhere in
Montana.

Several small volcanoes pushed up aSer the
sapphires slid off the BiAerRoots (see Alts
book). The limestone and sandstone eroded to
fill the BiAer Root Valley and exposed the
peaks, the lapping of 41 inunda.ons rounded
the boAoms of the granite rocks to almost
undermine them.

West of Victor in BiAerroots. I have backpacked
into 80% plus or minus of the lakes and
drainages in the BiAerroots. I just seem to go
there every summer. It is my favorite of all of
them.

trail is also a valuable resource used for hiking
by our family.
