  1. 1. Education about StandardizationEnergy Audits intransportMoving targets Conor Molloy MSc, AEE, CILT, CMVP • A dialogue with Advisor Transport Energy academia and industry www.authentic.ie CEN-CENELEC Management Centre Avenue Marnix 17, 1000
  2. 2. Standard on Energy Audits• Developed under Mandate M/479• Multi-part standard: • EN 16247-1 Energy audits- General requirements already published • Parts 2 (buildings), 3 (processes), 4 (transport) and 5 (qualification of auditors) under development • First read EN 16247-1 Energy audits- General requirements• Part 4 on transport expected to be published by July 2014
  3. 3. Standard on Energy Audits• Transport is very diverse. An audit standard helps us: • Meet customer expectations • Innovate & promote adoption of new solutions• Transport EN16247-4 to date • Relatively little input from the industry • Part 4 (transport) under development • Seeking your input today
  4. 4. SEAI - www.seai.ie Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland • National Energy Authority for Ireland – Includes all energy used by Transport • 3,000+ energy assessments 2007-2013 – 100+ transport fleet energy assessments – Included all major public sector fleets – Average 10% saving within 3 months • Obligated parties (fuel suppliers) engaged via REIL www.reil.ie since mid-2012
  5. 5. Transport Energy Management (TEM) Benefits of TEM to a fleet, from audit to ISO50001 • 2007 Energy Assessment 35L/100km • 2008 EnergyMAP training 33L/100km • 2010 Energy Award 30L/100km • 2011 OBD telematics 29L/100km • 2012 Energy Award ECOdrive 26L/100km • 2013 ISO50001 - EnPI @ 20gCO2e/pax/Km
  6. 6. Transport Energy Audit General Energy audit but: Vehicles move • Road vehicles move 1-22 hours per day • Ships put into port for limited periods • Passenger (bus/train/tram) go back to depot each night • Refuelling at multiple locations • When vehicle leaves base it is invisible • Drivers will leave early to avoid you!
  7. 7. Operation Each vehicle & its operator are different • Captain of ship • Train driver • Delivery driver • Passenger driver • Service Engineer driver • Most vehicles are significant energy users - analyse energy use by vehicle • By individual driver across vehicles
  8. 8. Audit - analysis Meter = refuelling pump • Forecourt fuel pumps regularly checked – On-site pumps need to be checked for accuracy, look for label  • EV chargers not always metered • Ships may need a flow meter • e.g. fishing vessels • Trains may need a fuel/electricity meter • Go out with stopwatch & clip board
  9. 9. Independent variables Many variables are not controllable • Weather e.g. rain, snow • Wind direction & strength • Sea state, wave heights • Leaves on tracks • Traffic congestion • Passenger numbers • Customer action / inaction • Customer load weight
  10. 10. Summary Used effectively, Transport Energy Audits: • Reduce costs • Reduce emissions • Increase profit • Improve competitiveness • Securing jobs
  11. 11. Education about StandardizationThank youMerciDankeGracias Conor Molloy MSc, AEE, CILT, CMVP • A 87 255 4070 +353dialogue with academia and industry conorm@authentic.ie CEN-CENELEC Management Centre Avenue Marnix 17, 1000
