1. Birmingham International Airport Case Study
Reducing Energy
Birmingham International
Airport (BHX) lies to the
southeast of Birmingham city
centre. The airport sees over
9 million passengers a year
and has plans to double
capacity by 2020.
The airport is a base for Flybe,
Monarch, Ryanair, Thomas Cook
Airlines and Thomson Airways and
offers both domestic flights within
the UK, and international flights to
destinations in Europe, the Middle
East, Pakistan, India, North America
and the Caribbean.
The airport handles scheduled and
charter short and long-haul flights.
Birmingham is the first UK airport
outside of London to offer direct
charter flights to China, made possible
by an extension of the runway.
Key Objectives for Birmingham
International Airport
LCMB were instructed by Birmingham Airport,
in May 2013, to deliver energy management services
in partnership with the internal engineering and
operations team. This service was designed to bring
about a step change in the way that energy and the
associated cost and emissions were managed. Energy
is particularly important at Birmingham Airport as it is
their largest controllable cost.
LCMB were asked to focus on meeting the following key
client objectives:
• Improving the level of sub-metering and data visibility.
• Develop a wider accountability for energy by business
unit level reporting and assigning energy budgets to
manage and reduce.
• Engage staff in taking an active role to save and
promote energy saving.
• Identifying and costing projects to yield energy savings.
LCMB are working
with our teams at
all levels to deliver
a transformation in
energy management
which will secure
lasting cost and
carbon reductions
for the airport.
As an airport with
ambitious growth
plans it is vital that
we both understand
and continually find
ways to reduce what
is one of our largest
controllable costs.”

2. Our approach
LCMB set about developing a greater understanding
of where energy was used within Birmingham Airport.
Once understood this led to us being able to establish
targets for each business unit.
Our initial work involved the
development of a metering strategy
and specification from which LCMB led
a planned approach to identify and
tender 150 electricity sub-meters.
To put energy on the agenda of
management staff, LCMB set up a
monthly energy group. Along with
regular monthly energy reports provided
to business unit leaders this has had the
effect of improving awareness as well
as accountability.
Joint actions across the airport were
successful in leading to an energy saving
in the first year of our involvement of
£85,000.
We have now put in place the reporting
structures enabling the establishment
of a 5% energy saving target to be
achieved over the course of the
coming year.
Key Outcomes delivered for BHX
• A metering strategy and programme of electrical
sub-metering to expand the Birmingham Airports
understanding of significant energy consumers.
• Increased accountability for energy within each
business unit and in excess of £85k of energy cost
being saved within the financial year.
• Staff engagement in suggesting and
implementing energy saving ideas.
• A number of energy saving projects
implemented, under trial or identified.
• A regular energy cost saving reporting process
for each business unit.
• The basis for devolved energy saving targets
for 2014/15.
Following a successful year of delivering these
benefits, LCMB have been commissioned to extend
our service for Birmingham Airport in order to
secure long term savings.
