I’m very excited to join Curtis today and host our last big webinar event of the year – looking at 2015 in review and 2016 looking forward. Curtis and I had a lot of fun sitting down to brainstorm on this topic – so I appreciate the opportunity to talk with you today.
We have a large crowd today – 288 was the last registration count I saw. That’s a large webinar crowd. So facilities professionals from all over the country. We must have struck a chord.
Vast ecosystem - 15.7 Million Wos, 2.8 Million Incidents, 6.5 million events, $1.5B energy managed
There has to be a clear ROI for outsourcing maintenance…and depending on the situation at a school, it may or may not be beneficial. An article that DA published recently profiles a few schools. One, a small school in AZ, where jobs can be filled by locals easily, outsourcing those positions was unthinkable. In an urban district north of Chicago, it made more sense to outsource. Almost all schools I work with talk about some valued partnerships with some vendors. But it seems like less schools are outsourcing routine maintenance.
We refreshed the Community use of schools whitepaper. Findings…
2 years ago we thought social media would solve everything – from our news intake to product support to marketing. Reality is setting in, and the surprising trend shows twitter is on the decline. Are they representative of all social media? Maybe not. While social media is a great tool, it’s power to influence has flattened out. Each tool is like a voice, but they’re all talking at the same time.
CrisisManager mobile app is customizable and offers one-tap emergency calling, building schematics, emergency exits and lockdown locations relevant to the various schools in the district.
In January of 2015, CrisisManager was named a best higher ed product by highered techdecisions.
In May we were excited to announce that CrisisManager won the coveted SIIA 2015 CODiE Award for Best Postsecondary Enterprise Solution. One of 28 CODiE Award winners in the education technology category, we are thrilled to be recognized for our team’s strong work with schools across the country.
Stonington Public Schools, St Charles Parish Public Schools, NW Missouri State University, and Houston County Schools have all been in the news for their deployment of CM.
Another trend we saw was the concern about getting the capital planning process integrated with day to day operations. When I went onsite to Horry County Schools…
Beautiful venues – re-energized and excited with new ideas. Featured Campus Champions in Myrtle Beach. Thurl Bailey did one of the best keynotes I’ve ever seen. As always, a good party.
Ok, it’s official, cloud computing is here to stay. When we first starting in 2001, we had to educate the market on the cloud…and there was a lot of skepticism. Now the paradigm has shifted. Now everything is on the cloud – icloud, Office 365 – Microsoft cloud shift…Google, Amazon, Microsoft all playing in the cloud. When I received adobe premiere – it was through a cloud service. This allows for new and exciting innovations, integrations, and also plays into Big Data.
Business Insider recently defined IoT as: A network or internet connected objects able to collect and exchange data. To some that may inspire ideas of an interconnected home ideas of the Jetsons.
In another article, SaS asked: Is the Internet of Things just a far-fetched consumer fantasy that promises the convenience of connected appliances and smart running shoes?
What’s not debated is the impact of smart devices and IoT. It’s been called the next Industrial Revolution — it will change the way all businesses, governments, and consumers interact with the physical world.

Just reading an article on Professional Development from a linkedIn source… PD is more important than every and leaders are looking for cost effective ways to do PD. LMS is one of those ways.
A DA story 2 weeks ago talked about a Texas superintendent gives 1,100 teachers—and 1,000 other employees—$500 each to pick their own PD
Curtis Orndorff with Frederick County PS is doing a session on the PD process they put their staff through.
Also, product certification…In a market survey conducted earlier this year, clients placed a very high value on becoming SchoolDude - product certified.
We’ve had a few speaker submissions for SDU on this topic. Convergence between IT and Maintenance it closer than ever before.
No more anecdotal/hunches
Expectation is to have data quickly and get actionable insight
See your accomplishments over time
Protect your team and promote their hard work
Make a compelling case for more resources
John Dufay with APS did a great session at SDU west, called, “Using your Data”.
Actionable insight - Equipment is running at night when schools are unoccupied.
– 2 Chillers running with 50% of their compressors enabled with actual readings
This IDR Comparison of the last week of school to the week after school is out shows a 55.5% reduction in Peak Demand across our largest schools. So it helped John balance out summer school attendance at certain sites – removing ineffiecient openings for a small number of students.
National, regional, and internal comparisons with KPIs and benchmarks provide context and help you set clear standards and goals.
Keep in mind, context is important!! Doctor making diagnosis on one KPI analogy.
Data is overwhelming and we hear all about it, but we all have to be able to sift through what's going on around us to make smart decisions. We're all data scientists.“
Data is being created at an alarming rate. 90% of the worlds data has been created in the last 2 years alone.
Instead of gigabytes, we talk terabytes or petabytes now. AT&T transfers approximately 20 petabytes of data through its network every day. – that’s about 200K hours of standard definition TV.
Then you have exabytes and zettabytes. To get an idea of the scale of a zettabyte, a byte of data is one grain of rice, a megabyte is 8 bags of rice, a terabyte is 2 container ships, a petabyte covers Manhattan, and a zettabyte fills the pacific ocean.
Our kids will need data science skills to navigate the world going forward.
In a market survey earlier this year, we asked, Who do you trust to give advice? Think about in your personal life…who doesn’t read product reviews to help make decisions? Social Media changed this and made it easier to connect.
Communities are becoming the go to resource for best practices and solution optimization. In our community, Campus Champions share their best practices.
