3. Joint Modernization Command Forge the Future
MSSPIX 2021
Solutions/Technology Focus Areas
• Assess potential material and non-material opportunities to better enable
Maneuver Support and Protection contributions to Multi Domain
Operations (MDO) Capable Army by 2028:
• Better mitigate the effects of hazards, obstacles and gaps on forces executing
MSO; areas of specific interest include:
• Complex obstacle reduction, gap crossing, Chemical Biological,
Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) hazard identification, reporting and de-
contamination.
• Better shape the operating environment to enable MDO by influencing
adversarial forces and local populations; areas of specific interest include:
• Terrain shaping obstacles (block, turn, fix), area denial capabilities.
• Provide enhanced operational protection and security capabilities to MDO
forces; areas of specific interest include:
• Mobile security, improved protective platforms, structures and materials,
Threat detection.
• Better enable MDO forces to understand the operational environment;
areas of specific interest include:
• Geospatial mapping (surface, sub-surface, interior), terrain and infrastructure
assessment, mobility assessment, threat assessment.
• Assess potential application of robotic/ autonomous systems and artificial
intelligence to better enable Maneuver Support, Sustainment and Protection
contributions to MDO Capable Army by 2028.
• Assess the validity of reasonably mature Operational and Organizational
(O&O) Concepts that enable MDO Capable and Ready force development for
Maneuver Support, Sustainment and Protection formations.
• Autonomous Resupply to forward, widely dispersed units while minimizing
Soldier risk and increasing our ability to provide materials forward to extend
operational reach and prolong endurance.
• Unmanned aerial cargo systems, unmanned ground cargo systems,
unmanned marine cargo systems, autonomous resupply platforms,
autonomous material handling equipment.
• Alternate Sources of Water that improves our ability to supply water, reduces
our storage requirements, and/or meets the demand at the point of need to
extend operational endurance.
• Water from air, grey water reuse, man-portable water purification systems,
waste water treatment, water quality monitoring.
• Produce Materials at the point of need, while improving reliability, reducing
transportation requirements, and/or improving order fulfillment.
• Additive manufacturing (Repair and replacement parts), polymer 3D printing,
metal deposition, cold spray.
• Provide a source of power that reduces demand, improves access, and/or
reduces our logistical footprint to extend operational reach and prolong
endurance.
• Micro-grid technologies, microwave, laser and wireless power distribution,
electrochemical (solid oxide fuel cells), small modular nuclear power,
hydrogen powered vehicles/equipment; hydrogen at the point of need, hybrid-
electric.
• Improve data sharing and asset visibility to achieve total asset visibility that
can be used to access, anticipate and resolve sustainment and maintenance
requirements.
• Hand-held, helmet, and platform mounted network access devices, predictive
analytics/artificial Intelligence, machine learning, data mining, near-real/real
time personnel asset visibility (PAV).
