2. The NBTS Oligo Research Fund
An insurance professional based in Wilkes-Barre, PA, Daniel (“Dan”) Hohal has
experience working with workers’ compensation and auto insurance claims. Beyond his
professional endeavors, Daniel Hohal supports the National Brain Tumor Society (NBTS),
which operates community research fund programs, including the Oligo Research Fund.
3. The NBTS Oligo Research Fund
Established in June 2011 with the help of numerous families, including Zach and Spencer
Greene, who were diagnosed with oligodendroglioma brain tumors within two years of
each other, the Oligo Research Fund had an initial target of $300,000. Since then, it has
received over $1.97 million of its donation goal of $3 million.
4. The NBTS Oligo Research Fund
Oligodendroglioma brain tumors are diagnosed in approximately 1,150 patients annually
in the United States. This comparative rarity - over 69,000 people are diagnosed with
brain tumors in the U.S. every year - can make it difficult to study the tumors with the
collection of adequately sized study groups often causing issues. In fact, according to the
NBTS, there have been no new treatments developed in over 20 years.
5. The NBTS Oligo Research Fund
The Oligo Research Fund counters this by funding research programs, such as Stanford
University School of Medicine’s Anti-CD47 Based Multimodality Immunotherapy Against
Malignant Oligodendroglioma study, which aimed to develop a new anti-CD47
immunotherapy treatment for the condition.
