Thomas Bertani - Thanks to the blockchain a new kind of apps flourished. Those "dapps" (decentralized apps) are implemented via smart contracts built on the top of the networks like Bitcoin or Ethereum. Since dapps run in their own walled garden they cannot fetch any external data directly and this is where data providers (or oracles) come into the game. Bringing data to the blockchain infrastructure is complex as the need of reliability is key, once this is sorted out tons of new useful apps can be implemented. Oraclize is the leading oracle service and is disrupting the way data can be leveraged.
