When we take a closer look at the BI of today, we see that the lack of alignment between business and the business intelligence environment creates a series of challenges. The first is the non-trivial challenge of keeping up with changes in the enterprise – changes in business needs from the BI environment, changes in the source systems and data movement paths, and changes in technology available to us to facilitate better service. The second challenge comes from the constant need to provide accurate, trustworthy results. Data quality is more than ensuring feeds are working correctly, it involves the need to properly interpret the data, provide meaning and context, to ensure it depicts the right intention so in the final report, conveys the right actionable information, or knowledge, to the enterprise. Third, we have the pressing need to expand the value of business intelligence beyond the workgroup, to decouple the silos of business intelligence and embrace the whole enterprise. The alignment of BI to enterprise architecture is fundamentally what will provide whole business integration, more than alignment to business BI strategy but alignment to the whole corporate strategy. Fourth, we have the ongoing challenge of conveying BI value to the business as a whole. Investments made in BI in terms of people, equipment, software, services, training and more must pay off at a level commensurate with the investment and if the value cannot be properly measured, understood in business terms, BI projects can become marginalized – to the detriment of the enterprise.

This session is a walk through on new capabilities of PowerDesigner v16.0. We will introduce the new capabilities that all types of users will benefit from. Then we discuss the capabilities that benefit information architecture and enterprise architecture users. We will also demonstrate what we have done to improve data modeling, where we have always had leading innovation and capabilities, and finally, we will talk about things we have done for Sybase IQ users to streamline implementation of IQ based analytics environments.
First thing we have done, and the most visible, in PowerDesigner V16 is develop the new user interface. This new shell, this new framework for the modeling tool itself, comes with the new windows 7 look and feel. This is a natural evolution of the ease of use for PowerDesigner. We have added new capabilities to make it easier to for new users to quickly used to the tool and improve productivity for all users alike. First, the new tabbed multi-document interface allows use you get to any document you want, rip off, tab back, and really see side by side the models you need, and take full advantage of your display. The new toolboxes allow for easier access to all tools, making available the right tools at the right time, while still allowing users to maximize screen real estate. IN light of ease of use, we have seen that different types of users have different capabilities they want to access regularly – and for this we introduce the role based interface. When you configure a UI profile, you select what tools to make available and what order they appear in, for menus, toolbars, toolboxes, dialog boxes, and more. You create the right user interface experience for each user group. for how they personally will use the tool. Everything you need and nothing you don’t. This helps non-technical users understand the environment better, helps extend reach from power users to new users, from technical users to business users alike. You can create a truly unique experience for each user.
For a more modern look and feel – there are new symbols and drawing capabilities available. Being able to edit the sub-objects, for example, the attributes of a CDM entity, columns of a PDM table, methods of a UML class, and more, can now be done directly through the diagram and not only through a dialog box. We can also now add more things on the symbol: essentially any piece of metadata can be added to the object’s symbol. But, this can create very busy, and odd shaped, symbols. With the new layout features, you can balance the placement of the extra metadata to stop creating odd shaped, very tall symbols and balance that out with side-by-side layouts. This increases the readability, but to reduce the verbosity of the symbols, we now support icons based on values from metadata – allowing users to show key values without the text, just a more compact, and more visually appealing, icon. Finally – adding line bridges and auto-routing make readability better for the connectors between symbols in any diagram. The bridges make it easy to follow lines that overlap, but do not “intersect” making it easy to follow the meaning, and auto-routing make sure line placement is handled in a logical way, and not a daunting task for the modeler to play with the lines to get it right.
For architecture, Information Architecture and Enterprise Architecture, (and Data Modelers with the Repository Edition), we add the new Enterprise Glossary. The Glossary feature allows for the definition of a business term its own representation. We have a category of business terms, a hierarchy of categories, related terms and synonyms, and this gives us a single source to define the core business language for the enterprise. As we define our enterprise, sites, organization units, entities, classes, etc. we can define them based on a common business term and link them to a common meaning and understanding. This gives us traceability, “Where is customer concept used in all models?”. We can use the glossary to drive naming conventions –and ensure compliance. Names will convert name to code, auto-complete allows users fast access to the right name for the artifact, and makes sure we are aligned, save time in “getting it right”, provide a layer of governance and standards compliance and more.
Repository based impact analysis allows us to really reach beyond the local workspace and really see the impact of change across the enterprise. Especially when we are dealing with multiple layers of abstraction (CDM, LDM and PDM) or reaching across all architecture viewpoints: we discover more and more the interdependencies are not what we see locally see from our work but what we see globally across all work done by all modelers and architects. This new feature allows the repository links to be considered directly by the impact analysis feature. It is not just, “Show me the impact within my work”, but extend this out to everyone’s work, and “Show me how this thing in my model impacts business models, data implementation models, application models and more”, and not need to remember to take all those models and check them out locally to consider the impact.
In supporting our need to share metadata with our collaborators, many who are non-modelers, we introduced the PowerDesigner Web Portal. This allowed users to access all metadata, and this is great if you know what you are looking for, but if you cannot easily browse, you want to search. We have added a more user friendly search capability to make it easier for non-technical users to find what they are looking for quickly. With quick search, key metadata searches can be done fast without configuring a search query. It is like pre-defined queries in the repository – so users can more easily use the most common search criteria without learning any complex methods. Faster, easier search increases reuse, standards compliance, sharing and understanding. However, we can now also ask, “Given this thing I have found, what is it linked to?” The new, Portal-based Impact Analysis feature allows us to review the found item in full context without leaving the portal or checking out a single model. All collaborators now have an easy way to find anything, see it in full context and have full understanding taking all metadata available to the enterprise into account, all from the comfort of an easy to use browser interface.
BUT – what if we find something we want to correct or compliment, complete or otherwise edit? In Version 16, we introduce the new Portal Composer. The Portal Composer allows us to change the comment, description and annotation and allows us to solicit a richer and more direct feedback from the non-modelers in the community. This capability allows extension of collaboration outside the modeler and architecture teams, allow all properly authorized users to make changes directly, with notifications, to any object they are responsible for contributing to the definitions for.
We have continued to improve the Physical Data Model and to do that, we make sure we have the latest support for the latest capabilities of the most popular databases . We add support for any new databases, new versions of databases including new open source databases, and more. Also, naturally, the best way to model Sybase databases is by using Sybase PowerDesigner. We aim for full round-trip engineering of all database physical objects including security model, XML and web services in the databases, physical storages and more.
Sybase IQ users can benefit from the merger of EA and PDM with the Reference Architecture Advisor. With a fully configurable series of hardware profiles, and metadata from the IQ physical model, you can configure a reference architecture and balance speed vs. cost, creating multiple reference architectures to compare and understand the ideal configuration based on business needs, technical parameters and available hardware systems.
There are a few other things we have done that can make a considerable difference in how you use the tool. The library models are reference models that will be automatically synced to allow for a real reuse that remains in lock step with the common standard.Link and Sync technology has also been improved to make it easier to manage, understand and navigate the links between models that make PowerDesigner so unique. First is shortcuts, we allow for a “full content shortcut”: shortcuts that make the metadata available without dependency on the target models. Extended and Traceability links are merged into one traceability concept, with the ability to type the link, so you can now group types of connections, and they are all represented using the same core concept, “Traceability”. PowerDesigner is also revisioned to support the latest environments including the latest Microsoft Office tools (for import, export, reporting, etc) and the latest operating environments available including Visual Studio, Eclipse and Windows.
