  2. Approached about a project by Meldon Jenkin-Jones and Dr Kahlil Ali, BMER based on the work of Dr Alfred Tatum, The idea was to encourage Young African American to read texts that would create a positive image
  3. Dr. Tautm’s work was to be incorporated with various community partners activities and works identified by Dr. Alfred Tatum to create valuable influence s on children readers to create better self images. The question was how to engage these kids and help them spread the word of their achievements My immediate thought was of some way for the kids to be recognized by their peers for their work, knowing that young men were highly influenced by social perceptions, if they could advertise their achievements, it may help them take pride in what otherwise would be considered top down pressure by adults.

  7. We were dealing with children and a population that may not have had internet access but I thought if we could somehow incorporate a realistic avatar, that was recognizable we could have a leader board. We could chose an Avatar generator and let the kids create a handle or username with an image that was if not totally realistic, similar to them and how they see themselves.
  8. That way we could use a Leader Board to advertise the children’s s success… without actually identifying them or collecting information on them… the point could be awarded to the Avatar and the Handle or User, not the Children themselves. The Leaderboard would be a good Idea I thought for boys and encourage competition. Would lead them status and move them from an extrinsic motivator to an intrinsic one. They would look to partake in enabling activities and to compete with others and also it would call attention to the program.
  9. Then when we had the BMER kickoff Dr. Tatum talked about his literature heritage. Which Made me realize, that there were levels to self identification that came from the works themselves. The opportunity for Teens to make self creative statements beyond the Avatars….
  10. During this time I was also working on a program for lack of a better word to get kids involved with the library. Not the normal age group we had, but an older group. The value of Games as educational tools is a vary rapidly expanding field… much work has been done in the area of video games as learning tools, but mostly in the area of STEM skills… I originally took that approach with a slightly different agenda…
  11. I started with a simple idea of taking the downstairs computing lab to give kids a chance to interact with each other….. I had a four hour session twice a month. I wanted the kids to play in a shared games space ala Mine craft to be interacting on the computers, like they normally would, and to move into actual social interaction.
  12. This is our computer Lab Normally… I spent roughly $30 to 40 on a few lights and….
  13. I actually got quite a few kids there… the most importantly was a young man who was brought by his mother… she said “ I worry about him being home alone all the time, I want him to actually be around other people for a change… “ As he was reluctant to come the first time, he has now brought many friends and actually takes a bus for an hour ride to get there for all our events…. A fellow Librarian put it best when he said, often getting kids to the library was about as exciting as saying, lets go spend the afternoon at the DMV…” A few simple lights changed the idea of the institution for these kids…
  14. Introducing a forced break for snacks and talk and group decision on which games to play next forced them actually come to consensus about things and talk… for a long time we called each other by our handles, FatAliedB, Nightwolf, and mine Oldman. I eventually let them name their own program, gave them control, have pursued their recommendations for games… they have become friends on STEAM, and although they are from separate neighborhoods, have friendships built around the gaming program.
  15. We still play a decent amount of a Minecraft like games, but we have also moved into working on HTML classes and playing games like Kerble Space program where you build an actual rocketship…and try and launch it into orbit, so far the results have been mixed in concern to our plans to get to space, but the kids are learning a decent amount of STEM skills, and a decent amount about digital literacy, like how to set an IP address for LANs, and how to load and install games, how to zip and unzip files.
  16. The most interesting part of this though is moving to them to co-operative play versus competitive play… a large part of my efforts here are looking into a game called Artemis Space Ship simulators… it literally takes at least four people to control the ship, each with assigned roles, each having to follow the orders of the captain…
  17. My long range plan for this model of play is to start a version of Sim City, somewhat informed by a game called democracy, that would again be one games with each play having an assigned role… but instead of combat being oriented toward running a city, basically a lesson in civics and social planning…
  18. So currently in Richmond we have the same problems many urban and rural cities have. How do we teach kids usable skills. Yes there is college and preparing teens for school is important, but there are also so many other vocational skills, and soft skills like communication to be learned. My Branch manager wanted to develop a database of all the cities programs that taught any applicable skills to serve as a resource. While looking into this I thought here is the perfect opportunity to really try gameification… not just the Badge Leaderboards and Point, but a really integrated Design.
  19. So here is where we really start talking about Gamefication, first thing to understand is it not just games. As I tried to show with my gaming program these tools can be used to develop skill beyond the actual mechanics of games. We can use the language “if you will” of games to engage people in real world activities.
  20. Gamefication is a growing field one that is a “hot Topic” right now. Badges Points and Leaderboard ( or BPL) make for a great feedback for activities people have done, and an almost immediate feedback. But we need to understand that just using Badge this is not really gamefication.
  21. Gold Star and Grade are really just non digital badges, stuff schools have used for year. Moving from 2nd to 3rd, to 4th etc…. Is in a way leveling up. The problem with these systems is that not all students embrace the system or move from extrinsic rewards, ie good grades, to Intrinsic rewards, ie love of learning and reading… something I would hope this audience has done since we are all sitting here with MLS’s
  22. IN the Past 40 years Game Designers have become increasing sophisticated and have spent a lot of time and money developing new ways to motivate people to keep playing games. In reality games have proven to be a great lab experiment on willing subjects who actually pay to be studied. No real number exists for how many games have been released, but a conservative estimate is over 200,000, who knows how many million of players that has been, and market forces proving the success of good design.
  23. A well designed Gameification system must meet all of the four player types, these were introduced as concepts by the English Professor Richard Bartle, when he looked at Multi Player Games. To just use BPL will only address the needs of the first two types of users, Killers and Achievers. These are traditionally how we view games, as competitive sport. As one of my fellow MLS students stated when I started talking about games in libraries “ I don’t want a bunch of noisy boys in my library”… as ana aside, I have been killed by many competent females who fall directly in the Killer type… but more importantly male or female there is also social aspects to games that must be addressed, and these have perhaps the more interesting applications in creating commmunity, and being a reinforcemnt tool for Gmaeification.
  24. Martin Segelman bring another concept to this too. If we have social engagement, can we perhaps reinforce, positive social engagement. A Game like World of Warcraft, makes it necessary for teamwork and collaboration to unlock all of it’s abilities. The killer and Achiever need to interact socially to achieve their goals. In a sense, they are forced to be a different kind of player until they accept these conditions as necessary to become the kind of player they are naturally inclined to be. Finally there are two last key concepts to Gameficiation…
  25. Flow, or to be in the moment, present, in the zone, on a roll, wired in, in the groove, on fire, in tune, centered, singularly focused, or going beast mode. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi wrote a book called “Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience” in which he pointed out that people are happiest when they are increasingly challenged by their abilities… so any Gameficiation system must get harder, but in a manner that isnot beyond the skills that a player has grown. And the Final One….
  26. If we keep returns in direct correlation then we have a diminishing return, if you must do task a to get badge a, folled by task b to get badge B, and so on to badge Z. You will lose your audience. The secret is to leave them options. The esscence to Explore. Games have long been filled with what is in game language, Easter Eggs, attack a wall find a hidden room, in that room is a prize, sometimes not even useful to the game, but a prize none the less… Easter Eggs have been around at least since Mario Brothers, probably longer. Why would the player attack the wall, in the narrative of the story there would be no reason, but that action of exploring, or just trying it for the fun of it, is what makes it interesting. Case in Point, the Game Doom had a rocket launcher in it…someonce once shot it at his own feet while jumping and discovered once of the greatest moves in the game, they learned to Super Jump over obstacles. Soon it was THE rage, by logic, in real life, you would be smarter than to shoot a rocket launcher at your feet, but this in a game, you can expierment, there needs to be rewards for trying something new…Now I can’t incorporate a rocket launcher in a Gamefied system for Library community engagment, but I can encourage exploration… freedom of motion, and self expression, all the while giving a competetive framework to increase challenges..or at least I hope so… here is design for that system….
  27. SO What is the motivation for the Kids to Play, where is the FUN? Well the kids will get to create a version of their city… Partially this will be done through a map, and partially through their “Page” like FB.
  28. The Intro Concept is not to Reward at first, the rewards come later. The Kids who have access to this will be mostly member, and get to brag a little about whet they did at the library. Th einteresesting part will be the ability to share that info, and our organizational tree, that will suggest more things to do.
  29. We will use avatars and aliases or handles or Logon’s whatever you need to call them to portray the Children. Since the majority will be Library members we can use their Library card for a default password. In this way the process we use for every normal parental permission should be in play and at the same time, we don not give away or collect any specific information about them.
  30. Activities will get badges in the Categories they fill annd wew will also allow the player to “Level UP In a Category” as they do more associated points in THAT category….
  31. Activities will get badges in the Categories they fill annd wew will also allow the player to “Level UP In a Category” as they do more associated points in THAT category…. So You will have a Level of sorts…. The More you do in a Category the Hotter your badge will be..
  32. Activities will get badges in the Categories they fill annd wew will also allow the player to “Level UP In a Category” as they do more associated points in THAT category…. So You will have a Level of sorts….
  33. Activities will get badges in the Categories they fill and we will also allow the player to “Level UP In a Category” as they do more associated points in THAT category…. So You will have a Level of sorts….
  34. Activities will get badges in the Categories they fill annd wew will also allow the player to “Level UP In a Category” as they do more associated points in THAT category…. So You will have a Level of sorts…. However each activity will also have a sub Category….
  35. So Teen Lego Club would be worth More for STEM skills, but also some for Team Building and Functional Arts… for instance…
  36. Also there will be one off badges, for events not at the Library in organizations that teach valuable skills. There is a Theatre Called Center Stage, we will give special badges for their workshops in Video Production. They set up TV station in the schools and have editing facilities in their theatre. We have approached such organizations and are attempting to get buy in from them, for purposes cross promoting the offering of opportunities.
  37. Skills Free Motion- Richmond Mastery Start with things they are already doing and use the structure to open up new options for them that exisit outside of their organization or framework Provide them with a Framework that promises them to be AN authority on Richmond… My City Story/My Lineage.. Mechanics are real world activities
  38. After a certain Point the system will get old, no matter how well designed… by introducing the ability to surprise gift badges and make social groups and gifting badges, we hope to keep engagement high. By using the points as a Game Currency, we hope that there will be no build up of points, that people with the most badges will be interested in interacting and accepting new members in their group.
  39. There was a classic mamagment study done, called the Westinghouse study, they changed the level of lighting in a room to find out what was optimal for their workers, they would brighten the light, and for awhile work would go up, hten it would slack down, and they would try dimming the light, and it would go up again… what they ended up finding out is that the level of light didn’t matter to the workers as much as the fact management was continuing to try and make things better for them..
  40. Look at World of Warcraft, thy have been running a n MMORPG for over 10 years, in no small part their success is the the fact they constatntly listen to their userbase, and make frequent changes, No gmefied system will last if we do NOT listen to the people participating, and more importantly continue to change, We plan on letting the users not just gift badges, but help create them, gift special ones for behaviors they feel are worthwhile. Also we need to give tangible or useful returns, otherwise, it is not Gamefication…just a Game
  41. Another facet of this is to use the linked In Model, after awhile the teens should have developed several real skills, soft and hard, that would be useful to an employer. We want to use the Link’D in Model to allow Community Partners and outside Organizations, recommend or rate the teen on their profile… Now the Danger of this is the that Link’d In has users that make it hard to judge a standard… Taxonomy Story, so the Badge and skill system will be moderating by the library, after all, the Libraries job is to vet information, in terms of relevancy, so this in some ways is just another facet of our work. SO How are we going to do this….
  42. We Plan on using a Content management system… specifically Joomla, although there is no reason why we could not add another… the ability to let people add their own content to a page, in association with Social Sharing and the fact that it is in for all intents and purposes already a Database, makes a CMS ideal. For the specific needs of the Badges having multiple categories, Joomla has another nice feature.
  43. The K@ plugin will allow you to associate a single article in this case an activity or a badge, or user, with MULTIPLE categories, and you can set the page to display those related fields… this may be available in some of the other CMS’s like Wordpress or Drupal, but Joomla is what we have been Working withand the K2 mad e the Immdediate Connection
