  20. 20. Delft3D FM Suite 1D2D January 2022 we released the first General Availability (GA) release of Delft3D FM Suite 1D2D for the Dutch market. Available as a beta release for international applications. The 1D model input has many similarities to the SOBEK representation of networks as branches and connection nodes. The computational back end is now D-Flow Flexible Mesh, same as for 2D3D, so this greatly improves: • 1D2D coupling possibilities • Support for much larger models • Faster calculations Beta testers can also use the Delft3D FM Suite 1D2D abroad, please contact us for usage hints. (We are still expanding course material, to prepare for an international GA release too.) Upcoming Delft3D FM Suite 2023.01 20
  21. 21. Modules in Delft3D FM Suite 1D2D • D-Flow FM: 1D + 2D hydrodynamics • D-Hydrology for lumped rainfall-runoff modelling • D-Real Time Control for realtime triggering / operating of hydraulic structures Upcoming Delft3D FM Suite 2023.01 21
  22. 22. Delft3D FM Suite 1D2D Real-world application models Upcoming Delft3D FM Suite 2023.01 22
  23. 23. SOBEK comparison Limburg: discharge wave Roer 2019 Example of model validation in Limburg. Orange: inundation in simulation, not in real event Magenta: Inundation in real event, not in simulation. Blue: inundation in both. Based on aerial pictures Delft3D FM 1D2D much better than SOBEK 2 results. Upcoming Delft3D FM Suite 2023.01 23 Delft3D FM 1D2D Delft3D FM 1D2D Delft3D FM 1D2D
  24. 24. 2D3D modelling Excluded “Singularity” (see earlier presentation today by Adri Mourits)
  25. 25. Improved robustness sed+mor Improved robustness for 2D sediment modelling: • Crashes in 2D real-life models with sediments for releases from 2021.04 till 2022.04 • Now solved in 2023.01 release Update of Delft3D FM release for courses: • Delft3D FM courses still use release 2021.03, because of this robustness problem. • With this new 2023.01 release, these courses will now finally be upgraded to this new version soon! 25 FLOW-MOR-WAVE course model
  26. 26. News from D-Water Quality Water Quality modelling • New approach for algae modelling (PROTIST), considering mixotrophic algae and protozoans. • Particle modelling Delft3D-PART functionality for unstructured grids (D-Flow FM) with updated GUI (beta functionality) 26 Particle tracks in Hong Kong area particles moving smoothly over (coarse) unstructured grid Upcoming Delft3D FM Suite 2023.01
  27. 27. And in regular hydrodynamics? • Over 200 bugfixes and minor improvements, ongoing 3D work. • Also worth mentioning again: our releases on HPC Linux using Singularity containers (earlier talk by Adri Mourits). • Improved documentation of obsolete/changed input keywords: 27 ** ERROR : While reading 'test.mdu': keyword [geometry] bedlevelfile is no longer supported. ** ERROR : While reading 'test.mdu': Old unsupported keywords used: Check Section "Overview of deprecated and removed keywords" in the User Manual for information on how to update the input file.
  28. 28. Planned for 2023 • D-Morphology (2D) Improved method for Exner equation • D-Waves Improvements (see separate slide) • D-Flow FM: Thermobaricity Include pressure effects on salinity and temperature stratification and circulation in deep lakes • D-Flow FM: Ice modelling on flexible mesh − Only ice melt and growth (for lakes) − No horizontal transport yet • D-Flow FM – D-Morphology (3D) Robust and accurate 3D sediment modelling, which is currently not the case (NB. No problems yet for salinity and temperature in 3D) • D-Flow FM: 1D2D Parallel version (MPI) Familiar functionality of 2D3D now also for 1D2D • D-Flow FM: Purely 1D solver Upcoming Delft3D FM Suite 2023.01 28 Ice thickness Lake IJssel at 16-1-97 with Delft3D Temperatures at large depths

  30. 30. Delft3D FM Beta testing programme For many years already, several of you have helped us improving our software by beta testing early functionality and collaborating in research project. A sincere THANK YOU is in place! And the beta testing programme continues. Let us know if you’re interested in collaborating on some of our beforementioned new plans and also if you have additional ideas. Upcoming Delft3D FM Suite 2023.01 30
