Boss: Not you anymore.
A man and his wife in court getting a
divorce. The problem was who
should get custody of the child.
The wife jumped up and said: "Your
Honor. I brought the child into the
world with pain and labour, Child
should be in my custody."
The judge turns to the husband and
says: "What do you have to say in
your defense?"
The man sat for a while contemplat-
ing then slowly rose.
"Your Honor. If I put a coin in a
vending machine and a Pepsi comes
out, whose Pepsi is it? The ma-
chine’s or mine?"
An elderly man lay dying in his bed.
Nearing the final curtain, he sudden-
ly smelled the aroma of his favourite
chocolate chip cookies wafting up
the stairs. He gathered his remaining
strength, and lifted himself from the
bed.
Leaning against the wall, he slowly
made his way out of the bedroom,
and with even greater effort forced
himself down the stairs, gripping the
railing with both hands. With la-
boured breath, he leaned against the
door-frame, gazing into the kitchen.
Were it not for death's agony, he
would have thought himself already
in heaven: there, spread out upon
newspapers on the kitchen table were
literally hundreds of his favourite
chocolate chip cookies.
Was it heaven? Or, was it one final
act of heroic love from his devoted
wife, seeing to it that he left this
world a happy man?
Mustering one great final effort, he
threw himself toward the table, land-
ing on his knees in a rumpled pos-
ture. His parched lips parted; the
wondrous taste of the cookie was
already in his mouth; seemingly
bringing him back to life.
The aged and withered hand, shak-
ingly made its way to a cookie at the
edge of the table, when it was sud-
denly smacked with a spatula by his
wife. "Stay out of those!" she said,
"They're for the funeral."
Because I'm a man, when I catch a
cold, I need someone to bring me
soup and take care of me while I lie
in bed and moan. You're a woman.
You never get as sick as I do, so for
you this is no problem.
Because I'm a man, I can be relied
upon to purchase basic groceries at
the store, like milk or bread. I cannot
be expected to find exotic items like
"cumin" or "tofu." For all I know,
these are the same thing.
Because I'm a man, I think what
you're wearing is fine. I thought
what you were wearing five minutes
ago was fine, too. Either pair of
shoes is fine. With the belt or with-
out it, looks fine. Your hair is fine.
You look fine. Can we just go now?

children!! It's the time of year to get
those feet tapping and legs kicking
and Flynn O'Kane Academy of
Dance is the place to be!! The Acad-
emy run by world renowned dancers
and 'Lord of the Dance' stars Berna-
dette Flynn and Damien O'Kane is
now entering into its fourth estab-
lished year celebrating a fusion of
Irish Dance and Performance. Berna-
dette and Damien are privileged to
nurture their students' artistic poten-
tial and are very much dedicated to
the growth and development of each
student. Love and passion for dance
have always been such important
ingredients in the duo's aims for their
Academy.
This is very much reflected
in their Summer Camp Showcase
which continues to grow bigger and
stronger each year. It truly is a cele-
bration of dance and offers some-
thing for all children.
On the competitive circuit, Flynn
O'Kane have had another fantastic
year with some amazing results. Last
November the Academy racked up
three Leinster and two Munster titles.
They also had a podium 3rd place at
the World Championships at Easter,
their dancer Siobhan Phelan brought
the 'World
Globe' back to
Tipperary. They
also achieved
many top ten
placings at the
recent Irish Na-
tional Champi-
onships.

We cordially invite you to our Pres-
entation Secondary School Reunion,
Thurles on Saturday, September 21st
2013 to relive those precious memo-
ries. Students who left school be-
tween 1942 and 2002 will have the
opportunity to meet with classmates,
teachers of yesteryear, revisit old
classrooms and become acquainted
with new ones, walk around the
ground where you will come upon
our new State of the Art Sports Com-
plex and a wholly refurbished Cafe-
teria. You will enter the school by a
Grade A hotel-style foyer and … but
why am I detailing all this? Come
and see for yourself! After all, it is
the year of the Gathering. What bet-
ter time to have a school gathering?
There will be miles of photos and a
treasury of trophies on display. The
halls and corridors echo with the
voices and laughter of over 600 stu-
dents daily. We would like your
voice, your laughter to be part of the
school once more. Visiting on one’s
own can be a bit lonely, a bit nostal-
gic, and even a bit daunting. Tell
your former classmates, family and
friends as visiting with fellow “pil-
grims” is a totally different experi-
ence. Be part of that experience!
The Presentation Sisters have been
involved in education in Thurles
since 1817. The Boarding school
was established in 1914, the present
secondary school was built in 1970.
Those of you who were boarders
will have difficulty recognising your
“home from home.” I could elabo-
rate on the wonderful refurbishment
but instead, I invite you again to
come and see for yourselves.
Due to the large numbers expected
on the day tickets must be purchased
in advance. Tickets are now on sale
and are limited so buy early to avoid

Claire Walsh was presented with a Stu-
dent of the Year Award in the Ad-
vanced Hairdressing Course in
Templemore College by Alan Kelly

Transport, Tourism and Sport. Claire
successfully completed her Advanced
Diploma in Hairdressing with City and
Guilds and her Dept of Education Sen-

The Advanced hairdressing course in
Templemore College covers such areas

The 1913 Lockout marked the begin-
ning of a decade of change for Ire-
land, resulting in independence and
the creation of a new state. The
Lockout is widely seen as one of the
seminal events in the creation of the
new state.
100 years on from this most historic
industrial conflict and five years on
from a calamitous bank collapse,
‘From Lockout to Bailout: Sept 1913
– 2013’ will create ‘a weekend of
conversations’, examining the chal-
lenges facing Ireland then and now;
creating a space once again for new
ideas to emerge.
Historians, authors, social activists
and leading commentators will gath-
er at Nenagh Arts Centre, Nenagh,
Co Tipperary in September (27 – 29)
for the weekend event with special
guest Fintan O’Toole.
This commemorative event will also
look to the future for the Republic,
asking questions about the changing
political, economic and societal land-
scape.
Other speakers throughout the week-
end will include RTE’s Aine Lawlor;
local award-winning author Donal
Ryan, historian Catriona Crowe; Dr.
Tom Collins; formerly of NUI May-
nooth; Dr. Peadar Kirby, University
of Limerick; Dr. Mary Murphy; NUI
Maynooth; Orla Tinsley, health cam-
paigner and Rev. Stephen Neill,
Cloughjordan, as well as Mid-West

This event is a ‘Nenagh Risings’ ini-

Nenagh Neptune Swimming club
We hope all our swimmers had a brilliant
summer, enjoyed the sunshine and hopefully
got in some swimming practice. For those of
you who didn't, its time to dust off your gog-
gles and root out your swimming kit as sea-
son 2013/14 starts on Monday 2nd
September.
During the summer, the committee have in-
vestigated options for our swimmers to cater
for the upcoming closure of the pool when
work starts on the new leisure park and up-
grading of facilities. Unfortunately this has
been hampered somewhat by the fact the clo-
sure date has changed a number of times but
the committee will provide and update on
registration night and will be available to an-
swer questions.
New Members: The club welcomes applica-
tions for new members. For all interested,

The closing date for applications will be
posted on the website shortly and published
in next weeks notes.
We look forward to catching up with every-
one and building upon the success and
achievement of last season. Finally a well
done to all our members for their achieve-
ments in the Leaving Cert. We wish them
every success as they move forward in their
chosen career paths and hope they continue
their swimming. A special mention to Shane
Cody who through his swimmimg has ob-
tained a sports scholarship with UL.
County Intermediate Championship
On Sunday last Aherlow defeated Moy-
carkey to win the County Intermediate
Championship Final. On Saturday, 14th
September Aherlow will play Scartaglin,
Kerry in the Munster Intermediate Club

Tipperary Intermediate Team
Tipperary’s Intermediate Ladies Football-
ers have been drawn to play the Ulster
champions Fermanagh in the TG4 All-Ire-
land Intermediate Championship Semi-
Final on the 7th of September at a venue
to be confirmed later in the week. Follow-
ing our extra time victory over Longford
on August 17th, the result was the subject
of a Longford appeal in to a point scored
during the Quarter-Final. The appeal was
dealt with on Friday last and the Ladies
Gaelic Football Association declined the
appeal.

Under the Munster Development Plan,
Munster Ladies Gaelic Football Associa-
tion will support the roll out of five Ready
Steady Coach workshops in the County
Tipperary. If your club is interested in

The Ladies Gaelic Football Association is
offering your club the chance to play in
Croke Park at their 40th All Ireland Final
on September 29th. They require 6 Under
10 teams and 6 Gaelic4Mothers & Others
teams to play at half time of the three TG4
All- Ireland Championship Finals. (All
teams should consist of 10 players per
team). An Under 14 team (12 players per
team) is required to assist as Ball Girls
during the three All-Ireland Champion-
ship Finals and three Under 14 teams are
needed to officiate at the half time of the
Exhibition Games (12 Players per team).

have been inspired by the village of
Ballyhea, Co. Cork, who are now
into their third year of marching eve-
ry Sunday in opposition to the bond-
holder bailouts.
We are a group looking to find more
people to come and join our march,
to send a message to the government,
that we are not going to put up with
these bailouts or the unjust austerity
measures imposed on the people of
Nenagh, and Ireland as a whole.
We meet every Sunday at 12 noon,
Banba Square, Nenagh. There are
alternative directions to the one
adopted by the government. Please
come out and join us. With enough
pressure, we can change that direc-
tion.

The Tax Poem
In 2006 a group of farmers in Coun-
ty Tipperary formed an organisation
called New Futures. This was at a
time of declining farming numbers,
lower incomes and higher depend-
ence on subsidies as well as increas-
ing isolation. The group devised a
training programme with it’s lead
partner, St. Sheelan’s College, Tem-
plemore. It was in conjunction with
the Leonardo project and funded by
the EU. Bridget Kirwan and Sheila
Hoctor of Tipperary Institute both
worked closely with the group.
The basic aim of the group was to
help it’s members cope with the
challenges of modern farming and
to educate themselves with the skills
to diversify. It also aimed to fulfil
the social needs of it’s members.
This has proved successful as mem-
bers have found a place to discuss
their problems and to look at the
barriers they regard as obstacles and
break them down.
To date the group has completed a
range of training programmes in-
cluding Personal Development,
Computer Courses specifically de-
signed for farmers, Farm Safety and
First Aid. The group meets once
every month throughout the year.
Almost all meetings are attended by
a guest speaker. Topics covered
have been varied ranging from Fi-
nancial Advisors, Accountants, Per-
sonnel from MABS and from
Tipperary Enterprise Board. Local
Business Representatives have giv-
en an insight into setting a business
or on farm enterprise. Among those
who have shared their knowledge
and expertise with the group are Pe-
ter Ward of Country Choice
Nenagh, Michael Cantwell of Boul-
abane Ice Cream and Tom Starr,
Nenagh who spoke on bee-keeping.
We also continuously address
health issues and have had talks
from a GP, Dietician and a presenta-
tion on mental health from Michael
Egan, Founder of Living Links.
Day Trips are a big part of our activ-
ities. Places visited include Cool-
more Stud, Leinster House, C&F
Energy, Athenry, Lisheen Mines,
Rearcross Food Project and the
ECO Village and Community Farm
in Cloughjordan. All trips have
proven educational and sociable.
A strong emphasis is placed on each
members social needs.
We are also aware of the needs of
farmers outside the group. With this
in mind we have organised a semi-
nar “Harnessing Strengths During
Challenging Times” on Tuesday
1st October 2013 in the Abbey
Court Hotel, Nenagh at 7 pm. The
seminar will be conducted by Shane
Martin a registered psychologist.
This seminar will deal directly with
the difficulties faced by farmers par-
ticularly as a result of the bad
weather of 2012/13 and the fodder
crisis which led to the ongoing fi-
nancial crisis. This is an opportuni-
ty for farmers to meet fellow
farmers to address their similar with
an expert in a relaxed manner.

North Tipp Macra na Feirme
North Tipp Macra have just had an
very busy few weeks. Well done to
Catherine Maher who represented us
at the annual Ms Macra Competition
in Dundrum earlier this month and
big congratulations to Joe Maher
who came second in the Internation-
al Bachelor of the Year competition
in Ballinasloe.
Last Saturday saw all the hard work
of Tipperary Macra’s Relay For Life
team came to fruition. A team of
well over 24 members walked for 24
hours in Toomevara for the Relay
For Life in aid of the Irish Cancer
Society. There was a huge turnout of
North Tipp and South Tipp members
as well as massive support from our
very good friends at Offaly Macra.
Thank you all very much especially
team captains Catherine Maher and
Una Ryan. There was a lot of hard
work involved in getting ready for
this event and the results were fan-
tastic. Lots of fun was had at the
event and all our members can be
very proud of themselves.

Self-care to prevent anxiety and burnout.
Some simple exercises.
Bourne also recognises the importance of
adrenalin increasing anxiety levels. I will
further explore adrenalin when dealing with
specific types of anxiety and with panic, but
at this point, I would like to draw your atten-
tion to adrenal exhaustion, which makes us
vulnerable to anxiety. Adrenal exhaustion is
a gradual process occurring in stages, in
which the adrenal glands suffer chronic ex-
haustion. We commonly call this burn out. In
the early stages, the adrenal glands manage
to recover, but with prolonged and continued
stress, they finally cave in resulting in chron-
ic burn out. This means that they malfunction
rather like a damaged thermostat of a car that
fails to regulate the temperature. The mal-
function results in too much or too little
adrenalin being produced, resulting in un-
controlled emotional stress pressure and
mood swings. Not only can this bring burn
out, but it can cause fibromyalgia, bronchitis,
sinusitis, and various other complaints. The
symptoms of burn out, range from lethargy
and exhaustion to frequent colds and breath-
ing complaints. Other symptoms of adrenal
exhaustion include irritability, dizziness,
problems concentrating, difficulty in remem-
bering things, insomnia, low blood sugar,
and allergies to foods, pollens etc. It may
also be a contributor to premenstrual tension.
My experience is that it is possible, but very
difficult, to recover from burn out. Self-care
is vital to recovery. Self-care involves nur-
turing yourself - body, soul and spirit. Not
overworking or overdoing it. The following
is an inventory of simple exercises that pro-
mote mental health and peace:
Physical self-care
Eat regularly (breakfast, lunch, dinner). Eat
healthily. Exercise. Regular medical care.
Take time off when sick. Massages. Dance,
swim, walk, run, play sports, sing, other
physical activities. Take time to meet sexual
needs. Sufficient sleep. Wear clothes you
like. Vacations (long and mini). Make space
for time alone without interruptions.
Psychological self-care
Time for self-reflection. Personal counsel-
ling. Use a journal. Read literature that is
unrelated to work. Do something at which
you are not expert. Work on decreasing
stress in your life. Listen to your thoughts,
beliefs, attitudes and feelings. Let others
know different aspects of you. Use your
intelligence in new ways e.g. going to art
museums, sports events, theatre, etc. Be open
to receiving from others. Be curious. Say no
to extra responsibilities sometimes
Emotional self-care
Spend time with others whose company you
enjoy. Stay in contact with important people
in your life. Praise and affirm yourself. Find
ways to increase your sense of self-esteem.
Re-read favourite books and re-view favour-
ite films. Identify comforting activities, ob-
jects, people, relationships, places, and seek
them out. Allow yourself to feel your feel-
ings and to cry. Find ways to make you
laugh. Play with children
Spiritual self-care
Make time for reflection. Spend time with
nature. Find a spiritual connection or com-
munity. Be open to inspiration. Cherish your
optimism and hope. Be aware of nonmaterial
aspects of life. Try at times not to be in
charge or the expert. Be open to not know-
ing. Identify what is meaningful to you and
notice its place in your life. Meditate. Pray.
Sing. Spend time with children. Experience
awe. Contribute to causes in which you be-
lieve. Read inspirational literature (talks,
music, etc.).
SELF-NURTURING ACTIVITIES.
Take a warm bath. Have breakfast in bed.
Take a sauna. Get a massage. Buy yourself a
rose. Take a bubble bath. Go to a pet store
and play with the animals. Walk on a scenic
path in a park. Visit a zoo. Have a manicure
of pedicure. Stop and smell some flowers.
Wake up and watch the sunrise. Watch the
sunset. Relax with a good book and/or sooth-
ing music. Go rent a funny video. Play our
favourite music and dance to it by yourself.
Go to bed early. Take a ‘mental health day’
off from work. Fix a special dinner just for
yourself and eat by candlelight. Go for a
walk. Call a good friend – or several good
friends. Go out to a fine restaurant just with
yourself. Go to the beach. Take a scenic
drive. Meditate. Buy new clothes. Browse in
a book or record store for as long as you
want. Buy yourself a cuddly stuffed animal
and play with it. Write yourself a love letter
and mail it. Ask a special person to nurture
you (feed, cuddle, and /or read to you). Buy
yourself something special that you can af-
ford. Go see a good film or show. Go to the
park and feed the ducks, swing on the swings
and so on. Visit a museum or another inter-
esting place. Give yourself more time than
you need to accomplish whatever you are
doing (let yourself dawdle). Work on your
favourite puzzle or puzzle book. Go into a
hot hut or Jacuzzi. Record an affirmation
tape. Write out an ideal scenario concerning
a goal and then visualize it. Read an inspira-
tional book. Write a letter to an old friend.
Bake or cook something special. Go win-
dow-shopping. Buy a mediation tape. Get a
therapist to do a relaxation/visualisation ex-
ercise with you. Listen to a positive, motiva-
tional tape. Write a special diary about your
accomplishments. Apply fragrant lotion all
over your body. Exercise. Sit and hold your
favourite stuffed animal.
As you can see these are simple, yet they are
very effective in allaying the severity of
anxiety. They are only one part of the self-
care solution, however. Self-care also in-
volves having good boundaries – being able
to say no. There is nothing more debilitating
than trying to please everyone. It is more
than human. I regard good boundaries as one
of the keys to success, and I have devoted an
entire chapter to it in my book on abuse.
