2. Emotional intelligence (otherwise known as emotional
quotient or EQ) is “ The ability to understand, use, and
manage your own emotions in positive ways” to relieve
stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others,
overcome challenges and defuse conflict.
Emotional intelligence is “ the ability to identify
and regulate one's emotions and understand the
emotions the others.” A high EQ helps you to build
relationships, reduce team stress, defuse conflict

3. Term First Coined in 1964
Gained popularity in 1995 best-selling book entitled
‘ Emotional Intelligence’ written by science journalist Daniel
Goleman.
Goleman defined “EI as the array of skills and
characteristics that drive leadership performance”.
Peter Salovey and John Mayer, as “The ability to monitor
one's own and other people's emotions, to discriminate
between different emotions and label them appropriately,
and to use emotional information to guide thinking and
behavior".
This definition was later broken down and refined into four
proposed abilities: perceiving, using, understanding, and
managing emotions.
4. According to Daniel Goleman , an American psychologist
who helped to popularize emotional intelligence, there are
five key elements to it:
Self-awareness. (Recognising Internal Feelings)
Self-regulation.( Handling Emotions by appropriate
situations)
Motivation.(Using Self Control to channel
emotions)
Empathy.( Understanding the emotions of others in
perspective way)
Social skills.(By using intra-personal skills to
handle inter-personal skills for handling relations.
5. The four domains of Emotional Intelligence — self
awareness, self management, social awareness,
and relationship management — each can help a
leader face any crisis with lower levels of stress,
less emotional reactivity and fewer unintended
consequences.
