Calling on the Name
of The Lord
Rom. 10:11-13
Rom. 10:11-13 - 11For the Scripture says, “Whoever
believes on Him will not be put to shame.” 12For
there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for
the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon
Him. 13For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD
shall be saved.”
Calling on the Name of The Lord

Luke 6:46 - 46But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’
and not do the things which I say?
Matt. 7:21 - 21Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord,
Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he
who does the will of My Father in heaven.

• Defining the phrase
– From the Greek “epikaleó”
– to call upon / to appeal to
Acts 25:9-12 - 9But Festus, wanting to do the Jews
a favor, answered Paul and said, “Are you willing to
go up to Jerusalem and there be judged before me
concerning these things?” 10So Paul said, “I stand at
Caesar’s judgment seat, where I ought to be
judged. To the Jews I have done no wrong, as you
very well know. 11For if I am an offender, or have
committed anything deserving of death, I do not
object to dying; but if there is nothing in these
things of which these men accuse me, no one can
deliver me to them. I appeal to Caesar.”

• Defining the phrase
– From the Greek “epikaleó”
– to call upon / to appeal to
– A resort to a higher
authority or greater
power, as for sanction,
corroboration, or a
decision
Matt. 28:18 - 18And Jesus came and spoke to them,
saying, “All authority has been given to Me in
heaven and on earth.
Zeph. 3:9 - 9For then I will restore to the peoples a
pure language, that they all may call on the name
of the LORD, to serve Him with one accord.
Zeph. 3:9 - 9For then I will restore to the peoples a
pure language, that they all may call on the name
of the LORD, to serve Him with one accord.
Col. 3:17 - 17And whatever you do in word or deed,
do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks
to God the Father through Him.
Calling on the Name of The Lord
• Hold on a minute! What about…
• Defining the phrase
• How?
Acts 2:21 - 21And it shall come to pass that whoever
calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.’
Acts 2:38 - 38Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and
let every one of you be baptized in the name of
Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall
receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 2:21 - 21And it shall come to pass that whoever
calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.’
Acts 2:38 - 38Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and

Acts 2:21 - 21And it shall come to pass that whoever
calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.’
Acts 2:38 - 38Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and
let every one of you be baptized in the name of
Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall

Acts 2:21 - 21And it shall come to pass that whoever
calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.’
Acts 2:38 - 38Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and
let every one of you be baptized in the name of

Acts 2:38 - 38Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and
let every one of you be baptized in the name of
Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall
receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Rom. 10:14-16 - 14How then shall they call on Him
in whom they have not believed? And how shall
they believe in Him of whom they have not heard?
And how shall they hear without a preacher? 15And
how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is
written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who
preach the gospel of peace, who bring glad tidings
of good things!” 16But they have not all obeyed the
gospel. For Isaiah says, “LORD, who has believed
our report?”
Rom. 10:14-17 - 14How then shall they call on Him
in whom they have not believed? And how shall
they believe in Him of whom they have not heard?
And how shall they hear without a preacher? 15And
how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is
written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who
preach the gospel of peace, who bring glad tidings
of good things!” 16But they have not all obeyed the
gospel. For Isaiah says, “LORD, who has believed
our report?” 17So then faith comes by hearing, and
hearing by the word of God.
Heb. 11:6 - 6But without faith it is impossible to
please Him, for he who comes to God must believe
that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who
diligently seek Him.
Heb. 11:6 - 6But without faith it is impossible to
please Him, for he who comes to God must believe
that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who
diligently seek Him.
Acts 22:6-11 - 6“Now it happened, as I journeyed
and came near Damascus at about noon, suddenly
a great light from heaven shone around me. 7And I
fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me,
‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?’ 8So I
answered, ‘Who are You, Lord?’ And He said to me,
‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are
persecuting.’ 9“And those who were with me
indeed saw the light and were afraid, but they did
not hear the voice of Him who spoke to me.
Acts 22:6-11 - 10So I said, ‘What shall I do, Lord?’
And the Lord said to me, ‘Arise and go into
Damascus, and there you will be told all things
which are appointed for you to do.’ 11 And since I
could not see for the glory of that light, being led
by the hand of those who were with me, I came
into Damascus.

man according to the law, having a good testimony
with all the Jews who dwelt there, 13came to me;
and he stood and said to me, ‘Brother Saul, receive
your sight.’ And at that same hour I looked up at
him. 14Then he said, ‘The God of our fathers has
chosen you that you should know His will, and see
the Just One, and hear the voice of His mouth.
15For you will be His witness to all men of what you
have seen and heard. 16And now why are you
waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away
your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’
