2. The university syllabus for a residential project requires students to
design a single-family home on a flat site, considering function and
form, climate, construction materials, technology, and building
regulations. In the Design Studio project, students must design a
residence on a 1.5-acre island near Dalavapuram, accessible only
by boat. The project aims to equip students with sound design
principles by focusing on form and space development with respect
to context, socio-cultural factors, and knowledge of pre-design,
grid, construction techniques, and climatology.
The design process involves disruption through unlearning and
provocation, critical appraisals of live and literature case
studies, understanding of new structural techniques and
construction details, and focus on model making. The course
plan involves collecting and analyzing data, deriving the
design, and creating conceptual models encapsulating multiple
aspects observed and studied from the site. The emphasis is
on learning by making as part of the design process, and
acquiring critical thinking skills for architectural design.
