WelcomeThe world’s second largest nation is big….REALLY BIG. In
fact it’s so large that many have a difficulty getting to grips
with the scale of it.
For example Halifax, Nova Scotia is closer to London than to its west coast relation,
Vancouver. It takes 5½ hours to fly from one side of the country to the other. Put
another way, Canada is nearly 38 times larger than the UK but with only half the
population. This amounts to only 3½ people per square km whereas that figure for the
UK is 249… When you consider that a vast amount of the population live close to the
American border it’s not surprising to learn that most of Canada is almost completely
devoid of us two-legged mammals!
Having travelled over the years to many parts of Canada I am always struck by the
amazing diversity of its landscape, the wonderful range of activities you can do there
and the genuine friendliness of its people. There is so much that defines Canada:
the rugged coastlines of the Maritimes; the awe inspiring Rocky Mountains; Yukon’s
magnificent Klondike; Manitoba’s polar bears; the excitement of major cities such as
Toronto and Vancouver and the cultural diversity of its people – a list that could go on
and on. This is a country that has everything you could imagine and a lot more besides.
This brochure aims to provide a flavour of what Canada can offer you as a holiday
destination - more detailed information is on our website. If you can’t quite find what
you’re looking for then our knowledgeable team will be more than happy to assist.
When travelling with Discover the World you get a truly individual service as well as an
industry leading pledge which provides complete peace of mind, covering as it does:
financial security, travel disruption and the promise that there will be no surcharges on
the price of the holiday you book, come what may.
Contact us by telephone, email or post, or visit us at our office in Banstead. We can
promise you a warm and friendly welcome and might also meet Sam, our resident

Our Unique Pledge
Why you should book with the experts...
The Specialists
We are one of the UK’s leading
specialist tour operators and
have been so for nearly 30 years.
We know what makes a good
holiday and our expert knowledge
combines with a commitment to
personal service and a passion
for all our destinations.
Our team of travel specialists
accredited by the Canadian
Tourism Commission, is on
hand to offer help and advice
throughout the booking process
in order to create the perfect
bespoke holiday for you. This
includes booking your complete
holiday package, including
flights and all your ground
arrangements. In addition,
we select our travel partners
very carefully, based on the
highest levels of service, value
and quality, and we constantly
monitor their commitment
to customer satisfaction.
Value for money
Contrary to popular belief, it is
usually less expensive to book
through a tour operator than to
book direct on the internet – and
far more straightforward! Due
to our longstanding relationships
with a variety of partners we can
secure rooms at key hotels at
the busiest times, with excellent
rates and very often special
offers too. When you book with
us you’ll know exactly what is
included and what’s not - we
don’t believe in hidden extras. We
make regular checks to ensure
our prices remain competitive.
Price promise
In the unlikely event that you
should find the same holiday
arrangements elsewhere at a
lower price, our ‘price promise’
means we will do our best to
improve on it. But bear in mind,
sometimes arrangements which
appear the same can be very
different so we ask that you
forward the details of your offer
to our team, either by post or
email (pricechallenge@discover-
the-world.co.uk) and we shall
be in touch very quickly!
No surcharges
Once you have booked a holiday
with Discover the World, and we
have confirmed it, there will be
no further increases regardless
of what happens with Pound
Sterling, world oil prices and
taxes. There are no exceptions
and if you are considering
travelling with an alternative
operator you might want to
ensure you read their small print!
We believe in value for money, excellent customer service and a personal touch when planning your
holiday and our friendly, knowledgeable and experienced team is on hand to help you every step of the
way. At Discover the World your holiday is as important to us from the time you first get in touch, to the
moment you return home.
4. 4 All our holidays are bound by our Terms & Conditions, which can be found on our website
Booking independently – an informed choice
In this day and age, it may be
quite tempting to try and book
your holiday independently
using the Internet rather than
the services of a specialist tour
operator. This is of course an
option, but be aware of the
possible pitfalls and the potential
false economy in doing so.
There are various factors to
take into consideration, for
example assurance of quality
and standards, what happens
if the airline changes or cancels
your flights, or the hotel room
you thought you had booked
becomes ‘overbooked’? What
financial or consumer protection
do you have and what happens
if something goes wrong on
holiday? You may also find that
by the time you have booked
all your arrangements there is
little or no cost saving and you
could well end up paying a
lot more. Whilst of course you
have a choice, these are things
to take into consideration but
by booking through us we can
take the worry out of these
eventualities by offering quality
products, fully bonded and
financially protected holidays
with trusted ‘package holiday’
customer protection, along with
peace of mind that with 24/7
round-the-clock support, we are
only ever a phone call away.

Your money and customer
rights are protected
A key benefit of booking with
a UK-based specialist operator
is that you are covered by very
stringent British travel industry
regulations and UK legislation
throughout your holiday. Our
air holiday packages are ATOL
protected by the Civil Aviation
Authority. Through our AITO
(Association of Independent
Tour Operators) bond, we also
offer 100% financial protection
for non-flight inclusive holidays,
ensuring that all money paid
to us is protected no matter
what. We are also members of
ABTA The Travel Association
(formerly the Association
of British Travel Agents).
Travel disruption
We are proud of our excellent
reputation for looking after our
clients, without question, should
the unexpected occur. Our ‘Travel
Disruption Charter’ offers a simple
and transparent guarantee.
Our team of dedicated travel
consultants will do everything
possible to rearrange your trip
should it be cancelled or if your
outward flights(s) cannot operate
within 24 hours of the scheduled
departure time due to a range
of natural events. If it is not
possible to re-arrange your trip,
you will receive a refund of the
trip cost you have paid to us.
When you are on holiday, if it
becomes necessary to alter or
reroute your itinerary, we will
make these arrangements at no
additional cost to you. In the
event your scheduled return
flights(s) are cancelled and it
is necessary to remain in your
destination, we will provide
you with accommodation and
meals until such time that
we or the airline can make
arrangements to return you
home as soon as possible. For full
terms and conditions just give
us a call or visit our website.
Reliability
We select our travel partners
very carefully, based on the
highest levels of service, value
and quality and we constantly

In this brochure you will find an
indication of the lowest price
for each holiday at the time of
going to press. Up-to-date pricing
is available on our website or
can be obtained by calling our
team of Canada Specialists.

during your holiday
and when you return
If there are any issues during
your holiday, our 24hr assistance
service is just a phone call away.
And in most destinations, the
aid of local agents and partners
give you added peace of mind.
This commitment to you does
not end when you step off
the aircraft; whether you have
general feedback, want to
discuss any aspect of your trip,
recommend a restaurant, or share
an unforgettable moment you’ve
captured on your camera then
we’re happy to hear
from you.

polar bear viewing in October, and the winter months provide a chance
to try dog-sledding under the northern lights.

international flights, however we will be happy to provide you with our
best available airfares for your preferred routing and specific travel dates
at the time of quoting for your holiday arrangements.

the Cabot Trail’s rugged coastline, or cross the
Arctic Circle on the Dempster Highway.

holiday. By day, a blanket of snow offers
adventure against a pristine backdrop; after
dark you can watch the northern lights
streak across the night sky.

Alberta
Neighbouring British Columbia, Alberta’s western boundary
runs through the spectacular Rocky Mountains. Consequently
this diverse province boasts some of the most stunning alpine
landscapes in the country, but it also offers sweeping prairies,
rolling farmland, forests and lakes.
Without a doubt one of Alberta’s
main attractions is the awe-
inspiring Banff National Park,
which is the best known of the
Rockies’ national parks. The
magnificent scenery comprising
mountain peaks, forests, glacial
lakes and powerful rivers covers
an area of some 6,641 sq km
(2,564 sq miles).
The Banff township grew up
around the hot springs that were
discovered here in the 1880’s
and provides an excellent base
from which to explore the park’s
many attractions. Probably the
most notable of these is Lake
Louise. The striking turquoise
waters backed by rising snow
capped peaks provide an iconic
image of the region. Between
Lake Louise and Jasper the
famous Icefields Parkway is
a 142-mile spectacular drive
through the outstanding beauty
and geological features of the
Canadian Rockies.
The capital of Alberta is
Edmonton, situated on the
banks of the Saskatchewan River
and home to the largest mall
and entertainment centre in
North America. More than just a
shopping centre, West Edmonton
Mall also has a giant water park,
a man-made lake, a skating rink,
two mini-golf courses, 21 movie
theatres, a Vegas-style casino and
an amusement park!
Having hosted the Winter
Olympics in 1988, Calgary is a
popular ski area during the winter

the summer. Calgary is perhaps
best known for its Stampede – a

year celebrating the rich cowboy
heritage of the province.

Yukon
The Yukon Territory, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut represent
Canada’s wild north. Stretching into the Arctic Circle, here you will
find rugged landscapes and a colourful history of First Nations, traders
and gold prospectors. The population is small, the landscape vast and
the wildlife prolific – you may spot moose and grizzly bears.
The city of Whitehorse is the main
gateway to the Yukon and makes for
a great base from which to explore the
territory, whilst further north quirky
Dawson City is forever synonymous with
the Klondike Gold Rush. Dawson City’s
unique architecture helps to evoke a

Manitoba
Located in central Canada, along with Saskatchewan, Manitoba’s
landscapes are diverse. From the prairie grasslands in the south
and west to the east’s countless lakes and forests, with a wild
north stretching into sub-Arctic tundra.
The gateway to Manitoba is the city of
Winnipeg, originally an important trading
post for First Nation people dating back
thousands of years. From Winnipeg it is
possible to travel to excellent fishing and
birdwatching areas throughout the province.
But undoubtedly the biggest draw to Manitoba
is the tiny frontier town of Churchill, perched
on the edge of Hudson Bay. In the summer the
bay attracts the unusual white beluga whales in
their thousands, whilst every October the region
is transformed into the polar bear capital of the
world. The polar bears congregate on the tundra
as they wait for the ice in the bay to freeze
over, offering a rare chance to view the world’s
largest land predators in their natural habitat.

Ontario
Canada’s second largest province is over one million square miles,
stretching from the Great Lakes on the US border to the icy shores
of Hudson Bay. Much of the north is relatively inaccessible, in
contrast to the south which is home to Toronto, Ottawa and the
famous Niagara Falls.
Toronto is one of North
America’s most dynamic cities, the
financial and commercial centre
of Canada, with a cosmopolitan
mix of inhabitants, fine art
museums, suave café bars, luxury
stores, and the world’s second
tallest free-standing structure, the
CN Tower. The twin attractions
of the mighty Niagara Falls
and picturesque Niagara-on-
the-Lake are both within easy
reach of the city, as are countless
wineries and orchards.
Canada’s capital city, Ottawa,
boasts splendid gothic Parliament
Buildings rising majestically
over the Ottawa River and a
feast of national history and
stately architecture for visitors
to uncover. Each winter the
Rideau Canal freezes over,
making a unique outdoor
ice-rink, whilst in spring the
city is ablaze with tulips. And
don’t miss ByWard Market for a
unique shopping experience.
The 1000 Islands region is well
worth a visit – here, scattered
along the St Lawrence River, lie
countless islands, lighthouses,
maritime museums and
castles. Beautiful scenery and a
fascinating history can be enjoyed
from the comfort of one of many
boat trips available in the area.
Rural Ontario also has much
to offer, with over 900 lakes
making up the scenic Muskoka
region. Also known as ‘cottage
country’, this is where Ontarians
come for a weekend escape.
Nearby Algonquin Provincial
Park is another highlight not
to be missed, offering an easily
accessible taste of Canadian
wilderness. Renowned for its
extensive networks of lakes,
rivers and streams, forests of
maple and pine trees, and
abundant wildlife, this is one
of the best places in Canada
to spot the elusive moose.

Québec
French-speaking Québec is a vast province renowned for its thriving
culture, cuisine and entertainment. Its attractive cities lie scattered
along the shores of the St Lawrence River, originally a key trading
route and now perhaps better known for its surprising marine-life.
Québec City is the provincial
capital and is renowned for its
blend of European charm in a
New World setting. The distinctive
fairy-tale architecture of the
Fairmont Le Château Frontenac
and the turbulent origins of
Battlefields Park give the city a
strong sense of history, and, as
the only fortified city in North
America, Québec is a UNESCO
World Heritage Site.
Further south lies Montréal, the
world’s largest French-speaking
city outside of Paris. Located
on an island at the confluence
of the St Lawrence and Ottawa
Rivers, Montréal’s Old Port offers
a wealth of water-based activities.
Excellent shopping, dining and
nightlife give the city a real
contemporary buzz, and Montréal
regularly hosts international
festivals and sporting events.
Connecting the two cities is
the mighty St Lawrence River,
the gateway to the Great Lakes
and a key part of Québec’s early
fur-trading success. The river also
has a surprising secret: here you
can find as many as 13 different
species of whales, including
the eye-catching white beluga
and the huge blue whale. The
picturesque village of Tadoussac,
situated at the confluence of the
spectacular Saguenay Fjord and
the St. Lawrence, is the main base
for whale watching excursions.
Québec is also renowned for its
winter sports - Mont Tremblant
is a world class ski-resort, but
other snow activities are available
throughout the province,
including dog-sledding, snow-
shoeing and snowmobiling.
Québec even has its own Ice
Hotel, the perfect place to sleep
for a truly memorable winter break.

Experience two of French-speaking Canada’s
most vibrant cities. A 3-night stay in Montréal
offers plenty of time to take in the key
attractions, with a full day trip to Québec City
providing an historic insight into this multi-
cultural province.
Day 1 Montréal Upon arrival in Montréal your day is
at leisure to explore the city.

city’s key icons, taking in the Notre Dame Basilica, St.
Joseph’s Oratory, Old Montréal, the French Quarter

Historic Québec
From World Heritage-listed Québec City, via the maritime
museums of the St Lawrence, to the beautiful 17th century
buildings of Old Montréal, it’s not just the language that makes
you think you are in Europe. Take time to delve into Québec’s
fascinating past.
Wilderness Retreat
Just 2 hours from both Montréal and Québec City, secluded
Hôtel Sacacomie sits in the heart of the forest, overlooking Lake
Sacacomie. Enjoy a wealth of outdoor activities or simply relax and
enjoy the peace of the wilderness.

Newfoundland and Labrador
boasts a colourful history
incorporating marauding
Vikings, indigenous Beothuck
Indians and Basque whalers.
This fascinating past is still in
evidence today in a wealth
of historic sites and museums
throughout the province, such
as the Norse village of L’Anse
aux Meadows, whilst countless
lighthouses stand testament to
the mariners and fishermen that
continue to brave these waters.
The World Heritage Sites of Gros
Morne and Torngat Mountains
National Parks offer spectacular
scenery and wildlife and provide
a real sense of the remoteness of
this awe-inspiring part of Canada.
Icebergs are regularly sighted in
the ocean here as spectacular
structures up to ten thousand
years old float south from the
Arctic, following a route known
as ‘Iceberg Alley’.
Nova Scotia is almost entirely
surrounded by water and the
character of this province is
greatly influenced by its seafaring
past. Fishing is a major industry
and lovers of seafood will not
be disappointed here. Halifax is
the largest city in the Maritimes,
providing a good contrast to the
nearby fishing villages of Peggy’s
Cove and Lunenburg, whilst to the
east the Cabot Trail is justifiably
rated as one of Canada’s most
scenic drives.
Just across the Bay of Fundy,
famed for having the highest
tides in the world, lies the
province of New Brunswick.
Around 85% of New Brunswick
is covered in forest – pine, maple
and birch – making for some
fantastic fall colours. Canada’s
smallest province, Prince Edward
Island, is renowned for its lush
landscapes - red sand beaches,
rolling farmland and azure seas.
Boasting a lengthy Atlantic
coastline, the region as a whole
is renowned for whale-watching,
with large pods of humpback,
minke, sperm and blue whales
frequenting these waters each
summer. Bird life is also in
abundance, including puffins,
petrels and razorbills, as well as
hawks and ospreys.

popular region for visitors.

century Viking settlement of L’Anse aux Meadows; Gros Morne
National Park in Newfoundland; Nova Scotia’s picturesque Old
town Lunenburg and the fascinating Joggins Fossil Cliffs.
Whale Watching
During the summer the waters around Atlantic Canada
welcome humpbacks, orcas, fin and minke whales, harbour
porpoises, dolphins and seals. Sail from Newfoundland or
explore the Bay of Fundy, but don’t miss the chance for an epic
encounter with a cetacean!

Day 1 Campbell River Head to
Campbell River on Vancouver
Island’s east coast. The township
of Campbell River lies on the
shore of Discovery Passage and
boasts views out past Quadra
Island towards the rugged Coast
Mountain range of mainland BC.
Day 2 Campbell River-Knight
Inlet This morning you will be
transferred to the Campbell
River Float Plane dock for your
scenic flight over to Knight
Inlet Lodge. You will be given
a welcome orientation session
providing details of the wildlife
viewing that lies ahead.
Later you will join an excursion
to see the grizzly bears – this
may be by boat or to specially
designed viewing platforms,
depending on the season and
the location of the bears.
Grizzly bears come out of
hibernation in spring and can
be seen from the safety of a
boat as they feed on the banks
of Glendale Cove in Knight
Inlet. Their diet here consists
mainly of sedge grasses,
mussels and barnacles.
Later in the season, during
the autumn, you can enjoy
the incredible spectacle of the
bears feeding on salmon as
they return to the Glendale
River for spawning. A specially
constructed platform allows
for the best possible viewing
of this event, one of nature’s
truly great wildlife sights.
During your stay at Knight Inlet
Lodge there may also be time for
kayaking, guided hiking, a scenic
boat trip and the chance to spot
bald eagles and other bird life.
Whilst a 1-night stay will
be rewarding, this will only
allow time for a short boat
cruise in addition to the bear
watching excursion. We strongly
recommend spending 2 or 3
nights at the lodge in order to
immerse yourself in this great
wilderness and maximise your
wildlife-spotting opportunities.

Tailor-made Canada
Getting Around
If our suggested holidays have inspired you but don’t quite fit the bill, let us know! We can tailor-make
any itinerary to suit your own personal requirements. However, only you know exactly what you want
from your holiday, so to help us create your perfect itinerary, simply let us have an idea of your interests,
timescale and budget and we’ll take care of the rest, ensuring your time away will be fun and hassle-free.
Canada is the world’s second
largest country but fortunately
it’s close enough to the UK to
make a repeat visit a viable
option. So rather than trying to
see everything in one holiday,
we recommend focusing on one
or two provinces at a time, and
exploring them at a leisurely pace.
Longer distances can be covered
by air or rail, with train services
available right across the country.
Exploring by car or motorhome
offers flexibility whilst escorted
touring ensures you always have
an experienced guide on hand
– however you choose to travel,
you can be sure of an experience
to remember in Canada!
Self-drive
One of the most popular and
enjoyable ways of exploring
Canada is on a self-drive holiday.
With your own transport you
have the freedom to explore
hidden corners and to admire
the views, spot wildlife or
catch up with the locals as
and when you please.
Combine a rental car with a
selection of pre-booked hotels
and motels, or enjoy total
flexiblity with a motorhome
holiday – perfect for those wide
empty roads.
Rail Journeys
The most famous of Canada’s
railways is undoubtedly the
Rocky Mountaineer, travelling
between Vancouver and the
Rockies via 3 different scenic
routes throughout the summer
months. Treat yourself to
the Gold Leaf Service and
take advantage of the train’s
domed viewing carriage for
uninterrupted mountain views.
More extensive year-round rail
coverage is provided by VIA
Rail, with a nationwide network
offering the chance to travel
right across the country from
Vancouver to Halifax – via Jasper,
Toronto and Montréal - in 6 days.
Shorter routes from Winnipeg
to Churchill or Jasper to Prince
Rupert offer the chance to kick
back and relax, making the
journey from A to B part of your
overall holiday experience.
Ferry Journeys
The off-shore islands of British
Columbia are best explored by
sea, and BC Ferries provide the
ideal way to do this. Enjoy a
scenic crossing from Vancouver
to Victoria or explore Canada’s
beautiful Inside Passage.
Travelling by ferry offers
spectacular scenery with the
chance to enjoy spotting marine
wildlife as you go.

Where To Stay
Choose from a fairytale castle in Québec, or rustic log cabin in the heart of
the Canadian Rockies mountain wilderness; stay with cowboys on a working
ranch, at a cosy BB or in a remote lighthouse on a rugged coastline. Mix
and match your overnight stays to suit your own tastes and budget. Visit our
website to view a selection of accommodation options throughout Canada.
What To Do
Canada boasts a range of unmissable experiences – some of our favourites
include boarding an Ice Explorer onto the Athabasca Glacier, a close
encounter with Niagara Falls on a Maid of the Mist boat trip, and searching
for orca on a Vancouver Island whale watching cruise. During the winter
months a host of new opportunities become available – try dog-sledding
and snowshoeing through a winter wonderland, look out for polar bears on
the Arctic Tundra, and even spot the magical northern lights.
The Next Step…
Once you have a rough idea of your ‘must-
do’ experiences, preferred destinations and
