Our Unique Pledge
Why you should book with the experts...
The Specialists
We are one of the UK’s leading
specialist tour operators and
have been so for nearly 30
years. We know what makes
a good holiday and are
passionate about each of our
destinations. Expert knowledge
combines with a commitment to
personal service and a passion
for all our destinations.
Our New Zealand team know the
regions of this beautiful country
well, are accredited Tourism New
Zealand Kiwi specialists, and are
on hand to offer help and advice
throughout the
booking process
– in person, by
telephone or by
email, whichever is
your preference.
This includes booking your
complete holiday package,
from flights and stopovers to all
your ground arrangements.
Value for money
Contrary to popular belief, it is
usually less expensive to book
through a tour operator than to
book direct on the internet – and
far more straightforward! Due
to our longstanding relationships
with a variety of partners we can
secure rooms at key hotels at
the busiest times, with excellent
rates and very often special
offers too. When you book with
us you’ll know exactly what is
included and what’s not - we
don’t believe in hidden extras. We
make regular checks to ensure
our prices remain competitive.
Price promise
In the unlikely event that you
should find the same holiday
arrangements elsewhere at a
lower price, our ‘price promise’
means we will do our best to
improve on it. But bear in mind,
sometimes arrangements which
appear the same can be very
different so we ask that you
forward the details of your offer
to our team, either by post or
email (pricechallenge@discover-
the-world.co.uk) and we shall
be in touch very quickly!
No surcharges
Once you have booked a holiday
with Discover the World, and we
have confirmed it, there will be
no further increases regardless
of what happens with Pound
Sterling, world oil prices and
taxes. There are no exceptions
and if you are considering
travelling with an alternative
operator you might want to
ensure you read their small print!
We believe in value for money, excellent customer service and a personal touch when planning your
holiday and our friendly, knowledgeable and experienced team is on hand to help you every step of the
way. At Discover the World your holiday is as important to us from the time you first get in touch, to the
moment you return home.

Booking independently – an informed choice
Your money and customer
rights are protected
A key benefit of booking with
a UK-based specialist operator
is that you are covered by very
stringent British travel industry
regulations and UK legislation
throughout your holiday. Our
air holiday packages are ATOL
protected by the Civil Aviation
Authority. Through our AITO
(Association of Independent
Tour Operators) bond, we also
offer 100% financial protection
for non-flight inclusive holidays,
ensuring that all money paid
to us is protected no matter
what. We are also members of
ABTA The Travel Association.
(formerly the Association
of British Travel Agents).
Travel disruption
We are proud of our excellent
reputation for looking after our
clients, without question, should
the unexpected occur. Our ‘Travel
Disruption Charter’ offers a simple
and transparent guarantee.
Our team of dedicated travel
consultants will do everything
possible to rearrange your trip
should it be cancelled or if your
outward flights(s) cannot operate
within 24 hours of the scheduled
departure time due to a range
of natural events. If it is not
possible to re-arrange your trip,
you will receive a refund of the
trip cost you have paid to us.
When you are on holiday, if it
becomes necessary to alter or
reroute your itinerary, we will
make these arrangements at no
additional cost to you. In the
event your scheduled return
flights(s) are cancelled and it
is necessary to remain in your
destination, we will provide
you with accommodation and
meals until such time that
we or the airline can make
arrangements to return you
home as soon as possible. For full
terms and conditions just give
us a call or visit our website.
Reliability
We select our travel partners
very carefully, based on the
highest levels of service, value
and quality and we constantly
monitor their commitment
to customer satisfaction.
Travel information
Once a booking is confirmed we
will supply detailed literature, such
as a handy Road Atlas for our
self-drive holidays, which will be
ready on arrival in New Zealand.
Flexible pricing
In this brochure you will find an
indication of the lowest price
for each holiday at the time
of going to press. Up-to-date
pricing is available on our website
or can be obtained by calling
our team of travel specialists.
Looking after you
during your holiday
and when you return
If there are any issues during
your holiday, our 24hr assistance
service is just a phone call away.
And in most destinations, the
aid of local agents and partners
give you added peace of mind.
This commitment to you does
not end when you step off
the aircraft; whether you have
general feedback, want to
discuss any aspect of your trip,
recommend a restaurant, or share
an unforgettable moment you’ve
captured on your camera then
we’re happy to hear from you.
In this day and age, it may be
quite tempting to try and book
your holiday independently
using the Internet rather than
the services of a specialist tour
operator. This is of course an
option, but be aware of the
possible pitfalls and the potential
false economy in doing so.
There are various factors to
take into consideration, for
example assurance of quality
and standards, what happens
if the airline changes or cancels
your flights, or the hotel room
you thought you had booked
becomes ‘overbooked’? What
financial or consumer protection
do you have and what happens
if something goes wrong on
holiday? You may also find that
by the time you have booked
all your arrangements there is
little or no cost saving and you
could well end up paying a
lot more. Whilst of course you
have a choice, these are things
to take into consideration but
by booking through us we can
take the worry out of these
eventualities by offering quality
products, fully bonded and
financially protected holidays
with trusted ‘package holiday’
customer protection, along with
peace of mind that with 24/7
round-the-clock support, we are
only ever a phone call away.

Planning Your Holiday
There really is so much to see and experience on these stunning islands that in order for you to get the most
out of your holiday to New Zealand a little planning is an essential requirement, especially when your time is
so rarely unlimited!
Tailor-made service
We know New Zealand in depth and will tailor make any itinerary to suit
your requirements. However, only you know exactly what you want from
your holiday, so to help us create your perfect itinerary, simply let us have an
idea of your interests, timescale and budget and we’ll take care of the rest.
When to go
New Zealand’s glorious landscapes and range of activities can be enjoyed
at any time of year – each of its four distinct seasons, opposite to our
own, have their own appeal. Summer (Dec to Feb) often brings long,
warm days and mild nights, while the winter months (Jun to Aug) are
likely to offer spectacular snowy vistas and are the best time to combine
with a Pacific island stopover. The shoulder seasons of autumn (Mar to
May) and spring (Sep to Nov) are naturally warmer than winter, yet are
less busy than the summer months.
Where to stay
We can mix and match any style of accommodation, from motels and
farmstays to boutique hotels, elegant B&B’s and idyllic lodges.
Activities & excursions
The perfect enhancement to any itinerary there are certain activities or sights
that we feel just shouldn’t be missed. You’ll find a selection of these in our
Top 10 Highlights and itineraries or ask our team for further ideas.
Getting around
Self-drive or escorted?
New Zealand is an easy and friendly country to travel around independently
with an excellent network of roads, bus, rail, and air services. Probably the
most popular method of touring the country is by car or motorhome. If,
however, you prefer to travel with a guide in the company of like-minded
people, we can offer a range of small or large group escorted holidays.
“We would have no hesitation in
recommending Discover the World to
friends and acquaintances and indeed
we are doing just that.”
Brian Rae, Tailor-Made Self Drive

Hike – Tongariro
Alpine Crossing
Acknowledged as one of the
finest one-day walks in the
world, hike the Tongariro Alpine
Crossing in the company of a
local guide. Rust red craters,
black deserts and cobalt blue
and jade green lakes make these
landscapes amongst the most
colourful in New Zealand.
Kiwi watch – in the wild!
Stewart Island
New Zealand’s hidden gem, Stewart
Island, is home to the brown kiwi and
is the only place in New Zealand where
these timid nocturnal birds can be
reliably seen in the wild. Enjoy a guided
tour of Ulva Island Nature Reserve during
your stay to experience many rare and
endangered native birds.
Maori culture – Hawke’s Bay
Experience a wonderfully authentic Maori
welcome at Waimarama, just south of
Hastings in the Hawke’s Bay region. This is
a great way to experience a powhiri (Maori
welcome) and Marae visit.
Heli Hike the Glaciers – Fox Glacier
Combine the excitement of a guided hike on the
Fox Glacier with the thrill of a helicopter flight.
Visit ice caves and other wonderful formations
below the upper ice fall.
Volcano! – White Island
New Zealand’s only active
marine volcano lies off the Bay
of Plenty near Whakatane. A
trip here by boat or helicopter
is a must, as is a guided tour of
this incredible landscape and the
volcanic energy that is harnessed
beneath the ground, unleashing
steam fumeroles, bubbling mud
and sulphur vents.
Self-drive NZ – by car,
motorhome or motorbike!
New Zealand is the perfect country for a self-
drive holiday whether you choose to travel by car,
Motorhome or Motorbike (Harley Davidsons are a
popular choice). Now you can even travel by Segway!
Incredible scenery and open roads mean you can
experience NZ at your own pace.
Whale watch – Kaikoura
Experience the thrill of giant sperm
whale watching by boat or more
comfortably from the air. Towering
snow-covered peaks fall to the ocean
here and offshore a deep undersea
canyon attracts an extraordinary
abundance of marine life.

Getting Around New Zealand
How you choose to travel around New Zealand is a question of both preference and time. An excellent
network of roads makes either driving or coach-travel the most popular options and are complemented by
efficient air, ferry and rail services.
Self-drive
The main advantage of having
your own vehicle is the freedom
to travel as you please and at
your own pace. This is especially
true if you hire a motorhome,
when quite literally the whole
country becomes your potential
lodging. In a land where every
bend in the road seems to bring
another amazing view to savour,
such independence is truly
appealing for couples, friends
and families alike.
InterIslander ferry
Operating daily between
Wellington and Picton, the
Interislander Ferry crossing takes
3 hours with 3 to 5 sailings daily.
There is no need to take your car
on the ferry. You simply leave it
at the ferry depot, check-in your
baggage and pick up another
vehicle on arrival. However, for
motorhome hire, you will need
to take your vehicle on the ferry.
Pre-booking is essential during
peak times.
Domestic flights
Flying is a great way to travel
between the main centres in
New Zealand if you are pressed
for time or should you wish to
focus on specific regions. Air New
Zealand is the largest domestic
operator offering economy
class flights to 26 destinations
throughout the country. In
addition, a number of domestic
flight routes are offered by Qantas
and both airlines also operate
Trans Tasman services between
New Zealand and Australia.

Rail journeys
Train journeys are both leisurely
and scenic and can add a
delightful variant to your self-drive
itinerary. On the North Island, The
Overlander is a glorious journey
through the interior, travelling
between Auckland and the capital
Wellington. On the South Island,
The Coastal Pacific runs through
Marlborough wine country
from Picton to Christchurch via
Blenheim and Kaikoura and ties in
with the InterIslander ferry service.
The TranzAlpine is regarded
as the country’s finest rail
journey and operates between
Christchurch and Greymouth
across the Southern Alps.
Steam Train Journeys - the ideal
option for both rail enthusiasts
and travellers looking for
something just a little different.
Escorted touring
If you wish to travel as part of
a guided tour there are many
options available from small
group touring with approximately
16 to 20 passengers, as well as
larger groups of 40 to 50.
Special interest
You can do just about every
kind of outdoor activity in New
Zealand – including golf, fly-
fishing, cycling, skiing, skydiving,
hiking and walking: New Zealand
has 9 Great Walks! We can
also arrange weddings and
honeymoons and can design
any trip to suit your individual
preferences and interests.
“There’s no better way to roam than
in a motorhome. Not only do they
offer flexibility and self-sufficiency,
most models offer levels of comfort
undreamt of in the days of the old VW
camper van.”

Northland
Twin Coasts - Maritime - Historical Roots
Stretching 350km north from Auckland, Northland is New Zealand’s only sub-
tropical region and with its above average sunshine record and glorious beaches,
it is popular with locals as well as visitors. Winters are mild and citrus fruits and
even bananas grow among its gentle hills and valleys.
To the east, on the sheltered
Pacific coast, is the renowned
Bay of Islands where the Treaty
of Waitangi was signed in 1840,
in which the Maori chieftains
sealed their future alongside that
of the ‘pakeha’, the whites. Today
the Treaty House, Maori Meeting
House and 100ft long war canoe
compete for visitor attention with
the natural attractions. Gorgeous
white sand beaches dissolve
into a turquoise sea studded with
many islands that can be readily
explored on a scenic cruise,
dolphin swimming excursion or
big game fishing trip.
The small town of Paihia is a
favourite place to stay, being
centrally located and within
a short distance of Waitangi
Reserve, while historic Russell
is smaller and more peaceful.
Thrashed by the Tasman Sea, the
windswept west coast couldn’t be
more different, its long beaches
backed by dunes and forests of
ancient kauri trees.
The oceans meet at New
Zealand’s northernmost accessible
point, Cape Reinga, a volcanic
outcrop at the end of Ninety
Mile Beach. Specially equipped
coaches drive along this superb
stretch of sand and surf,
following the trail of the ‘spirits’.
Legend has it that the departing
spirits of the Maori head north
along this route to leap off the
headland into the sea.

Pacific Coast &
Thermal Explorer
Beaches - Wineries - Maori Heritage & Culture
- Geysers - Volcanoes
The Pacific Coast region includes the verdant Coromandel, famed for its scarlet-blooming pohutukawa
trees, glorious white sand beaches, secret coves, and luxuriant rainforest. Just south of this sits the varied
landscapes of the Thermal Explorer region, renowned for its Maori culture and geothermal Rotorua.
New Zealand’s Coromandel
Peninsula is renowned for its
beautiful coastal scenery, wonderful
beaches and its rich tradition of
gold mining. The scenic Bay of
Plenty, with its golden beaches and
kiwi and citrus orchards, extends
over 200km in a great arc from
the Coromandel to the East Cape.
Along the coast is the lively port of
Tauranga and Whakatane, the
base for trips to the nature reserve
of Whale Island and volcanic White
Island. Here hissing steam and
sulphurous gas clouds escape from
a desolate crater.
Long and picturesque coastal
roads lead to the country’s most
easterly city, Gisborne, which
is the first in the world to see
the dawn of a new day. Further
south, Hawke’s Bay is the second
largest wine-producing region. It
is here that New Zealand’s most
unusual city, Napier, was rebuilt
in Art Deco style following a
devastating earthquake in 1931.
In the geographic heart of New
Zealand’s North Island, the
immensely varied landscapes of
this acclaimed region encompass
fertile farmlands, snow-capped
volcanoes, steaming geothermal
fields and crystal clear trout filled
lakes. The main highlight of the
region, Rotorua, has become one
of the most visited places in the
country famous for mud pools,
spouting geysers, redwood forests
and scenic trails for walking and
cycling. The fertile Waikato is
home to world-class gardens,
the Hobbiton Movie Set and the
glowworm caves of Waitomo.
Lake Taupo is another of the
region’s hot spots and is peppered
with geothermal areas as well as
the mighty Huka Falls. And in the
Tongariro National Park, the
twin volcanoes of Tongariro and
Ruapehu display rust red craters,
black deserts and cobalt blue lakes
and are popular with skiers and
hikers alike.

Rural Landscapes - Surf Highway -
Heritage & Nature - Culture - Boutique Wineries
New Zealand’s capital city of Wellington is renowned for its arts and culture as well as its proximity to
nature. Here you can experience culinary delights and the world class wines New Zealand is famed for.
Just north of here, the Western North Island region takes visitors off the beaten track and offers a
wealth of natural wonders begging to be explored.
Taranaki is the North Island’s
“fin”, a cape that extends
out into the wild Tasman Sea.

Mt Taranaki. Running between

area’s pioneering history.
Majestic Mt Taranaki dominates
the landscape, rising to over
2500m. At its foot lies the port of

Park, a favourite with hikers.
The Whanganui River was once
the main ‘highway’ inland for
paddle steamers and today, river
trips still offer the easiest access
to this vast region of untouched
forest. The poignant ‘Bridge to
Nowhere’ is a reminder of the
pioneers’ struggle with nature.
Nestled between a stunning
natural harbour and the forested
hills of the Rimutaka and Tararua
Ranges lies New Zealand’s vibrant
capital – Wellington. Fascinating
and friendly it is renowned for
its cafes, bars, restaurants and
museums, including Te Papa, the
innovative National Museum.
An hour’s drive north sits
the Wairarapa, famous for
producing fine Pinot Noir in its
Martinborough vineyards, as well
as being home to Pukaha Mount
Bruce National Wildlife Centre.
Also a short drive from
Wellington is the Kapiti Coast,

Dunedin & Southland
Nature - Pristine Wilderness - Heritage
With an abundance of natural wonders that includes some of the best wildlife
viewing in the country the South Island’s southern tip can also lay claim to the
most interesting architecture in the elegant and stately city of Dunedin. Framed
by a magnificent harbour the city is the main centre in the region.
Boosted by riches from the 1861
gold rush, Dunedin grew from
an isolated outpost to a bastion
of European culture, whose
architecture could be equally
at home in Edinburgh. With
New Zealand’s oldest university
and a thriving youth culture and
rock music scene, abundant
pubs and cafes, this is the place
for lively nightlife as well.
North and South of the city, the
rugged coast is peppered with
unusual geological formations,
sheltered sandy bays and
sheer cliffs, including those
of the Catlins, a vast forest
and coastal reserve, popular
with outdoor enthusiasts.
Not surprisingly, the region’s
wildlife is a big draw, with
onshore colonies of penguins
and albatross on the scenic
Otago Peninsula, which also
boasts dazzling rhododendron
gardens at Glenfalloch. For rail
enthusiasts, the 77km Taieri
Gorge Railway ranks among
the world’s great rail journeys.
Invercargill, New Zealand’s
southernmost city also has a
marked Scottish character
and its streets echo the
names of highland rivers.
Ferries depart from the
nearby port of Bluff for
the hour-long crossing to
Stewart Island, most of
which now comprises
Rakiura National Park.

New Zealand Touring Options
Discover the World offer a range of options for your holiday to New Zealand – from Budget to mid-range
or Superior touring, specifically designed to suit every budget!
We are aware that for many, New Zealand is
now a costly destination to visit, both in terms
of airfare and day to day living expenses. We
are committed to making this spectacular
country, and one of our personal favourites,
as affordable as possible.
The increased cost of airfares and airport taxes
is a significant factor in holiday planning.
Discover the World work with all the major
airlines, including a number of low-cost
carriers, to enable us to offer our clients the
most cost-effective and competitive airfares
on the market.
Over the last few years the Pound sterling has
weakened against the New Zealand dollar,
having a much more significant financial
impact than ever before. With this in mind
we are delighted to introduce a new series of
“affordable” packages. These packages allow
you to be completely self-sufficient during
your holiday, whether travelling independently
by Motorhome, or by rental car.
Our Motorhome itineraries allow you the
flexibility to travel around New Zealand
freely, at a pace to suit, and to self-cater
as you do so. We also have a number of
self-drive itineraries which feature a range of
accommodation at a very affordable cost to
suit your individual budget.

Wildlife
Ancient History
Australia’s indigenous people represent
the world’s oldest living culture, with
a history spanning back 50,000 years.
Dreamtime stories and ancient rock
art provide a fascinating backdrop to
present day Australia.
Marine Magic
Australia’s extensive coastline
provides easy access to both the
Great Barrier Reef and Ningaloo
Reef, home to vivid coral gardens
and an abundance of marine
wildlife. Swim with whale-sharks,
take a helicopter in search of
the mighty blue whale, or cruise
among dolphins and dugongs.
Split by three time zones and the tropic of Capricorn, Australia is a vast island nation with
a fascinating indigenous history and strong European ties. Here you will find vibrant and

untouched coastlines.
Australia’s iconic landmarks both man-made and natural are

Great Rail Journeys
Experience the world’s longest
straight stretch of railway with a
trip on the Indian Pacific across
the vast Nullarbor Plain, or cross
Australia north to south from
Darwin to Adelaide – both are
epic journeys through an epic
Australian landscape.
With colourful coral, turquoise
seas and lush green rainforests,
Australia’s colours are truly
dazzling. Perhaps nowhere more
so than the striking landscapes
of the Outback, where vivid red
earth is punctuated by lone white
gum trees reaching into the
endless blue sky.
Outback Luxury
Australia offers its own unique
take on luxury in the wilderness,
with safari style tented properties
and working cattle ranches
offering top level service, gourmet
dining, fine wines and views to
cherish for a lifetime. Remarkable Rocks
Uluru (Ayers Rock) surely has to be the
world’s best-known rock, but don’t
overlook Australia’s other geological
wonders. There’s the aptly named
Devil’s Marbles, stripey Bungle Bungles,
other-worldly Pinnacles and the
remarkable Remarkable Rocks!
A Taste of Australia
A diverse range of influences have
shaped Australia’s cuisine, with fresh
produce, a multicultural society and
traditional ‘bush tucker’ combining
to create unique and innovative
menus. Numerous vineyards can
be found throughout the southern
states and are well worth a visit.
On the Road
Travel at your own pace by motorhome or car,
and take in Australia’s scenic highlights. Drive the
famous Great Ocean Road, meander through the
forests of Margaret River, explore rural Tasmania
or tackle the remote Gibb River Road.
Dazzling Colour
Sydney Icons
Instantly recognizable, Sydney Harbour just wouldn’t be the same
without its twin landmarks. See the city from a different perspective

iconic Sydney Opera House.

Australia
Australia is a vast and diverse land of wide open spaces, captivating red desert, dense rainforest,
unique wildlife, cosmopolitan cities and endless beaches. Every state and territory offers its own unique
attractions, climate and landscapes. Some of the most iconic landmarks in the world can be found here,
from the Sydney Opera House to the awe-inspiring Ayers Rock, with the spectacular Great Barrier Reef
providing a chance to explore a colourful marine-world too. From the tropical north to the temperate
climes of the far south, wherever you choose to visit you can be assured of a warm, down-to-earth
welcome and a wealth of experiences and memories.
New South Wales
A must for any first-time visit to Australia,
NSW boasts golden beaches, lush
rainforests, and an impressive array of
national parks. It is also home to lively
Sydney, the nearby scenic Blue Mountains
and the countless wineries of the Hunter
Valley. Further afield, laid-back Byron Bay
offers complete contrast with its stunning
sandy beaches.
Queensland
Offering endless sunny beaches, inland
mountains and extensive forests,
Queensland is Australia’s most-visited state.
Explore Brisbane or Cairns before venturing
further afield. A strong Aboriginal heritage
permeates northern Queensland whilst the
Daintree is the world’s oldest rainforest.
But the biggest draw to Queensland is the
unmissable Great Barrier Reef.
Northern Territory
The NT is home to Uluru (Ayers Rock),
arguably the most evocative of Australia’s
landmarks, as well as the Top End
highlights of Darwin and Kakadu and
Litchfield National Parks. With a rust-red
outback, a wealth of Aboriginal culture,
endemic wildlife and unique geology,
this territory offers the quintessential
Australian experience.
Western Australia
WA features epic outback, deep green
forests and an endless coastline of
memorable sunsets. White gum trees line
the striking red gorges of Karijini, whilst
Perth provides a gateway to the wineries
of the south. To the north marine wildlife
awaits at Ningaloo Reef. Remote and
immense, WA offers true adventure.

Victoria
Located in the south-east of Australia, Victoria’s
coastline comprises excellent surf beaches and unique
limestone rock formations, whilst inland the Grampians
provide spectacular views and diverse native wildlife.
From the wineries of the Yarra Valley to the penguins
of Phillip Island, from the world-renowned Great Ocean
Road to the city of Melbourne, there is something for
everyone in Victoria.
South Australia
Adelaide’s elegant charm provides the gateway to
South Australia, and is within easy reach of the state’s
highlights. The nearby Barossa Valley is another of
Australia’s key wine-producing regions, whilst inland the
Flinders Ranges provide a taste of the outback. Here you
will find incredible scenery and an array of animal life,
but for a truly close encounter with Australia’s unique
indigenous wildlife a visit to Kangaroo Island is a must.
Tasmania
From the gateway cities of Hobart and Launceston
explore rugged Cradle Mountain or the deserted
beaches of the Freycinet Peninsula. See an abundance
of unique wildlife, including the eponymous Tassie Devil,
and discover a fascinating history of convicts, miners,
piners and Antarctic exploration. Tasmania is one of
the world’s most mountainous islands and the ideal
destination for hikers, wildlife lovers and birdwatchers.

  • 3. discover-the-world.co.uk/newzealandbrochure 3talk to the experts 01737 218 800 © Chris McLennan Our Unique Pledge Why you should book with the experts... The Specialists We are one of the UK’s leading specialist tour operators and have been so for nearly 30 years. We know what makes a good holiday and are passionate about each of our destinations. Expert knowledge combines with a commitment to personal service and a passion for all our destinations. Our New Zealand team know the regions of this beautiful country well, are accredited Tourism New Zealand Kiwi specialists, and are on hand to offer help and advice throughout the booking process – in person, by telephone or by email, whichever is your preference. This includes booking your complete holiday package, from flights and stopovers to all your ground arrangements. Value for money Contrary to popular belief, it is usually less expensive to book through a tour operator than to book direct on the internet – and far more straightforward! Due to our longstanding relationships with a variety of partners we can secure rooms at key hotels at the busiest times, with excellent rates and very often special offers too. When you book with us you’ll know exactly what is included and what’s not - we don’t believe in hidden extras. We make regular checks to ensure our prices remain competitive. Price promise In the unlikely event that you should find the same holiday arrangements elsewhere at a lower price, our ‘price promise’ means we will do our best to improve on it. But bear in mind, sometimes arrangements which appear the same can be very different so we ask that you forward the details of your offer to our team, either by post or email (pricechallenge@discover- the-world.co.uk) and we shall be in touch very quickly! No surcharges Once you have booked a holiday with Discover the World, and we have confirmed it, there will be no further increases regardless of what happens with Pound Sterling, world oil prices and taxes. There are no exceptions and if you are considering travelling with an alternative operator you might want to ensure you read their small print! We believe in value for money, excellent customer service and a personal touch when planning your holiday and our friendly, knowledgeable and experienced team is on hand to help you every step of the way. At Discover the World your holiday is as important to us from the time you first get in touch, to the moment you return home.
  • 4. 4 For our office opening hours please visit our website Booking independently – an informed choice Your money and customer rights are protected A key benefit of booking with a UK-based specialist operator is that you are covered by very stringent British travel industry regulations and UK legislation throughout your holiday. Our air holiday packages are ATOL protected by the Civil Aviation Authority. Through our AITO (Association of Independent Tour Operators) bond, we also offer 100% financial protection for non-flight inclusive holidays, ensuring that all money paid to us is protected no matter what. We are also members of ABTA The Travel Association. (formerly the Association of British Travel Agents). Travel disruption We are proud of our excellent reputation for looking after our clients, without question, should the unexpected occur. Our ‘Travel Disruption Charter’ offers a simple and transparent guarantee. Our team of dedicated travel consultants will do everything possible to rearrange your trip should it be cancelled or if your outward flights(s) cannot operate within 24 hours of the scheduled departure time due to a range of natural events. If it is not possible to re-arrange your trip, you will receive a refund of the trip cost you have paid to us. When you are on holiday, if it becomes necessary to alter or reroute your itinerary, we will make these arrangements at no additional cost to you. In the event your scheduled return flights(s) are cancelled and it is necessary to remain in your destination, we will provide you with accommodation and meals until such time that we or the airline can make arrangements to return you home as soon as possible. For full terms and conditions just give us a call or visit our website. Reliability We select our travel partners very carefully, based on the highest levels of service, value and quality and we constantly monitor their commitment to customer satisfaction. Travel information Once a booking is confirmed we will supply detailed literature, such as a handy Road Atlas for our self-drive holidays, which will be ready on arrival in New Zealand. Flexible pricing In this brochure you will find an indication of the lowest price for each holiday at the time of going to press. Up-to-date pricing is available on our website or can be obtained by calling our team of travel specialists. Looking after you during your holiday and when you return If there are any issues during your holiday, our 24hr assistance service is just a phone call away. And in most destinations, the aid of local agents and partners give you added peace of mind. This commitment to you does not end when you step off the aircraft; whether you have general feedback, want to discuss any aspect of your trip, recommend a restaurant, or share an unforgettable moment you’ve captured on your camera then we’re happy to hear from you. In this day and age, it may be quite tempting to try and book your holiday independently using the Internet rather than the services of a specialist tour operator. This is of course an option, but be aware of the possible pitfalls and the potential false economy in doing so. There are various factors to take into consideration, for example assurance of quality and standards, what happens if the airline changes or cancels your flights, or the hotel room you thought you had booked becomes ‘overbooked’? What financial or consumer protection do you have and what happens if something goes wrong on holiday? You may also find that by the time you have booked all your arrangements there is little or no cost saving and you could well end up paying a lot more. Whilst of course you have a choice, these are things to take into consideration but by booking through us we can take the worry out of these eventualities by offering quality products, fully bonded and financially protected holidays with trusted ‘package holiday’ customer protection, along with peace of mind that with 24/7 round-the-clock support, we are only ever a phone call away. • 8. Getting Around New Zealand How you choose to travel around New Zealand is a question of both preference and time. An excellent network of roads makes either driving or coach-travel the most popular options and are complemented by efficient air, ferry and rail services. Self-drive The main advantage of having your own vehicle is the freedom to travel as you please and at your own pace. This is especially true if you hire a motorhome, when quite literally the whole country becomes your potential lodging. In a land where every bend in the road seems to bring another amazing view to savour, such independence is truly appealing for couples, friends and families alike. InterIslander ferry Operating daily between Wellington and Picton, the Interislander Ferry crossing takes 3 hours with 3 to 5 sailings daily. There is no need to take your car on the ferry. You simply leave it at the ferry depot, check-in your baggage and pick up another vehicle on arrival. However, for motorhome hire, you will need to take your vehicle on the ferry. Pre-booking is essential during peak times. Domestic flights Flying is a great way to travel between the main centres in New Zealand if you are pressed for time or should you wish to focus on specific regions. Air New Zealand is the largest domestic operator offering economy class flights to 26 destinations throughout the country. In addition, a number of domestic flight routes are offered by Qantas and both airlines also operate Trans Tasman services between New Zealand and Australia. © Rest New Zealand © Bularangi Motorbikes 8 Why choose Discover the World - see page 3 For our office opening hours please visit our website

Winters are mild and citrus fruits and even bananas grow among its gentle hills and valleys. To the east, on the sheltered Pacific coast, is the renowned Bay of Islands where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840, in which the Maori chieftains sealed their future alongside that of the ‘pakeha’, the whites. Gorgeous white sand beaches dissolve into a turquoise sea studded with many islands that can be readily explored on a scenic cruise, dolphin swimming excursion or big game fishing trip. The small town of Paihia is a favourite place to stay, being centrally located and within a short distance of Waitangi Reserve, while historic Russell is smaller and more peaceful. • 22. 22 Why choose Discover the World – see page 3 For our office opening hours please visit our website Southern Lakes Lakes & Fiords - Mountains - Adventure This picturesque southern corner of New Zealand has achieved almost legendary status for its superb scenery and range of adrenaline-charged activities, including skiing. Stunning throughout the seasons, you don’t have to be a thrill-seeker to enjoy the resort towns of Queenstown, Wanaka and Te Anau. Queenstown, with its idyllic lakeside setting and sensational views of the Remarkables Range, offers just about every gravity-defying experience imaginable: bungy jumping, hang gliding, luging, parapenting and ballooning, as well as rafting the rapids of the Shotover River or racing its canyons in a jet boat. Historic steamboat cruises, a ride on the scenic Skyline Gondola and some great shopping and dining complete a stay in one of New Zealand’s most relaxing and pleasant towns. With all the charm but less of the hype, Lake Wanaka rivals Queenstown for scenery and adventure, with activities such as mountain biking, canyoning, rock climbing, sky diving and jet boating. Mirrored in the lake’s placid waters is the incredibly scenic backdrop of Mt. Aspiring and the Southern Alps. Quieter, but equally beautiful, Te Anau is famed for its glow worm caves, and is the gateway to the serene landscapes of Fiordland National Park. Nowhere else in the country is there such a concentration of mouth-watering scenery. The fiords of Milford and Doubtful Sound cut deep into the heart of the national park, providing a rich haven for dolphins, seals and countless birds and an awe-inspiring venue for kayaking or cruising. Waterfalls stream down the slopes of the steep mountains and are surrounded by lush forests. • 24. 24 Why choose Discover the World – see page 3 For our office opening hours please visit our website Dunedin & Southland Nature - Pristine Wilderness - Heritage With an abundance of natural wonders that includes some of the best wildlife viewing in the country the South Island’s southern tip can also lay claim to the most interesting architecture in the elegant and stately city of Dunedin. Framed by a magnificent harbour the city is the main centre in the region. Boosted by riches from the 1861 gold rush, Dunedin grew from an isolated outpost to a bastion of European culture, whose architecture could be equally at home in Edinburgh. With New Zealand’s oldest university and a thriving youth culture and rock music scene, abundant pubs and cafes, this is the place for lively nightlife as well. North and South of the city, the rugged coast is peppered with unusual geological formations, sheltered sandy bays and sheer cliffs, including those of the Catlins, a vast forest and coastal reserve, popular with outdoor enthusiasts. Not surprisingly, the region’s wildlife is a big draw, with onshore colonies of penguins and albatross on the scenic Otago Peninsula, which also boasts dazzling rhododendron gardens at Glenfalloch. For rail enthusiasts, the 77km Taieri Gorge Railway ranks among the world’s great rail journeys. Invercargill, New Zealand’s southernmost city also has a marked Scottish character and its streets echo the names of highland rivers. Ferries depart from the nearby port of Bluff for the hour-long crossing to Stewart Island, most of which now comprises Rakiura National Park. Sandy beaches and lush rainforest form the landscape, providing the natural habitat of the kiwi making it one of the best places to observe this bird in the wild.
