Creating a Classroom Literacy Profile By: Michelle Cahoe
Collaborating Teachers Michelle Cahoe 5th grade teacher - Language Arts - Social Studies Focus on low/struggling readers Amanda Webster Special Education Teacher 3-5 Reading Specialist Tier 2 and 3 Interventionist
Setting Yorktown Elementary School is located just outside of Muncie. The school enrolled 494 third through fifth grade students during the 2009-2010 school year.
Assessments These are mandated by the school corporation. ,[object Object],	- given 3 times a year ,[object Object],	- given 4 times a year ,[object Object],	- given each spring
RtI Influences The school mandated assessments are used to place students in the 3 tiers of our RtI program. Tier 2 students are pulled for 30 minutes during grade level SSR time. Tier 3 students are pulled during SSR time and 3 days a week during specials. Tier 2 and 3 students also receive small group instruction in the classroom.
How to drive instruction We decided to look at what else we could use in the classroom to help drive our instruction. Information we could collect as a whole class on a more frequent basis. This information had to be quick and easy to collect.
Continued… Reading series Unit tests - given every 3-4 weeks Running Records - given every 2 weeks Teacher conferencing - every 2-3 weeks
Informal observation Students would be watched during small group, group work, and independent time. These notes would be kept in the CLP as well. Teachers could refer back to these notes for help with interventions and classroom instruction.
Storing the information We will be storing our CLP in a binder. The binder will be kept in the classroom. Print outs from the Basal unit tests and the Orchard tests will be added. Charts and spreadsheets may be added as needed by the teacher.
What now? Even though this information has been collected and has a place to be stored, what do we do with it? We will use this binder of information during our planning time every week to drive our instruction. This data will help with instruction both in the classroom and with RtI interventions.
Wrapping it up Information for the upcoming school year We are excited to start implementing the CLP this school year. We are both aware that this is an ever changing process that can and will change as the year goes along. This will be a great tool to use with the students, teachers, and parents to update student’s progress and drive our current instruction.
