Diversity
 The concept of diversity is based on individual acceptance and respect.
 It is an understanding that individuals are unique and different.
 A diverse workplace aims to create an inclusive culture that values uses the talents
of all its employees.

 Marital Status
 Religious
 Gender
 Ethnicity
 Race
 Physical Characteristics
 Personality Types
 Income
 Education
 Sexual Orientation
History of Diversity in the Workplace
 The 1964 Civil Rights Act made it illegal for organizations to engage in
employment practices that discriminated against employees on the basis of race,
color, religion, gender, national origin, age and disability.
 In 1965, Executive Order 11246 was passed requiring all government contractors
to take affirmative actions to overcome past patterns of exclusion and
discrimination
 These laws remain a part of the legal responsibilities under which organizations
abide by today.
Ways to Incorporate Diversity
 Businesses find ways to incorporate diversity into their workplaces without causing
major changes to the way their companies operate.
 Incorporating diversity practices in a workplace can include:
 Recruiting from diverse talent pools to make the company open to employees from
various backgrounds.
 Diversity may infused into advertising practices to ensure products and services are
targeted to all consumers who represent the target market, whether through print,
online, television or radio.
Managing Diversity
Managing Diversity is defined as "planning and implementing organizational systems
and practices to manage people so that the potential advantages of diversity are
maximized while its potential disadvantages are minimized," according to Taylor Cox
in Cultural Diversity in Organizations.
How to Manage Diversity in the Workplace
5 Steps for Successfully Managing Diversity
 Emphasize communication
 View employees as individuals
 Encourage employees to work in diverse groups
 Base decisions on objective criteria
 Be open-minded
Advantages of Diversity in the Workplace
 Maximize the productivity
 Enhance the creativity
 Increase the loyalty of employees
 Getting competitive advantage
 Improving decision making by providing different perspective on problems
 Satisfy diverse needs for customers
Diversity Training
 As diversity in the workforce grows at an amazing rate, more organizations are now focusing on
diversity in the workplace by emphasizing recruitment, selection, retention and training.
 Diversity training has 3 major objectives in the workplace:
 Increasing awareness about diversity issues.
 Reducing biases and stereotypes that deter from effective management.
 Change behaviors to help effectively manage a diverse workforce.
The Effects on Diversity Training
 With diversity training, employees have a great understanding of the value diversity, better
diversity management skills and more effective diversity related behaviors.
 After undergoing training, managers saw diversity related practices as more important than they
did prior to the training, and were more likely to positively engage in diversity related practices.

competitive edge and increasing work productivity.
 Most workplaces are made up of diverse cultures, so organizations need to learn
how to adapt to be successful.
