This document outlines the lesson flow and goals for levels 3 and 4 of a Japanese language mastery program.
Level 3 focuses on mastering individual sounds and phrases of 1-2 sentences. Lessons include warm-up exercises, working on a "sound focus", reciting phrases and sentences from pages 81-88, and practicing 2-3 speech samples. The goals are to say one phrase per breath, focus on accented sounds, and smoothly read sentences of 8-10 words.
Level 4 builds on this with conversations of natural speed, reciting passages and speech samples at a natural pace from memory. The goals are to properly pronounce sounds, express meaning instead of just reading, be consistent, and produce

2. Level 3 Goals (Sublevels are about
20 lessons each on average):
3A - One Phrase = One Breath; focus on accented sounds (4-5
words)
3B - Mastery Passages 81-88: Read each sentence smoothly
(8-10 words)
3C - Mastery Passages 81-88: Read the whole passage smoothly
without struggling. (Speed is not important here)
3. Focus
● Highlight focal points so the students know what they
studied in the session.
● Encourage students to identify the accented sounds
● Minimize time that any one student is silent.
● Ensure each student speaks as much as possible (again and
again until you/ they can point out the mistake)
● Exact mouth shapes are not so important if we can get them
to say the phrase or sentence naturally
● Focus on accuracy over fluency. If a student is saying the
phrase too quickly and making a lot of mistakes, get them to
slow down.
