Presentation to GLAM Wiki 2018 Conference, 5 November 2018, in Tel Aviv, Israel, by Douglas McCarthy and Andrea Wallace.

Started in March 2018, the Open GLAM survey examines how GLAMs make open access data – whether digital objects, metadata or text – available for re-use. It is an informal, crowdsourced and ongoing initiative developed through outreach to GLAM professionals, cultural organisations and people online.

It highlights the need for common practice and consistency in communicating open access effectively to users online.

  5. 5. Why we started the survey ● Information gap ○ Lack of up-to-date information on this topic ○ No ‘shared place’ to see/add relevant data ○ Perceived European & North American bias in the field; we are motivated to discover the global picture ● To develop a resource for ○ people who want to find & use open content or data ○ GLAMs exploring open access data & policy Open GLAM around the world: developing a global survey of open access policy and practice in the GLAM sector Andrea Wallace and Douglas McCarthy, CC BY

  20. 20. Some survey stats Of the 372 GLAMs in the survey today: 293 have a stated licence for metadata 65 lack a Wikidata entity 45 have Githubs 201 make data accessible via Europeana & 16 DDB APIs Open GLAM around the world: developing a global survey of open access policy and practice in the GLAM sector Andrea Wallace and Douglas McCarthy, CC BY
  21. 21. Policy vs practice ● The survey’s ‘Online Policy’ field links to the most relevant rights policy and terms of use information that GLAMs provide on their websites (when available), BUT - these pages are often generic and lacking in detail - GLAM policy statements are often conflicting, subject to change and do not expressly disclaim copyright Open GLAM around the world: developing a global survey of open access policy and practice in the GLAM sector Andrea Wallace and Douglas McCarthy, CC BY
