Few Myths and FactsSome people think tooth decay is just for childrenDid you know you are at risk your whole life?Untreated dental disease can lead to serious health problemssuch as infection, damage to bone or nerve and tooth lossDental infections that are left untreated can even spread to otherparts of the body and, in very rare cases, can be life threatening
Good news isDental disease is preventableYou can practice preventive dentistry on yourself by adopting these healthy habits:Always remember to brush your teeth twice a day, floss between teeth once a day, eat abalanced diet and limit between-meal snacks. And dont forget to schedule regular dental visits.By following a healthy dental routine and making smart food choices, you can lower your risk fortooth decay.
Healthy Habit No 1: BrushingBrushing your teeth is the cornerstone of any good oral hygiene routine. To keep your teeth and gums healthy, always be sure to brush your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled brush. The size and shape of your brush should fit your mouth allowing you to reach all areas easily. Also, don’t forget to replace your toothbrush every three or four months or sooner if thebristles are frayed.A worn toothbrush won’t do a good job of cleaning your teeth. Finally, make sure to use an IDA-accepted fluoride toothpaste. It makes no difference whetheryou choose a manual or powered toothbrush—just make sure to brush twice a day, every day!
The proper brushing technique isto:Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums.Move the brush back and forth gently in short (tooth-wide) strokes.Brush the outer surfaces, the inner surfaces, and the chewing surfaces of the teeth. To clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth, tilt the brush vertically and make several up-and-down strokes.Brush your tongue to remove bacteria and keep your breath fresh.
Healthy Habit No 2: FlossingFlossing goes hand in hand with brushing.By flossing once a day, you help to remove plaque from between your teeth in areas where thetoothbrush cant reach. This is extremely important because plaque that is not removed by brushing and flossing caneventually harden into calculus or tartar.Once tartar has formed, it can only be removed by a professional cleaning.
How to floss?Talk to your dentist about what types of oral care products will be most effective foryou. Look for products that contain the IDA Seal of Acceptance so you know theyhave been evaluated for safety and effectiveness.
Common Dental and Oral Problems Bad Breath Sore Bleeding Tongue Gums Oral and Dental Issues Plaque Ulcers and Tartars Crowding
Bad Breath (Halitosis) For the majority of people (85-90% of those who have bad breath halitosis), the single most frequent cause of bad breath problems are the bacterial that live in their mouth. Bad breath remains a taboo subject and most people realize that they cannot rely on their friends, work colleagues, partners to let them know when they smell the odor from their mouth. Most of your friends will avoid you rather than tell you about your breath for the fear that you may get upset. An extensive survey carried out by the British Dental Association some years ago found that bad breath was rated as the number 1 turn-off for everybody, no matter what their age or gender.
Periodontal Disease Periodontal disease, an infection of the teeth, gums, and bone that surrounds the teeth, is the number-one cause of adult tooth loss. It begins when plaque, a sticky film of food and bacteria, builds up on your teeth. If plaque isn’t removed, it hardens into calculus, also called tartar. The buildup of plaque and tartar dramatically increases the number of harmful bacteria in your mouth and can result in deepening spaces between the teeth and gums, called pockets. Bacteria trigger the body’s immune system to produce enzymes. These enzymes destroy the bone surrounding the teeth, which ultimately leads to tooth loss. Ultrasonic scaling removes calculus and reduces the number of harmful bacteria below the gum line. It is an important tool in the prevention and treatment of periodontal disease.
What is Orthodontics Orthodontics, formerly orthodontia is the first specialty of dentistry that is concerned with the study and treatment of improper bites, which may be a result of tooth irregularity, disproportionate jaw relationships, or both. Orthodontic treatment can focus on dental displacement only, or can deal with the control and modification of facial growth. In the latter case it is better defined as "dentofacial orthopaedics". Orthodontic treatment can be carried out for purely aesthetic reasons with regards to improving the general appearance of patients teeth. However, there are orthodontists who work on reconstructing the entire face rather than focusing exclusively on teeth.
