 Martin Seligman launched Positive
Psychology in 1998 when he became
President of the American Psychological
Association
 Positive Psychology identifies and studies the
factors that create well-being rather than at
cures for psychological illnesses
 It proposes to make people happier and
more fulfilled by using and developing their
strengths
 It is based on scientific research that has
been carried out through controlled
experiments and longitudinal studies
Signature Strength Exercise
1. Write a story about when you are at your best
2. Take the strengths survey
• http://www.authentichappiness.org
• Pay most attention to the order of your own strengths.
Were there any surprises for you?
• Next, take your five highest strengths one at a time and
ask yourself, “Is it a signature strength?”
3. Once you get back your VIA results, reread your stories
and look for examples of your strengths.
Use one of your check-ins to
discuss strengths
Defer to each person’s strengths in
conversations, coaching, and
meetings
Ask people what they enjoy in
their work
Consider yourself: What are your
strengths?
Complete the test
Get others to complete the test
• We spend a third of our adult
life in the workplace
• That amounts to 40 plus years
• The least we can do is to find
well-being in the work we
do.
Elements of Well-Being
• Positive emotions – happiness and life satisfaction
• Engagement – being completely absorbed in
activities
• Relationships – being authentically connected to
others
• Meaning – purposeful existence
• Achievement – a sense of accomplishment and
success
As a leader …
• Start your meetings with ‘win for the week’
• Say hello to people in the morning; and mean it!
• Take an interest in the people that work for you
• Say thank-you more
• Apologise when you have messed up
• Have encouraging conversations
• Create thinking time
• Debrief with their three questions: What went well?
What didn’t go well? What will we do next time?
As a person …
• Mindfulness & meditation
• Three positives for the day
• Write 10 gratitude statements every day
• Find time to exercise
• Make a To Do List
Complete the strengths test, encourage your team to do
the same, and have a conversation about this.

Take the strengths survey • http://www.authentichappiness.org • Pay most attention to the order of your own strengths. Were there any surprises for you? • Next, take your five highest strengths one at a time and ask yourself, “Is it a signature strength?” 3. Once you get back your VIA results, reread your stories and look for examples of your strengths.
