3. Regarding the 5G Heterogeneous Future Networks:
Internet of Things (IOT) Current Activities:
Working for IOT research project, we are treating the IOT Challenges, Approaches, M2M,
Challenges:
M2M networks with large number of heterogeneous devices concurrently access the channel require
management mechanisms to regulate initial network entry or bandwidth request.
Concurrent network accesses cause collision if the amount is significant large which cause traffic
congestion causing dead lock.
Human communications will encounter unnecessary traffic congestion and cannot access the
network.
M2M devices must be regulated in case of interfering human communications.
M2M devices with limited Energy sources need high energy efficient MAC protocol.
Approaches
We design a scalable hybrid MAC protocol incorporating with -persistent CSMA mechanism and
TDMA mechanism for heterogeneous M2M networks.
By defining different contending priorities, the protocol is able to allow the heterogeneous devices to
obtain hierarchical performances.
We report an incremental contention priority method to guarantee the access fairness of devices,
which failed to compete the transmission opportunities over time.
We identify the key design parameters to achieve maximum channel utility by considering the
contending priority as well as the trade-off between contending period and transmission period.
Cloud/SDN Current Activities:
Working with a research team for Cloud/SDN project.
Project Name: Cognitive Radio Cloud (CRC): Enabling a Collaborative Environment for Wireless
Communication and Networking Research.
Project Description:
The goal of this project is to build a Cognitive Radio Cloud (CRC) to enable a collaborative
environment for wireless communications research in general, and cognitive radio research in
particular, that eases the deployment and testing of protocols at different layers of the protocol stack.
The focus of the current phase is to build a wireless testbed that has a scalable and modular
architecture with full experimental protocol stack that enable web/remote access to the testbed to
facilitate communication and networking research experiments especially for Egyptian researchers
and practitioners. During the first phase, multiple SDR platforms connected to wifi-enabled mini-
desktops will be installed. Powerful servers will be used to host different front-end and back-end
testbed components. Different software and hardware components will be developed and installed to
enable the testbed planned features and functionalities. Some components may be implemented using
existing open source frameworks/tools/software for potential future integration with other worldwide
testbeds. However, several research challenges still need to be addressed including optimal utilization
of the testbed resources, non-conflict scheduling of parallel experiments, real-time measurements and
control for dynamic experiments, multi-testbed inter-operability, realistic mobility emulation and
management, malicious user detection, efficient operating system image swapping and transfer,
among others will be investigated in this project. Such a testbed will allow a wide set of applications
and will have a huge impact on different sectors of the society, not only in Egypt, but through the
region and internationally.
