JONATHAN SWIFT:(1667-1745)
⮚ Born in Dublin, though both his parents were English, his connection
with Ireland was to be maintained more or less closely till the day he
died. (Albert)
⮚ Anglo-Irish Satirist.
⮚ Author, Essayist, Poet, Political Pamphleteer.
⮚ Din of Central Petrich Church.-(In end of his life.)
⮚ Swift’s first notable work, THE BATTLE OF THE BOOKS, written at
this time but not published. It is published with his second famous
work “A TALE OF A TUB”. Both published in 1704.
⮚ The work brought him into notice as the most powerful satirist of the
age and he soon gave up his church to enter the strife of party
politics. (Long)
SYMBOLS USED IN NOVEL ‘A TALE OF A TUB’:

COAT: RELIGION
FATHER: GOD
PETER: ROMAN CATHOLICISM CHURCH
MARTIN: LUTHERANISM(KING MARTIN
LUTHER)(CATHARSIS)
JACK: CALVINISM(JOHN CALVIN)
FATHER’S WILL-
BIBLE
❖ The father's will represents the
Bible, which Swift regards as
Christianity's fundamental
instruction manual. Swift's claim in
A Tale of a Tub is that the Bible
should be consulted for basic,
immutable guidance on all Church
matter
❖ In their youth, the three brothers
exemplify this kind of Christianity.
The more closely the brothers
adhere to the prescriptions of the
will, the happier they seem to be
and the more peaceful their
consciences are.
❖ The sense of control, defined as the
belief that one masters, controls, and
shapes one’s own life, has been an
important topic within sociology in
general and social psychology in
particular, tracing back to theory of
alienated labor.
❖ The present study investigates how
religion is related to the sense of
control. The effects of religiosity on
the inner lives of individuals have
been a long-standing theme in
sociological analysis and theorizing.
COAT- RELIGION
Christain religion sects Hindu religion sects
-There is six sects
in christanity first
is,the Church of
the East, Oriental
Orthodoxy, Eastern
Orthodoxy, Roman
Catholicism,
Protestantism, and
Restorationism.
-Four major traditions are,
however, used in scholarly
studies: Vaishnavism,
Shaivism, Shaktism and
Smartism.
-Islam's two main sects,
Sunni and Shia.
-Sunni and Shia Muslims
have lived peacefully
together for centuries.They
pray at the same mosques.
-They share faith in the
Quran and the Prophet
Mohammed’s sayings and
perform similar prayers,
although they differ in
rituals and interpretation
of Islamic law.(“The Sunni-Shia Divide”)

MANIPULATION ON THE NAME OF RELIGION
FATHER-GOD
-The father of the three brothers, a
representation of God, appears
only briefly at the very beginning of
the story. His will, which the
brothers interpret in increasingly
tortured and insincere ways,
symbolizes the Bible. (“A Tale of a Tub Symbols”)
-Here in this father is not alive and his
son’s are not able to see their father.
- In same way God is there
but it is still questionable
that God really exist?
- Have we seen God?
- No we did not seen a god
but we still believe in God.
Have we seen God?
Father= Died
PETER-ROMAN CATHOLIC
❖ Peter is the oldest of the three brothers who feature in
A Tale of a Tub. At first, he and his brothers get along
well, but once they have established themselves in
society, Peter's arrogance begins to shine through.
❖ He demands to be revered and obeyed by his brothers
and eventually ejects them from their shared home.
Several of Peter's characteristics, including his name
and his relative age, point to his status as a symbol of
the Roman Catholic Church.
MARTIN-ANGLICAN CHURCH
⦿Martin is the middle-born of the three brothers. He initially
respects and obliges his elder brother, Peter, despite the
latter's increasingly strange behaviour.
⦿When he is exiled and discovers that he has been disobeying
his father's will, he takes careful but thorough steps to
change his ways. His actions proceed from regard for what is
right, not from hatred or resentment toward Peter.
⦿Named after Martin Luther, Martin represents what Swift
viewed as the moderate Anglican tradition, avoiding the
excesses the author ascribes to either Catholicism or
Dissent.
JACK-PROTESTANT
❖ Jack is the youngest of the three brothers. After he is
exiled by Peter, he becomes consumed by hatred for his
oldest brother and does everything he can to distance
himself from him. Several of Jack's behaviours, such as
fervent preaching and dogged opposition to Peter in even
trivial things, mark him as a caricature of Dissent.
❖ He was Belligerent fanatic: It means having an aggressive
or fighting attitude. In aggression he ruin the coat. (“A Tale of
a Tub Symbols”)
❖ In the middle of a long catalogue of Jack's odd behaviours,
the story ends abruptly with "Desunt nonnulla" ("Some
things are missing").
❖ Martin, the middle brother, and Jack, the youngest, find lodging
together and proceed to look over their father's will again. They are
horrified to find how far they have strayed from their father's
command regarding their coats. Both try to remove the various
unlawful decorations from their coats—Martin patiently and
methodically, Jack by ripping and tearing.
❖ Where the embroidery is so "close" that undoing it might damage the
underlying material, Martin reluctantly leaves it in place. Jack, who is
more motivated by his hatred of Peter than by respect for his late
father, strips out every piece of fringe and embroidery, leaving the
original coat in rags. A series of disagreements leads to a wider
breach between the two brothers, and Jack goes off to seek his own
lodgings. (“A Tale of a Tub Symbols”)
CONCLUSION:
“A MAN DOMINATED BY A SINGLE
PASSION THE LUST OF POWER
FOR ITS OWN SAKE.”(LONG)

  • 7. FATHER’S WILL- BIBLE ❖ The father's will represents the Bible, which Swift regards as Christianity's fundamental instruction manual. Swift's claim in A Tale of a Tub is that the Bible should be consulted for basic, immutable guidance on all Church matter ❖ In their youth, the three brothers exemplify this kind of Christianity. The more closely the brothers adhere to the prescriptions of the will, the happier they seem to be and the more peaceful their consciences are. ❖ The sense of control, defined as the belief that one masters, controls, and shapes one’s own life, has been an important topic within sociology in general and social psychology in particular, tracing back to theory of alienated labor. ❖ The present study investigates how religion is related to the sense of control. The effects of religiosity on the inner lives of individuals have been a long-standing theme in sociological analysis and theorizing.

  • 11. PETER-ROMAN CATHOLIC ❖ Peter is the oldest of the three brothers who feature in A Tale of a Tub. At first, he and his brothers get along well, but once they have established themselves in society, Peter's arrogance begins to shine through. ❖ He demands to be revered and obeyed by his brothers and eventually ejects them from their shared home. Several of Peter's characteristics, including his name and his relative age, point to his status as a symbol of the Roman Catholic Church.
  • 12. MARTIN-ANGLICAN CHURCH ⦿Martin is the middle-born of the three brothers. He initially respects and obliges his elder brother, Peter, despite the latter's increasingly strange behaviour. ⦿When he is exiled and discovers that he has been disobeying his father's will, he takes careful but thorough steps to change his ways. His actions proceed from regard for what is right, not from hatred or resentment toward Peter. ⦿Named after Martin Luther, Martin represents what Swift viewed as the moderate Anglican tradition, avoiding the excesses the author ascribes to either Catholicism or Dissent.
  • 13. JACK-PROTESTANT ❖ Jack is the youngest of the three brothers. After he is exiled by Peter, he becomes consumed by hatred for his oldest brother and does everything he can to distance himself from him. Several of Jack's behaviours, such as fervent preaching and dogged opposition to Peter in even trivial things, mark him as a caricature of Dissent. ❖ He was Belligerent fanatic: It means having an aggressive or fighting attitude. In aggression he ruin the coat. (“A Tale of a Tub Symbols”) ❖ In the middle of a long catalogue of Jack's odd behaviours, the story ends abruptly with "Desunt nonnulla" ("Some things are missing").
  • 14. ❖ Martin, the middle brother, and Jack, the youngest, find lodging together and proceed to look over their father's will again. They are horrified to find how far they have strayed from their father's command regarding their coats. Both try to remove the various unlawful decorations from their coats—Martin patiently and methodically, Jack by ripping and tearing. ❖ Where the embroidery is so "close" that undoing it might damage the underlying material, Martin reluctantly leaves it in place. Jack, who is more motivated by his hatred of Peter than by respect for his late father, strips out every piece of fringe and embroidery, leaving the original coat in rags. A series of disagreements leads to a wider breach between the two brothers, and Jack goes off to seek his own lodgings. (“A Tale of a Tub Symbols”) CONCLUSION:
