Elizabeth City State University has an enormous impact on the local economy, estimated at $112 Million in 2010. ECSU’s annual
events attract thousands of people to campus and to northeastern North Carolina throughout the year. Each performance, fundraiser
and athletic event stimulates our local economy and offers a source of entertainment and cultural enrichment for the region. Events are
supported by students, faculty and staff, community members and a loyal family of alumni. ECSU has one of the highest Alumni
Participation Rates in the University of North Carolina System, and this is reflected in the large percentage of alumni that participate in

ECSU events raise funds for a variety of programs, most of which are affiliated with Viking Athletics or The ECSU Foundation. Since
1971, The ECSU Foundation has been providing scholarships to deserving students who, without financial assistance, would not have
access to a college education. To date, the Foundation has provided more than $5,500,000 dollars in scholarships, allowing students
to take advantage of opportunities only available at ECSU.

As the premiere fundraising event in northeastern North Carolina, The Founders Day Scholarship Gala is an evening of recognition,

The DOWN EAST VIKING
FOOTBALL CLASSIC
The ECSU Foundation Golf Classic is a significant fundrasing event for The ECSU Foundation, which provides scholarships to deserving
students. Taking place annually during the fall, the Golf Classic helps the 90% of ECSU students who are currently receiving financial
assistance while obtaining their degrees. Sponsoring the Golf Classic is an excellent way to support ECSU while enjoying an afternoon

ANNUAL GIVING
Annual giving is the genesis of all development. In comprehensive development programs, the annual fund is still the
cornerstone of fundraising efforts. Raising money for the annual fund is all about acquiring, retaining, and upgrading
donors. Through this process, our efforts focus on convincing last year’s donors to renew their support, while simultane -
ously developing a case that encourages non-donors to join the ranks of giving for the first time.
Annual gifts are for current usage. We promote the annual fund as a way to identify the impact annual gifts has on the
day-to-day operations of the university. These gifts generally are made with assets that are immediately expendable, and
to an account or fund that is for current-use purposes such as operating expenses, scholarships or outreach programs.
Whereas, gifts to endowments secure the future of our university, annual fund gifts help provide for the “excellence of
today”.
We often use the terms annual giving and annual fund, which are sometimes interchangeable. “Annual giving” refers to
a process and all facets of the program – direct mail, reunions, parents, gift societies and etc. And, “annual fund” refers
to the dollars that are raised toward the established goal; it may also reference an account which promotes unrestricted
annual gifts.
Annual gifts go to work immediately to support the best of ECSU - quality academics, student scholarships, outstanding
faculty, and applied learning initiatives (undergraduate research, study abroad, internships, service learning and leader-
ship opportunities).
ECSU's fiscal year runs July 1 - June 30. Gifts can be designated to the area of campus most important to you and gifts

ESTABLISHING FUNDS
ENDOWMENTS
An endowment creates financial stability, allowing Elizabeth City State University to be less dependent on unpredictable
sources of revenue, such as research sponsorship, and state and federal government aid. Endowments are created
through the establishment of a permanent fund that is invested and managed. A portion of the annual income generated
is used to carry out the donor’s designated purpose. Income earned in excess of the annual amount spent is added back
into the endowment so that it continues to grow and maintain its purchasing power for future generations.
Establishing an endowment can be done a variety of ways; outright gifts and planned gifts such as charitable trusts and
will bequests are popular ways to fund the initial endowment or add to it in later years. Donors often fund endowments as
a single gift or they spread the payments over several years in the form of a pledge. Endowed funds can become family
traditions, with succeeding generations adding gifts to the principal established by a founding donor.
Gifts for scholarship and fellowship endowments provide many opportunities to connect our donors’ passions with the
needs and objectives of this institution. In order to guarantee that the income from an endowment will be sufficient to
achieve the donor’s goals, minimum support levels have been established. The following are just a few of the categories

Today, scholarships are becoming increasingly more important in higher education. Without them, many talented and
capable students would be deprived of an opportunity to attend college. ECSU is focused on providing as many
need-based and merit scholarships as possible to attract the best and brightest students, and our donors make it possible.
Endowed gifts ensure that support for scholarships and fellowships will thrive in perpetuity. The principal of these gifts
cannot be spent without written donor consent; however the earnings must be spent according to the provisions outlined
in donor agreements.

More than 90% of the ECSU student population receive some form of financial assistance; therefore, the University has
identified scholarships as one of its most profound fundraising priorities. By supporting scholarships, you position the

Professorships allow ECSU to elevate our faculty by attracting and retaining the most distinguished scholars. These

Resource funds can be created to support individual programs such as elementary education, aviation, business, English,
or any other areas of the campus that are unique to this institution and bring distinction to our academic traditions. We
must continue to invest in ECSU, if we are to continue elevating our outstanding programs.

CAMPUS NAMING OPPORTUNITIES
NAMING OPPORTUNITIES
Campus
Naming opportunities for campus facilities and units satisfy a wide range of donor interests and contribute
greatly to the future of the Elizabeth City State University. This extraordinary, once-in-a lifetime gift or bequest
will have a permanent place on the landscape and in the history of ECSU. Benefactors are honored by the
University through the naming of the designated building, classroom, walkway, park, street, auditorium,
conference room or campus landmark. The funds received from naming opportunities can be used to create
scholarship funds, endowed scholarships and professorships, and for other use designated by the Chancellor.
 The Chancellor, in concert with the Chancellor’s Committee on Naming University Facilities, will
be responsible for developing a list of appropriate facilities to be named.
 The Chancellor shall have the authority to delegate to the Administrative Council the responsibility for
actively seeking and receiving nominations to be forwarded to the Ad Hoc Naming Review Committee
appointed by the Board of Trustees.
 All nominations must be submitted on the official nomination form and channeled through the
Chancellor’s Committee on Naming University Facilities.
 Following a discussion of the preferred list of nominees with the Chancellor, the Ad Hoc Naming Review
Committee will then make its recommendations to the Board of Trustees.
 The Board of Trustees will approve of the naming of such facilities and units and will defer to the
Chancellor for the timing of the dedication.
 An Ad Hoc Naming of Buildings Review Committee will be named each year and shall have the
responsibility to review, study and recommend to the full Board of Trustees all naming nominations for
Facilities and Units.
 New facilities will be named as soon as possible, not to exceed more than a three-year period.
 Naming costs based on the Board of Trustees’ policy is 10% of the building cost.
 Naming cost down payment is 50% of the total naming cost, with the balance to be paid in (5) five
years, along with a signed pledge agreement.

PLANNED GIVING
The Legacy Society was created to recognize and thank the individuals who have invested in Elizabeth City State
University’s future through a planned gift. Legacy Society members are vital partners whose generosity sustains a legacy
of giving that directly impacts ECSU’s ability to provide our students, faculty and staff with the opportunities and resources
necessary to make positive impacts in our region, across North Carolina and around the world.
Legacy Society membership is offered to individuals who make a deferred gift commitment in support of ECSU. There is
no minimum gift amount; however, written documentation of the gift is needed before membership is offered.

GIFTS BY WILL
Through various types of bequests for ECSU, you may secure a charitable estate tax deduction for the value of the gift and
know that your generosity will support the university for years to come.
GIFTS BY INSURANCE POLICY
A whole life insurance policy is a very popular planned giving vehicle. By paying the premiums and naming ECSU as the
beneficiary, your gift can start an endowment to fund scholarships, professorships, or a myriad of other options that will
support ECSU in perpetuity when the policy matures.
GIFTS OF RETIREMENT-PLAN BENEFITS
Consider using retirement-plan benefits to make a significant gift to ECSU. Due to estate and income-tax treatment of
these benefits, the cost of your gift to your estate and heirs is often relatively small. These are exempt from income tax
and may allow you to leave more for another beneficiary.
GIFTS THAT PAY INCOME
Do you want to support ECSU, but worry about having enough income for yourself and loved ones? Life-income gifts such
as gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts can provide donors with an income stream and significant tax savings
while still supporting ECSU with vital, long-term resources.
THE CHARITABLE LEAD TRUST
With careful planning, you may be able to accomplish more than one objective through charitable planned giving. For
example, if you have appreciating assets, children who may start a business in the future, and a desire to assist ECSU, a
charitable lead trust may be a good choice for you.
GIFTS BY ESTATE NOTE
An Estate Note is an irrevocable pledge or debt against a donor’s estate. ECSU recommends this option for persons 65
years of age or older.
