The main result of the ELMI project will be the transfer of an Italian e-learning course specifically
targeting family carers of older persons aiming at the acquisition of skills and competences useful to
provide better care and to integrate on the labour market. Because of the fact that the partners
involved in the project come from different EU countries (RO, PL, CZ) with different health social
systems in which elderly family carers can have different needs, the first phase of the project has
been a field and desk research. With the results of this study the partners will have a clearer idea on
the real needs of carers in terms of training. The study therefore will serve as basis for the national
adjustments in the transfer of the e-learning tool. Here are some of the main results of this
interesting study that has been presented during the 2nd
partnership meeting in Bucharest/RO (7th
-8th
October 2014):
Similarities in national context
The study traced many similarities in the work of carers situated in the different partner countries. In
fact, the carers profile is nearly the same (female, ca. 48 years) and almost all carers carry out the
whole range of the stated caring activities. The carers in all countries suffer from stress or even
burnout and carry out their work for a period from 6 months to 7 years. The most important diseases
of care recipients in all countries are dementia, physical disabilities, chronic disease or cardiovascular
problems. In none of the countries a paid leave from work is available. The interest in ICT and the
skills in this field are very low, especially in PL, whereas in CZ and in RO a certain interest exists.
Main differences between the national care systems
• In CZ there is a special training for carers
• In PL carers are too old for ICT skills and have no interest in it
• In RO and CZ additional caring activities have been reported
• In PL just a few support services are provided
• In PL carers are not interested in working in this sector
