the others who lived in Jerusalem? No, I tell

God Speaks

We need to leave the old behind
For at one time you were darkness,

Walk as children of light.

All the trappings of idol worship
So they gave to Jacob all the foreign gods which
they had and the rings which were in their ears,
and Jacob hid them under the oak which was near
Shechem.
Genesis 35:4 17
God’s protection
As they journeyed,
there was a great
terror upon the
cities which were
around them, and
they did not pursue
the sons of Jacob.

God of the House of God
So Jacob came to Luz (that is, Bethel),

a curse: 27 the blessing, if you obey the
commandments of the LORD your God, which I
command you today, 28 and the curse, if you do not
obey the commandments of the LORD your God, but
turn aside from the way that I am commanding you
today, to go after other gods that you have not

And by this we know that we
have come to know him, if we
keep his commandments.

Then God went up from him in the place where He had

Where was God?
So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath

that is the pillar of Rachel’s grave to this day.

When not if
When you pass through the waters, I will be with
you; And through the rivers, they will not overflow
you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be
scorched, Nor will the flame burn you.
Isaiah 43:2 37
What!
Genesis 35:22 (NASB95)
22 It came about while Israel was dwelling
in that land, that Reuben went and lay with
Bilhah his father’s concubine, and Israel
heard of it.
38
Bad act has consequences
Genesis 49:4 (NASB95)
4 “Uncontrolled as water, you shall not have
preeminence, Because you went up to your father’s
bed; Then you defiled it—he went up to my couch.
1 Chronicles 5:1 (NASB95)
1 Now the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel (for he
was the firstborn, but because he defiled his father’s
bed, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph the
son of Israel; so that he is not enrolled in the genealogy
according to the birthright.
39
Not a righteous man
The son will not bear the punishment for the
father’s iniquity, nor will the father bear the
punishment for the son’s iniquity; the righteousness
of the righteous will be upon himself, and the
wickedness of the wicked will be upon himself.
Ezekiel 18:20 40
The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob
By faith he went to live in the land of
promise, as in a foreign land, living in
tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with
him of the same promise.
Hebrews 11:9 41
Sad
Genesis 35:27–28 (NASB95)
27 Jacob came to his father Isaac at Mamre of Kiriath-
arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had
sojourned. 28 Now the days of Isaac were one
hundred and eighty years. Genesis 35:29 (NASB95)
29 Isaac breathed his last and died and was gathered
to his people, an old man of ripe age; and his sons
Esau and Jacob buried him.
42
Our Take-Away
1. God is with you when you are with Him
2. No matter how rough the trip, God is with you
3. Your standing with God doesn’t depend on
others
4. No matter how long it takes, do the right thing
