Reacción química exotérmica, de oxidación – reducción entre dos o más sustancias, combustible y comburente, que se realiza a gran velocidad. Comburente: es la sustancia oxidante de la combustión. En el motor de combustión interna es el oxígeno del aire que se encuentra en una proporción del 21% frente al 79% de nitrógeno. Combustible: es la sustancia reductora de la combustión. Los empleados en los motores de combustión interna son hidrocarburos derivados del petróleo Los hidrocarburos están formados por carbono, hidrógeno, oxígeno, nitrógeno y azufre. La reacción de combustión de una molécula de combustible requiere de varias moléculas de oxígeno, en función del número de carbonos e hidrógenos de que esté compuesta. Tomemos como ejemplo la molécula de octeno: C8H16 + 12O2 → 8CO2 + 8H2O Cada dos hidrógenos que haya en el combustible, requieren un átomo de oxígeno, para formar una molécula de agua; y cada carbono requiere dos átomos de oxígeno, para formar una molécula de dióxido de carbono. Esta es la configuración de una combustión completa o estequiométrica, en la que todo el O2 se utiliza para oxidar todo el combustible. λ define la relación entre la masa de aire y la masa de combustible de una mezcla λR representa la relación entre la λ de la mezcla y la λ estequiométrica. λR > 1 indica que la mezcla es pobre, con exceso de aire λR < 1 indica que la mezcla es rica FASES DE LA COMBUSTIÓN La reacción no siempre se cumple en su totalidad, y tampoco es instantánea, sino que consta de varias reacciones intermedias que ayudan a completar el proceso. Aunque las dos últimas reacciones se produzcan en paralelo, la de oxidación del H2 es más rápida que la del CO por lo que con mezclas ricas aumenta la emisión de CO ya que no queda oxígeno con el que reaccionar. INICIO DE LA COMBUSTIÓN Las reacciones normalmente se van a provocar por el choque de dos moléculas. La descomposición de la molécula de hidrocarburo es algo gradual, y el proceso está controlado por la presencia de unas moléculas y átomos que tienen una actividad mucho más alta que las moléculas de oxígeno, y que a la postre van a ser los que realmente ataquen al hidrocarburo. Éstos son los radicales libres, que son iones de oxígeno (O), iones de hidrógeno (H) y radicales hidroxilo (OH).
