- 5. Introduction
You may be wondering who I am and how I know a lot about memory. I am neither a
medical doctor, nor a clinical psychologist/psychiatrist. However, with my degree in Public
Health, I have dedicated my career to researching and writing about improving life-long
health disorders and diseases. Some particular subjects that caught my interest are the
study of memory and memory improvement.
In my efforts to improve people’s memory without the aid of pharmaceutical products, I
have not only helped people retrieve supposedly lost information, but also improve their
recollection abilities, thus aiding a more productive life and affirmed decision-making
skills.

- 6. Memory: Definition, History,
Formation and Measures
What exactly is a memory? The term is understandable by itself, but I wanted to begin my discussion
on memory improvement from the foundation of it all—the definition of memory. Memory is “the
store of things learned and retained from an organism's activity or experience as evidenced by
modification of the structure or behavior or by recall and recognition,” as is defined in the Merriam-
Webster dictionary. Memory is the stock we have in our brains, where information are stored and
supposedly categorized.
Brief History of Memory Systems
The history of the memory systems dates back to ancient times. Back then, there were note-taking
devices and everything was noted by memory. It was the memory techniques and systems that helped
the early Romans and Greek speakers and orators to deliver their speeches accurately without the
help of notes.

- 7. Memory and Your Daily Life
In a rapidly changing society like ours, it is necessary to adapt to the dynamism of the
society. The untrained memory of a person may find it exhausting to remember all the
significant information that has happened in a single day. There’s too much to remember;
important appointment’s, special dates, daily tasks, shopping lists, and a list of people to
call every day. The tasks seem endless, thus the mind has to find a way to adapt to this
rapid shift of attention. Some of us are able to multitask, while others suffer the
inconvenience of attention deficiency and lack of focus, leading to a less functional and
productive being.

- 8. The Younger Brain
Recent studies have been emerging on the subject of the younger and older brains, and
they reveal that older brains process information more slowly than nineteen-year-old
brains, and older brains are less nimble when it comes to multitasking. However, the belief
that the main reason why older brains don't function as well as the younger ones is
because neurons die off and are not replaced with new ones is falsified. According to
findings, even seventy-year-old brains can still produce new neurons and do not lose
neurons in large sections of the brain.

- 9. Learning and Remembering (FOCUS)
Because there are several distractions and diversions we face each day, it is necessary to
categorize the information that we store in our memory, so as to give ourselves better
chances of recollection and retrieval.
Mnemonics and memory improvement are two terms that always come together.
Mnemonics is the study of developing systems to assist and improve memory. But before I
go into detail on how to understand and use mnemonics to your advantage, first I’ll tell
you how human beings learn and remember.
