The Atlantic Rain Forest has been recognized by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve within the program Man / Biosphere.
The Atlantic Forest is one of the largest habitat of a variety of animals, precisely because it has a fairly representative territorial extension and it harbors around 2,200 species of birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians – 5% of the vertebrates on Earth. This includes nearly 200 bird species found nowhere else, and 60% of all of Brazil’s threatened animal species call this forest home. About 567 species of animals are endemic to the Atlantic Forest
2. The Atlantic Rain Forest has been recognized by UNESCO as
a biosphere reserve within the program Man / Biosphere.
The Atlantic Forest is one of the largest habitat of a variety of
animals, precisely because it has a fairly representative
territorial extension Because of weather conditions caused by
the crowding of trees, much of the fauna and flora species come
from that environment.., The Atlantic Forest harbors around
2,200 species of birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians – 5%
of the vertebrates on Earth. This includes nearly 200 bird
species found nowhere else, and 60% of all of Brazil’s threatened
animal species call this forest home. About 567 species of
animals are endemic to the Atlantic Forest
Even being considered as the largest rainforest in the world
along the Amazon, the Atlantic Forest has the highest number of
endangered species of flora and fauna. The diversity has been
reduced every year because of the intervention of man causing
the habitats of animal life to deteriorate with the expansion of
ranchers and agricultural activities, poorly planned
urbanization, among other actions.
4. Araçari-banana
(Saffron toucanet)
Mountainous
regions in the
Atlantic Forest.
Although preying
on chicks and
eggs of birds, the
species is a large
seed booster Thus
collaborates with
the planting of
fruit trees
producing food
that later will
form the diet of
these birds that
had their nests
robbed
32. Ararinha-Azul
(Cyanopsitta spixii):
Was considered extinct in 2002,
by IBAMA (Brazilian Institute of
Environment and Renewable
Natural Resources). There are
only 8 Ararinha-Blues in Brazil,
the others are in zoos and with
individuals around the world,
with a total of 78 birds with
known whereabouts. It is the
rarest bird that exists today.
35. Brazil as a whole is the world’s leader in primate diversity, with 77 species and subspecies identified to date. Of these, 26 are found in
the Atlantic forest, of which 21 are found nowhere else in the world.
52. The Atlantic Forest of Brazil
is also home to around
20,000 species of plants,
representing 8% of the
Earth’s plants. In fact, in
the 1990s researchers from
the New York Botanical
Garden counted 458 tree
species in 2.5 acres – more
than double the number of
tree species in the entire
U.S. eastern seaboard. New
species of flora and fauna
continue to be discovered.
60. The forest structure of the
Atlantic Forest contains
multiple canopies that
support an extremely rich
vegetation mix. This includes
an astonishing diversity of
ferns, mosses and epiphytes
(“air plants” or plants that
attach to other plants),
including lianas, orchids
and bromeliads.
