According to UN Women 1 in 3 women on an average experience some form of sexual assault at least once in their lifetime.
Most of this occurs to girls before they reach the age of 16.
Yet 80% of women and girls, choose not to talk about it. This under reporting and under communication has made the issue “invisible” and there is no urgency to do anything about it or data to inform solutions.
Sexual violence is an entire spectrum of abuse. Yet we tend to ignore the verbal and nonverbal abuse, deeming them to be too “trivial”, when in fact it can be equally debilitating to many, limiting their choices, movements and affecting mental health.
We are currently updating our app with The Data Duck. We are reworking the “reporting journeys” for different survivors to make it less “lonely”, more empathetic and interactive.
From our learnings we have identified there are 2 different people accessing our app – Information seekers and reporters of sexual violence
So as a response to the horrific gang rape of a young woman on a bus in Delhi, we launched Safecity a crowd map for sexual violence. People can anonymously share their stories regarding the incident, location and data and time. This is collated as location based trends, visualised on a map as hotspots. The aim is to identify patterns and trends that are location specific and identify factors that contribute towards the violence and make these locations the comfort zones of the perpetrators.

The aim is to make this information available in the public domain so that people can be more situationally aware and make better choices for their safety, they can mobilise their communities around an issue, get them to take a stand and find local neighbourhood solutions or demand accountability with service providers like the police, municipal authorities, etc.
The data can be used to inform or change policies, prevent violence, determine focused spending of budgets and advocate legal change.
This tool can be used to start a conversation on gender issues, collect data and the data itself can be used to find solutions.
You can send us the information in a template on excel and we can share data in the same manner with you.
