1. Six Things a Girl Scout Can Do to Save the Planet
1. Discover where all your electricity goes.
Hunt down your energy hogs. It’s an adventure and it might give you
an idea for a birthday gift for mom or dad.
2. Drive Less
Americans are only 4% of the world’s population, but we use
20% of the world’s energy. What will happen when all the
Chinese buy cars? There will not be enough air to go around.
3. Turn off the lights
Lights use a lot of electricity and are responsible for a lot of air
pollution. 300 coal plants around the world produce electricity
just for lighting. They produce CO2 that will last for a 100 years.
4. Install LEDs or fluorescent bulbs.
They use 70% less electricity. In some big homes they save enough money to
send a girl to school in a poor country. You can also convert all your nightlights
and flashlights to LEDs.
5. Chart your electricity bill
How is your family doing? Put a chart on your
refrigerator every month. Just doing the chart will
help your family use less. Maybe your school could
also do a chart.
6. Speak up
If you see a business or school running the air
conditioner too much; if you see a restaurant with lots
of food waste, say something. Speak up, it is your
planet.
